It's All A Bit Dull....., by spencerlee on Dec 1, 2012 14:02:26 GMT 1, I wasn't sure whether I had changed, or this forum, but I was on here every day, if not posting, but reading for sure. Now twice a week. Meh.

I think there may be an element of truth to that, what used to be niche seems to have grown into a monster. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing that street/urban Artists are finally getting recognition for their work, it's just a shame that so many people seem to have jumped on the bandwagon not to mention 'graffiti style' being used by every advertising exec, clothing company etc to bolster their brands.
Could be a case of familiarity breeding contempt for some?
In some respects I don't think it's a bad thing, sorts the wheat from the chaff so to speak

It's All A Bit Dull....., by Sundowner on Dec 1, 2012 15:09:06 GMT 1, The biggest issue now is there don't seem to be too many artists in the scene breaking new ground. The artists that helped create this scene have evolved and now operate in the very sphere they rallied against in the first place, selling work for ยฃ000s to those that can afford it (Banksy, Parla, Faile to name three). The imitators and also rans have either fallen by the wayside or continue peddling the same old ideas out constantly.
It's a sad fact that the opportunity to make a quick buck in this scene has attracted the wrong type of people and many of the old forumites have hung-up their boots and moved on because they are tired of the constant bickering about ยฃ. This is an art forum, where we should be discussing the merits of art not an investment forum.
On a positive note, whilst those just in it to make a quick buck are still around, I think things have improved since 2007 when things had reached fever pitch (anyone remember the Micallef L.A. set queuing debacle at Laz)? Also, there are artists that have come into the scene that are creating fantastic and original work....DALeast, My Dog Sighs, Conor Harrington, Mr. Jago - all highly talented.
However, IMHO generally the freshest talent isn't coming out of this scene anymore. It's clear from the evolution of members collections (mine included) to incorporate more contemporary and modern art that not only are people's tastes broadening, but they are looking in other places to find what they are looking for.

It's All A Bit Dull....., by Coach on Dec 1, 2012 15:39:16 GMT 1, I hate it when a select few artists use the forum as their personal shop front.
The artists that are members here showing their work is one of the best things about this forum imo

true that.
but i do share the sentiment that the board is getting a tad dull. the sharp edgy freshness of the early years has gone repetitive and money centric - and so have some of the more engaging, insightful contributors...
it's money from the art that made this forum big and it'll be the money that'll drag it down
what this forum needs is more than just a new design, or more new members, it needs shit hot art.
and i do see hope - in phlegm, in streetartnews, and all the individual artists and small galleries pitching their wares..
STAY ALIVE! THERE WILL BE A REVOLUTION!

It's All A Bit Dull....., by sakyamuni on Dec 1, 2012 17:34:15 GMT 1, I still enjoy checking this forum on a daily basis, and most of the time i find something interesting. My interest changed, i am not buying prints anymore so a lot of the discussions on f5 and flipping are not my thing, but i just don't read them. I don't go to openings as there is no openings where i live, so i always enjoy watching members' pictures and read their views and comments. This is my window to a world i can only enjoy online. I don't really care about the repeated trends, i just buy what i like, as long as i can afford it and my girlfriend agrees. And there is still way too many great art produced everyday and not enough cash and wall space to take it all ;D

Only just clocked your location sakyamuni....DRC...wow...we must get someone to head out to North Kivu to do a show for you and your province!
It would be great if you could share a little about your background?

My point is not about artists showing their work on here, I love that myself. if they didn't do that I wouldn't have seen the fantastic art by the likes of ABC. It is about a certain few who use the forum for the blatant hard sell of mediocre pieces they did that day.

My apologies. I missed your point. I thought you were referencing artists on here in general. That said, I can't think which artists you might be thinking of. That, btw is not a suggestion that you list them. That would most likely be devisive.

Whilst my contributions to it have been limited as I don't live in London, hats off to formula and mickeydread. Quality contributions.

It's All A Bit Dull....., by curiousgeorge on Dec 1, 2012 23:12:51 GMT 1, Given that way back in the early days of this forum you could turn a profit and pretty much 95% of releases.A huge sum total of trading went on here years,MUCH more than now by a very long way, so to say it's become money based is not true at all.
This is not a dig at those saying it's become all about the money it's just a fact the gravy train has been and gone a long time ago.Dull is not a word I use, slower would be better.Far too much stuff was churned out years ago and I'm as guilty as the next person in getting caught up with hype.
So while it's very slow here it does give genuine quality a chance to really shine, and not so quality art to appear as just that(least to my eye)
It's still the people that make the forum and still some cracking members here.Any older members which different names who care to say hello via pm do so:)
Edit:All the above said I'm still very aware once you start collecting Art for the Art, then you never stop.Already my tastes have ventured into different directions and now have interests in areas I would never have dreamt of a decade or so ago
P.S Not that admin would act on it but it does him no favours at all running the forum while invisible and ignoring some genuine concerns of members. At the moment it appears the community has been totally ignored yet one (possibly) paying gallery has been listened to..

