The day the scene went soft., by james2g on Jun 30, 2013 7:21:21 GMT 1, Back when I started to get into street art there was a defined edge to it, a little activist, a little humorous, and somewhat defiant.
Now its just feels like the artists involved in it have either lost their voices or too scared to use them, Wooster Collective used to post daily images of cutting edge street art, now they only seem to post YouTubes of up and coming shows or artists that have access to cherry pickers, forums are way too busy arguing the worth of pieces rather than the meaning of pieces, and the โโFor Saleโโ thread on this forum has so many posts its embarrassing.
The new fad of tagging over stencilled images is getting tired and people are fighting to buy a Dog with a Crown on its nose and a Girls dancing on a Rainbow, artists rarely leave their studios and if they do its to pick up a decaf soy latte.
Are there any artists still with a voice out there or are we destined for rainbows and Labradors for life?

The day the scene went soft., by Deleted on Jun 30, 2013 7:36:15 GMT 1, This is a huge topic to discuss and one I fear that will be derailed quickly. Off the top of my head there's a few things to think about.
One is, that the scene went soft along time ago. Once money became a motivating factor for a message, the scene became less about statement and more about making people interested and unthreatened. Murals appeared on legal walls. Gallery's got their artists to place pieces on sanctioned walls prior to a show. The list goes on. Whilst making money is not wrong in itself, the work has suffered when you scale the analysis back to message (which has all but gone).
Secondly, graffiti which in essence is the purest form of street art, has stagnated, originators are few and far between. The work has not changed and the rules have nullified what should've been so much more.
Thirdly, the fans have proved time and again that a message, a need for something more is not necessary. We live in consumerist, selfish, fearful, corporate times, people are unwilling to give enough of their time to something other than theirs and this shows in the one eyed soulless pursuit of their next must have.
That's enough for now.

The day the scene went soft., by Feral Things on Jun 30, 2013 8:33:30 GMT 1, Although it would certainly be nice for discussions on here to be more focused on the artistic merit and meaning of the art and less about its financial value, I don't think there is any lack of interesting art out there.
Artists like Conor Harrington and Dale Marshall have come off the streets and into the studio but I think this has allowed them to produce art which genuinely has something to say about the geo-political state of the world and about mental health and social isolation. I won't think this would have been possible if they were solely painting illegally on the streets.
It doesn't generally get covered on this forum but there is still a generation of writers out there risking life and liberty to paint trains, rooftops and abandoned warehouses. The majority of the time when I go out hunting graffiti and street art I find a piece that is straight up beautiful or in an impressively high profile or inaccessible spot or has got something interesting to say.
Dolk and Eelus are only two artists in a massive ocean of talent and if they don't float your boat then I'm guessing there must be loads of other artists that do. I guess it's just a case of hunting those other artists out.

The day the scene went soft., by graffuturism on Jun 30, 2013 8:56:32 GMT 1, I think you guys are not seeing the whole picture or atleast looking in a small hole. There is so much art being painted in the world right not than any time before. Legal and illegal. You are right blogs that have fed it to you are on the decline but thats what its all about. It is about finding things on your own and yes you can still find things on the internet you might not have seen before. It happens to me all the time. I find artists half way around the world or get an email from someone wanting to be featured and i am blown away.
This doesnt mean that certain genres are dead or have slowed, surely as most of this thread stated it is hard to deny that certain genres have slowed. That being said look for those other genres, mediums and so forth that you didnt have time for. Do some digging.
There are artists everday painting in public still outside the market doing murals for free or legally, and illegally. Yet they of course will all eventually make it into a gallery and you can then determine where maybe some true intentions lie. Connor still paints murals on his own for himself yet he paints amazing pictures. Dale is pushing himself in the studio yet I know if opportunity came he would be on a wall in a second. But there are many artists with something to say and doing things worth looking at just dont expect them to fed to you any longer. Blogs that focused on street art like artists also go through life and maybe rise through the system to curate loftier exhibition space other than a gallery. I say if you dont find what you want on the internet create that space. do it yourself otherwise just widen your gaze.

The day the scene went soft., by Deleted on Jun 30, 2013 8:59:07 GMT 1, I see James's point, the day i myself get interested in something usually marks the decline of it. I never thought i would see so much 'street' art for sale in so called galleries, and i was also shocked at the same 'street' artists churning out so many editions of prints,of course its all about money in tills so thats that i suppose. I do like looking at the posts from Mikeydread and others showing proper street artists work though, but then i also enjoy reading about shows and new artists etc..
Cheer up James,i would say it may never happen but it probably already has and things only tend to get better after that dont they?.

The day the scene went soft., by Gentle Mental on Jun 30, 2013 9:09:07 GMT 1, it has not gone soft, it is what it is. has always been and will be long after we're gone.
it just feels that it has.
there will be another james as there will be another gentlemental grumbling about how crappy things are now and not like the good o days.
art is far bigger and more interesting than having pictures on walls.

