Commissions at Major auction houses`, by anodyne13 on Mar 9, 2013 4:15:12 GMT 1, I have not sold anything at one of the major houses, but did contact one about putting a smaller piece in an auction which they were interested in. I was amazed at the total fees.
15% buyers premium + 1.5% damage cover + 20% VAT on the fees = 19.8% on the sellers side
+ 25% buyers premium
For a total of almost 45% on the auction price, if I had a more expensive piece the total would be closer to 40%.
That is a boat load of fees..........

Commissions at Major auction houses`, by Deleted on Mar 9, 2013 11:21:57 GMT 1, Yes there is, you can negotiate a fair sellers rate with them, though remember it all depends on how keen they are to offer the work for sale anyhow ie. is it rare and / or original etc., watch out for any ridiculously high estimate on their part as you may have to fork out a percentage of estimate if it doesnt sell,, try for a no sale no fee but i doubt you will get that ha!, what they offering? 10%?, go for 7% or less. Good luck.
