Storm Thorgerson, by natstan on Aug 23, 2013 5:07:29 GMT 1, The man just passed away, but left a legacy of great surreal images behind. However, I'm amazed that his work is rarely, if ever, discussed or traded here. It can't be termed street art for sure and it is also not as 'urban' as one wants. But it's still cool contemporary art.
What's up, folks?

Storm Thorgerson, by natstan on Aug 23, 2013 15:48:49 GMT 1, Thanks for pointing me to that!
I'm just curious how much limelight some artists get for, imho, just average looking prints (in particular, a certain mr in particular who did an angel with tags and another with stars falling from the sky onto a street) while a true art legend who painstakingly stages his image with minimal use of artificial effects and gloss-overs gets ignored. I'm n

Storm Thorgerson, by natstan on Aug 23, 2013 15:53:25 GMT 1, I'm not sure if this has to do with him being in a different generation from most of us (even in that 'tribute' thread, the response is just lukewarn). Yet if you look at hid body of work, they often stand the age of time, which I would even go as far as saying beats many prints we see hands down.

Storm Thorgerson, by natstan on Aug 23, 2013 16:11:39 GMT 1, And for those who treat this as an investment forum, I can tell you his prints have increased in value dramatically within these past few months, although nobody knows if they are selling. But since the 6 months I first got to know him and started checking out the gallery (yeah I'm a late bloomer), I'm starting to see his prints selling out there!

Storm Thorgerson, by dotdot on Aug 23, 2013 16:45:02 GMT 1, oh and yeah his work is way better than most..
though.. some "stuff" you might see here.. needs a bit of thought before you ... buy. ..not wishing to bring up "old threads of nothingness."
oh and btw if you admire his work with hipgnosis - check out Eric White.

Storm Thorgerson, by natstan on Aug 23, 2013 17:03:35 GMT 1, I was reading up on him (ironically, a few months before he passed away) and find that he always have a great story to tell with his images. This man thinks deep, which I'm not seeing in a lot of urban artists these days. They can just come up with a pretty (ok, that is really subjective) screenprint and throw it out into the market, and 'art lovers' will snap them up instantly without a qualm. Is it a case of profits getting before the art? I can't tell, and I'm in no position to declare that.
This thread pops up because I was on the other thread about an angel with tags and how sore the folks that bought in were when they were refunded. And they started kicking up a big fuss. All over what I thought was a thoughtless piece of figurine. Look there, MW, this is truly not personal.
But I think artists have , dare I say, an obligation to challenge the status quo and move into uncharted territories. Take for eg another artist Eelus. His prints also sell mainly on aesthetics, but I can see him challenging himself by working on a different format - he's doing some fantastic layered cut works isn't he? - to build on his original working methods.
It's pretty ok if Storm's not for this forum, but I feel many folks are missing out on what would be considered great art.