It's All A Bit Dull....., by Deleted on Dec 2, 2012 8:39:52 GMT 1, Some interesting comments so far.
As many have said, a revamp of this site would go a long way to improving things. I'm clueless about the work involved in bringing this site up-to-date but think that if Silky doesn't have the time or desire to change it then maybe someone should be given the opportunity.
There has been a gradual decline in the discussion of art and artists, and that's partly due to the departure of many knowledgeable members. A forum is only as good as its members and maybe the level the forum is at now says it all.
However, I will still say that without the artists work there is no worth. And sadly, there are far too many people classified as artists whose aim is the accumulation of money. MBW is a prime example. His output is relentless, over-priced and of no artistic value whatsoever. His work is designed to separate a person from his/her money - nothing more. And sadly too many people have fallen for it. If Banksy is the Sex Pistols, MBW is The Exploited. Embarrassingly bad. And if his work is used as a template by the mainstream of what this art is all about, I have to walk away. And that goes for a lot more of art elevated way above its value.
It's a bit like music. There are those genuine bands/musicians with soul, and then there are those created by Stock/Aitken/Waterman, Simon Cowell etc - totally soulless and devoid of any passion. More often than not, the work is just f***in' poor! Just because an artist can release a print and have the internet to promote it, it doesn't mean it should be done.
Too many artists have fallen for the template laid down by Banksy, Neate, Faile etc, as opposed to taking the genre further.
Like many on here, my tastes and purchases have changed over the years and I've met some great people due to this forum. But this forum hasn't moved with the times. It has been noticeable to me that in recent months my interest in looking at new threads isn't what it was - too many posts are just sales threads of over-hyped work, or vote based threads trying to inject excitement.
My passion for this genre hasn't waned, more my disillusionment at the work on offer.

actually some artist do come here from time to time, but for a short period of time as security situation is quite volatile, to say the least. The last who came was jonathan darby, and he did a brilliant work with local youth, and he is now exhibiting with white walls, some truly stunning work, wish i could go but the timing is not right... You can check it here:
www.whitewallssf.com/shows/congo
British photographer josh cole also came and took nice pictures of Goma, the city where i live. you can find them on his website.
www.joshcole.co.uk
Organizing a show would be quite a challenge, and impossible these days as fightings are intense recently. Maybe one day, i hope for the kivu, after 20 years of war it is about time things change. We'll see...

It's All A Bit Dull....., by Cornish Crayon on Dec 2, 2012 12:16:45 GMT 1, I agree with Sean to the point that although I do pieces of art myself, and family and friends think they are good or great and I think they ain't, I end up giving them away (leave em on street) or storing them as I can't bring myself to show or attempt to join the art market thru fear of being labelled, or knocked back
It's easy to put your work out and be judged, but who wants to be judged or labelled within a certain category and not excepted for your work when I enjoy doing what I do and get pleasure from my time alone building on something or a thought i can transfer to a visual......albeit I knock every piece I finish ....... If its finished !!!!?? Lol
So that's me not showing my work, I can't imagine what some of the artists on here must go thru trying to be excepted to society..........
Some of the one liner comments I hear on here concerning a piece that somebody has clearly worked on are totally un-nessecary and hurtful, if you don't like a piece don't comment, do you comment when the hype is up and keeping quiet is the only way you can flip something ........
Forum needs a spring clean and a kick up the bum, before fb takes over and kills it,
I used to run a local Vw forum it was great till fb took over, that's what is happening here ........
I hate fb
Carry on

constructive criticism has to be a part of a forum, you can't solely have positive back slapping or silence, that's not how progression or development happens nor intelligent conversation. Agree that spiteful comments aren't helpful to anyone though.

Yes I agree with you there, but when an artist shows a piece to the public and the first three posts say "shit" "garbage" or get your own style.........
How can positive comments follow that ignoring the people comments who struggle to evaluate on there reason for a one word slur because its not there cup of tea or cos its not going to make them any money by flipping it in a few weeks time
Feedback is needed but not abuse,
No worries

It's All A Bit Dull....., by curiousgeorge on Dec 2, 2012 13:18:43 GMT 1, Like you I made some stuff that I didn't think were great, though friends and family did. Posted them on here and didn't really receive glowing feedback, point being it's brave to stick pics up but I was under no illusion that I had reinvented the wheel or suchlike.
I enjoyed taking the time to forgot about the trouble and stress in the real world and escaped the real word = satisfaction for me.People could have said my 4 year old could do better but that wouldn't change the fact that I enjoyed a bit of escapism for a few hours and no amount of harsh comments would change that!
Come on and post some pictures,I'm curious!!

