Invader thief on eBay, by longshanks on Nov 23, 2012 10:23:44 GMT 1, I just received this internal eBay message:
''My name is xxxxx, I am from Spain. I am selling 4 Space Invader original pieces. They are from Bilbao Invasion (2007), from Paris Invasion (2 pieces from 1998) and from Lausanne Invasion (2000). I asked some ebay-friends for people who would be interested... I can send you pictures (step by step, being removed, before-after) and information/prices if you wish. I will be waiting for your reply. Have a nice day! Best regards.''
cheeky sod!!
it saddens me that this kind of stuff goes on.....
what should I do?

Whilst I agree that this is a rum do when it happens, there really is nothing you can do about it. The only thing you can do personally is not buy them.

Invader thief on eBay, by thedieseldog on Nov 23, 2012 13:11:57 GMT 1, Just inform the ebay mods that they're selling stolen goodd - they'll take down his account, particularly with the evidence you've got. Of course it doesn't stop someone he's contacted trying to get hold of him some how but does make it a hell more difficult

Invader thief on eBay, by Hubble Bubble on Nov 23, 2012 19:00:38 GMT 1, I'm interested to know the legal position on this. Can any men or women of the law inform me?
I own a wall. Someone puts up some ceramic tiles without my permission. Someone then takes down these ceramic tiles. Strikes me the tiles no longer belong to Invader when he puts them up, so we shouldn't feel sorry for him. Do they 'belong' to the wall owner?

Invader thief on eBay, by patmc on Nov 23, 2012 21:19:23 GMT 1, Tut tut tut. Mr invader puts his mosaics in place for peoples enjoyment and involvement. For People that don't know why they are there it's the novelty and the question why. For the people that know why there there it's about the game. For the greedy people out there it's about the money..... And for the people that are selfish enough to believe its ok to take these of the street I would say shame on you...

My thoughts entirely. They should stay on the street where they are intended to be.

Invader thief on eBay, by Snakes on Nov 23, 2012 21:41:01 GMT 1, What can you do? Report someone for stealing something that was illegally placed art work? Mr invader is unlikely to go to the local Police station to report the theft is he? As with all street art, Enjoy today as tomorrow it may be gone. That is the beauty of the art as it is ephemeral which makes it all the more special. Take the invader off the wall and it then is just a pile of coloured tiles.

Invader thief on eBay, by hnkpnk on Nov 23, 2012 21:44:25 GMT 1, The person removing things from a wall cannot know if it is "supposed" to be there. It could be a decoration on a wall that is commissioned by the house owner, be it a sculpture, an ornament or a Invader mosaic and it surely belongs to him/her. It may not be very legal to put it up, but it's definitely illegal to take it down from someone else's wall.

Disputable who the owner is. There also has to be a report of a theft before there is one.
Invader would have to claim it and state where he put it before he could accuse someone of stealing. Still disputable as could be said he left it there to be taken as did Adam Neate. So court would decide.
Lets say he placed it on my wall. I would charge him and the person who removed it with criminal damage - vandalism. Possibility that the person taking down had permission or repaired the wall. Again only the wall owner could make this charge.
Could the wall owner claim to be the owner yes but it is not guaranteed that he/she would win. Eg if I leave my car in your drive way do you become the owner. Again Invader would still have a claim if he wanted to pursue.
Key here really is that Invader accepts that the pieces are taken down and some are sold its a consequence. Probably not overjoyed but its what happens.
He knows these are forsale if he wants to. Sure he knows how to use EBay etc. he puts them up so they do not look good when they come down and they don't so it's lost really when they come down.

Invader thief on eBay, by patmc on Nov 23, 2012 22:13:46 GMT 1, I don't argue the legality of the pieces left by invader nor do I think invader would lose much sleep over the disappearance of his work. It is quite clear that they are placed on property's without the consent of the owners. It is the blatant removal of the artwork for profit that gets my goat.

Invader thief on eBay, by jojo21 on Nov 23, 2012 22:24:47 GMT 1, i can remember some doors signed samo being sold at major auction houses.
there were no COA i beleive.
invader is not basquiat, we all agree, but definitely those have a value, and maybe much more in the future. invader will probably not put mozaic for the next 20 years, so at one point there will be just a very few remaining.
it will be rare then, and they will be sold, and that's life...
cheers!

Invader thief on eBay, by freakinstyle on Nov 24, 2012 16:12:39 GMT 1, Looks like a typical example of whats legal and whats moral. It is legal I would say, but does that make it right? What is right/moral/ethical is for a community to decide. Well, there are some differences here.
One thing is obvious, the guy is clearly just in it for the money, otherwise he wouldn't take them down to sell them. Which means he knows his street art and looking at what he 'said' he also knows they have been there a while. Which means he should know people left it there hanging for a long time and I can imagine people are annoyed if an individual decides one day to take it away for money.
not so serious mode: [can imagine with the current economic climate, the guy is looking everywhere to get money for food now that 20% is unemployed in Spain]