The day the scene went soft., by Deleted on Jun 30, 2013 9:15:51 GMT 1, Bah humbug in my day things were better. These kids today don't know they're born.
When I were a young lad I had to work down 't mill for 20 hours a day just to put scraps on the table, none of this street art rubbish. Now I look at kids with their fancy iPods and new Dolk prints...what has the world come to?
Etc etc etc etc............

The day the scene went soft., by Deleted on Jun 30, 2013 9:26:17 GMT 1, Does a wall have to be illegal to have impact on people's lifes? This is an interesting point. No, it doesn't. The dynamic, the motivation, the reason behind a piece does change and although sometimes this leads to some spectacular pieces of art, I do feel it also leads to some level of 'conformity' a need to fit it into what is 'expected' on many different levels.
I have to say at this point, I would love to see more discussions like this here, very refreshing.

This is a huge gripe I have with current work particularly coming out of the UK. Many are living through the worst recessional period in living memory, personal freedom is being attacked (see Snowden), cuts are being made that effect those least able to cope, phone hacking is rife, MPs fiddle their expenses, Police take bribes etc etc And yet we're seeing very little from the creative community that mentions this...

There is more street art everywhere now not all legal and not all done by big names. It's also in every corner of the globe so if you only look at the commercial side that's all you will see.
As Harvey shows with the OS piece ok legal I assume but better than a plain wall likewise there are millions of Tags and Graff more than ever everywhere.
Re your political point again one only needs look at the Arab issues to see political graffiti and likewise in all of the 99/1% areas.
Think it is quite correct that big artists are careful on messaging when selling art rather than politics. But you only have to look to politics in certain artists regardless of whether street or not

Exactly, Snowden, Asange, Fathers for Justice, Saatchi, Afghanistan, US Bombing everyone with Drones, BNP, Monsanto, Phone Hacking, and so on and so on, not one artist picking up on any of this, is this not insperation enough?
Wow another 40ft high black and white Squirrel on the side of a building, or EINES new Scarf, or someone elses Tote bag.

But as far as your thoughts on street art being soft I don't agree, this style is popular these days so artist like the ones you singled out are doing what they do, creating art and selling it to make a living. Strike while the iron is hot, might not be able to down the road so why not? You don't like all the art, simple don't buy it and move on, saying the scene is soft or whatever is silly. Go buy some art from local artist at the nearest street fair so you can feel more special having works that are not desired by so many others since they are probably not as well know. Or better yet create your own works and change the world james, put out something more edgy with deep meaning, you show those Dolks out there what its all about..

The day the scene went soft., by Deleted on Jun 30, 2013 9:47:52 GMT 1, Having already said my bit on this thread i now feel unqualified to make further comment as i live in the countryside where as we all know everything is always lovely and people are always friendly so life is soft and mellow. I rarely (never) see anything like street art here but would like to,it would be a breath of fresh air to rock up at the village shop for my 2 slices of boiled ham and see some artist has been at work there with some artwork highlighting the cull of Badgers or the rise in building on greenbelt land,it doesnt happen, i feel unqualified. Will sit and read though as v interesting and should the thread turn onto the merits of the new Eelus print or whether number 4 of an edition is worth more than number 567 then i can come back in.

The day the scene went soft., by Deleted on Jun 30, 2013 9:54:00 GMT 1, I'll never get tired of the if you don't like it , don't buy it (and such comments). For me it sums up the weakest of arguments against dealing with opposing views. Is this what we teach kids at school? Don't develop an opinion, if you do, don't air unless you agree with others. The future of humanity is looking so rosy.

As the gentleman above pointed out, its NOT about buying and selling, like I mentioned I'm pretty sick that there are more posts on the 'for sale' thread than any other.
Its about what happened to those powerful thought provolking images we used to see 5-6 years ago, just interested that they've dried up even though theres plenty out there to comment on.

Ahh come on DD it's not that bad. There's plenty of political art out there just like there's plenty of great music out there, you just have to look for it as it won't always fall in your lap.

The day the scene went soft., by swamped on Jun 30, 2013 10:22:31 GMT 1, I guess its just not that easy to come up with ideas that move mountains all the time, they all can't be winners. Trial and error james, trial and error... part of being a growing artist I would think is trying new ideas, images, and styles. If they hit they hit, if they don't you try again. I'm with Wizzy on this one, I'm out and will watch from the sidelines...all the best james.

The day the scene went soft., by dazarino on Jun 30, 2013 10:23:13 GMT 1, My opinion is that the street art scene has just evolved, like everything that's gains popularity, the political Graf and bombing are still out there, it's just you won't find it on certain websites, artists like phlegm and roa have found a niche and exploiting it, lets face it, this art market is the biggest thing since pop art and will continue to grow, if your dont like where it's heading, jump off now. I personally am not a purist and just love to look at a great piece which a talented artist has decided to show the world for free. If he can get a few fans and sby doing so then good on him.