If its finished !!!!?? Lol So that's me not showing my work, I can't imagine what some of the artists on here must go thru trying to be excepted to society.......... Some of the one liner comments I hear on here concerning a piece that somebody has clearly worked on are totally un-nessecary and hurtful, if you don't like a piece don't comment, do you comment when the hype is up and keeping quiet is the only way you can flip something ........ Forum needs a spring clean and a kick up the bum, before fb takes over and kills it, I used to run a local Vw forum it was great till fb took over, that's what is happening here ........ I hate fb Carry on
Like you I made some stuff that I didn't think were great, though friends and family did. It's All A Bit Dull....., by dotdot on Dec 2, 2012 14:08:51 GMT 1, interesting thread - you knew i'd hit a few words in @ some point.
generally ?
lack of direction is pushing this place back into the gutter.
does it matter ? probably not.
one thing.... the fact that folks still hang out - show something.. ! it has/had something... perhaps not much but hey... neither does tesco and a few of us still go there.
alas i probably like you buy not much on the strength of this place - in that it simply doesn't hold art up in high esteem.
more to do with spondoolicks... which is fine but hey it's not the be all.
missing out on a few drops .. well hey that's life - i could care less nowdays.. whether it's jk or dolk... i mean who cares @ the end of the day - there's more out there to discover.
if you really want something - fork is a by word.
take instagram for example... it's useful .. has its plussed and negs .. is not prone to blatent bull like this place on occasion and you can pick folks up and drop them ... just like that...
i do like the fact the prints still drop.. which never show up on here... which is cool.
plenty more fish in the sea .. street art is .... well still clinging on.. but this place is not helping... what with the recent censorship situation... just goes to show really that connivance.. doesn't actually take both parties forward.. if anything the revearse.
..anyone fancy starting up a new place ? without ads...

It's All A Bit Dull....., by johnnyh on Dec 2, 2012 15:36:09 GMT 1, Problem with the site is incorrect as apart from the design the content is all user generated. Eg If you do not create content there is nothing here.
So if people want it more interesting and to out weigh the sales threads we must create content pics from shows, street works, news paper art articles links to interesting vids etc.
Biggest problem with the forum is actually comments like yours Sean on the t**t Saville piece the other day. Makes people think why bother and. Low and behold the problem on here is that people aren't bothered.
"It's not interesting it's shit" to quote you.
Lots of artists leave due to getting slagged.
Butterfly who used to load up lots of pics of show she attended got negged every time she posted not been back lately.
Mikey Dread used to get negged every time he uploaded street art pics etc.
So people should contribute etc to get the Forum moving
Just my Opinion of course

It's All A Bit Dull....., by Deleted on Dec 2, 2012 17:32:14 GMT 1, johnnyh - my comment 'It's not interesting, it's s***!' was probably the catalyst for starting this thread.
10 years after first seeing Banksy's work, which blew me away, I was shown a picture of a piece of work which had been introduced to this forum on that bastion of morality, The Daily Mail's website. And that piece of work was posted by you under the title 'New Banksy...Not So Sure But Interesting.' If you really thought that was a Banksy then what has been posted on here over the years is just falling by the wayside.
If I wanted to be reminded of The Daily Mail, or any other hypocritical papers I will make my own way there. I am exposed to enough of this type of s*** on a daily basis without discovering it here. I have no desire to be reminded of the Daily Mail on something I choose to frequent.

It's All A Bit Dull....., by johnnyh on Dec 2, 2012 18:01:45 GMT 1, I posted it not saying it was a Banksy but it featured as a claim to be done by Banksy. Article title New Banksy. My comment - not so sure but interesting.
It does not matter the source of the piece as much as people slag the daily mail it unfortunately appeared there before here.
It was interesting in that it was outside the BBC relating to the Saville scandal and was the first piece I had seen relating to that.
I would however be obliged if such a bastion of morality as yourself could provide us members of the forum of a suitable list of sources that we are allowed to provide I formation from.
It may be says something about the forum and my point of members providing information in that the Daily Mail new of the t**t piece before we did here
It was also one of the few recent pieces that had anything to say
Ps. You obviously clicked the link knowing it was the Daily Mail so more fool you.......if your views above are correct. You could have just gone to the next thread. Eg if not your interest something's are best left unsaid as others may or may not be interested that's the point of the forum

What a shame. I have avoided getting a FB account until now. Maybe the time is coming.
