What makes a piece an OG?, by Baby Dave on May 23, 2012 18:17:07 GMT 1, I was just wondering what people thought about this question. What makes a piece an OG?
The reason I ask this is just for my own curiosity. It was suggested that the current Penny Pick n Mix pieces are OGs. My understanding of the term OG is 'original'. I asked myself, what makes a piece an original? In my books an original is an initial one off piece that has been hand finished or has an individual twist in the picture.
I personally think the Penny Pick n Mix notes are not OGs as they are an open edition for the duration of the exhibition. Granted they are all hand sprayed and will have tiny subtle differences, but they just dont strike the chord as being an original piece. If the Pick n Mix pieces are classed as OGs then surely all of Pennys hand sprayed pieces are OGs. Is there such a thing as an editioned OG? It was mentioned by another forum member that in this case they would be refered to as HPM (Hand Painted Multiples).
The Dran 100 Jours sketches, however, I class as being OGs. This is as each drawing has been done by Dran and there are only one of pictures around. If further prints of the pic were done then I would consider them to be from an edition.
I was just wondering what peoples thoughts are on this as it got me thinking. ;D

What makes a piece an OG?, by Baby Dave on May 23, 2012 18:19:01 GMT 1, Gibbin82 raised an interesting point in his post on the "Penny Release Online" thread....
" Although I tend to agree with this that sprayed stencils are not strictly OG's, it gets a little confusing when editioned sprayed stencilled canvas are described as OG's for example those from Banksy and OG may even be correctly applied to some of his screen prints like Rude Coppers with individual hand spraying.
It gets even more difficult to say what is an OG when you get editioned prints with lots of hand finishing such as some Drans where the screen printed part may only make up around 33% of the total area and the hand finished part is a unique and seperate image, could the I Have Chalks be both an 100 edition screen print and at the same time 100 OG's?.

What makes a piece an OG?, by barryh on May 23, 2012 18:47:23 GMT 1, Id agree that an original is a 1 off piece. HPM like shep uses or a hand painted edition are terms that seem to work also.
AS for a Rude Copper being an original, I think the only person that would say that is someone who would be looking to sell

What makes a piece an OG?, by Baby Dave on May 23, 2012 19:10:10 GMT 1, I personally wouldnt call a normal edition RC an original but what about the hand sprayed ones (with the red anarchy symbol, for example). What would these be classed as?

Oh yeah! I agree. I forgot about APs.
What are peoples views on the recent Dran releases susch as Art Thief and I Love You. They hold the base same image in the edition but are individually handfinished with stark differences between each piece..... Are these solely editioned pieces as they have been described as such from the outset or are they mini OGs in their own right?

Although I am not so sure about the Art Thief and I Love You prints as they were all a variation on the same themes, I would definitely say the I Have Chalks were OG's as there were 70-80 very different original drawings (a small number had duplicated images)

Just type the other 6 letters out dammit and call it an ORIGINAL. Use the whole word!

What makes a piece an OG?, by supercockle on May 23, 2012 20:11:10 GMT 1, Totally agree with Gibbin on the Dran's. With I have Chalks, the hand drawn elements made up the main subject of the piece, whereas with Art Thief, I love You, Le Poulet, the print was the main body of the work and so I would class them as variations on a version.
Chyren's book I would class as originals though.
Bear in mind, I know nowt.

What makes a piece an OG?, by rottenredrooster on May 23, 2012 20:18:31 GMT 1, It all comes down to the artist.
Art Thief, ILY, Chalks are all numbered and therefore part of an edition.
Had Dran numbered them all 1/1 then they would be originals. E.g. Art Theif is an edition of 50 therefore not original. 100 Jours, they are 100 works in the set but they weren't editioned...

What makes a piece an OG?, by Coach on May 23, 2012 20:23:27 GMT 1, So, Is all my sketch book ogs then?? Examples: Just curious
Undoubtedly. They are original sketches. An original is something that is not a print, and not a reproduction. Hand finishing on a print does not automatically make it an original, it's a hand embellished print. Unless the hand finishing is sufficiently copious and unique, in which case it could be an original I guess. I do consider my faile editioned stencil to be an original. I don't consider my hand finished prints to be. That's what I think, but just my opinion.

Sky, I couldn't agree with you more. Every time I see the term OG used out of context, I have to offset my frustration by pulling a single whisker from a fragile, trembling kitten.
OG is derived from 'original graphic'. A term used in the comic and illustration industries, particularly by collectors who just have to have the 'original graphic' to hoard in plastic sleeves under their beds.... This may resonate with some people here. The term is not short for original. Please, for the sake of kittehs everywhere, can everybody please stop using the term OG when referring to an original painting? Please.
An original is a unique painting. A multiple, or artist multiple, is something produced by hand with a slight variation between each in a series. An edition is a print, or something mass produced using a technique of reproduction wirh the intent to create an identical output. An OG is the original graphic that was used to make a reproduced piece.

What makes a piece an OG?, by Baby Dave on May 23, 2012 21:22:50 GMT 1, So in the case of Penny's work, the only OGs would be the actual stencils? Or even the initial picture from which the stencils are based on.
I never knew the history of the term OG as I am relatively new to the art scene (only been collecting for a couple of years). I didn't really understand the term OG until now. The whole concept of an "original" piece seems to be down to the artist and the individuals interpretation.
Interesting stuff.

With the above information about what an OG actually is, would the Drans be originals. 100jours for example.....I have chalks....
The 100jours I have is, to my knowledge, the only one of its kind, using that specific medium. I would class it as an original, not an OG. Is this right?

Your dran chalks pieces are prints with a bit of crayon on. 1/1 is a term used by non creative, edition happy artists who actually surprise themselves if they are able to make a single unique image without rinsing the art buying public.

The 100 jours are originals... each are unique and as far as I'm aware they are part of a set/collection not edition/numbered.
Chalks, whilst being unique in terms of hand finishing follows a theme and is numbered out of 100.
Whilst Jours is out a set of 100, they are not part of a numbered edition. Each one is different. An artist may indeed produce a set and call it 'X', with all artworks being part of that set but all remaining original. At the same time an artwork can be produced in an edition and numbered accordingly which doesn't make it an original.

What makes a piece an OG?, by gibbin82 on May 23, 2012 22:47:57 GMT 1, The whole concept of an "original" piece seems to be down to the artist and the individuals interpretation.
The quote above probably sums it up, I suspect there is no definitive definition to og and it all down to difference of opinion. The same is probably true of what og is actually an abbreviation of, although to me it stands for original. Just out of interest I googled og as original graphic and other than the reference to this actual thread I can't find anything else to support this meaning, so to me that would suggest that if it is an abbreviation used by comic collectors it is not used in the same context outside of that field.
I do still think the I have Chalks are OG's on an editioned print though
