Who got you hooked?, by Feral Things on Sept 7, 2013 10:45:35 GMT 1, I was wondering which artists got forum members hooked on graffiti/street art/urban art in the first place?ย For me it was a combination of...
Dism's trackside pieces in Newcastle in the late 1990s. ย Unfortunately they've almost all been buffed and there aren't many images floating around the internet which is one of the reasons I've photographed so much graf ever since:

Alรซxone/Oedipe's surreal characters and abstract letterforms from when he was part ofย 9รฉme Concept:

And, I suspect like many other people on here, Banksy's stencil work around Bristol from the late 1990s:
I'd be interested to hear which artists got other people hooked!

Who got you hooked?, by Chrisp on Sept 7, 2013 11:33:58 GMT 1, Beat Street started me off at the tender age of 9. First arrest for stealing spray paint from garages followed one year later, wasn't a lot they could do about though because of our age we even made the local papers!
Anything from sparaycan and subway art helped, only painted until i was about 15 and not touched it since. British artists such as VOP(Visual Orgasmic Productions), Popz 100, Mode 2, Goldie, Zuki & anything a Selly Oak Park(Birmingham). I would travel on my own to Selly Oak Park about twice a year just to stare at the walls. This was after i had stopped painting and used my college travel pass to get there .
Friend that was into graffiti showed me Banksys website not sure of the year late 90's guessing 98? But i can remember seeing canvases ยฃ400 that i am sure of, at the time i was spending any free money which was not a lot on music equipment and never bought one even though i really wanted one. Think i was on about ยฃ120 a week then working at Kays Depot.
from about 91 i got into the rave scene and didnt have much time for anything else, cant remember a lot of that i wonder why?
First canvas i bought was by replete via Ebay about 4 years ago(lost that in a fire). but only seriously collecting for last 3 years.
I do have some where a pretty large photo collection of graffiti from 88 - 93 i had totally forgot about this and i am not sure where it is or even if i still have it, will try and dig it out and post some scans.
Brought back some good memories thanks for posting!!

Who got you hooked?, by Feral Things on Sept 8, 2013 13:00:42 GMT 1, Great post, Chrisp! If you ever do come across your photos from back in the day I'd really love to see some of them.
I'd forgotten about VOP but just had a happy 20 minutes going through their website for the first time in about 10 years. I loved just how diverse all their styles were but it all worked together so well. I always thought this piece was absolutely nuts - so much style and so many ideas in one wall.
