Artist Commissions, by Gunny on Nov 18, 2013 11:28:30 GMT 1, Can you guys give me your views on commissions. Is it normal to pay up for a commission or do you pay once done. Or do you pay half, then half when done. Thank you.

Artist Commissions, by Deleted on Nov 18, 2013 11:32:54 GMT 1, Depending who the artist is. Usually they ask for an upfront non refundable deposit. This shows to them you're serious (a lot of artists I've dealt with tell me they get so many commission requests that then don't happen). but again I think it differs greatly from artist to artist.

Artist Commissions, by raindogs on Nov 18, 2013 11:42:55 GMT 1, I had a great experience with a well established artist, and a true gentleman, who made the commission, and when ready asked me if I liked the artpiece he made, adding that if I didn't like I was free to reject, so that I paid only after my approval. It is actually the piece I prefer of my little collection. As Tartarus says, usually I think it is fair 50% up front and sometimes instalments along the way. I have a question: what usually happens when I don't like the commissioned piece at all?

tell them it's not what you wanted. Ask them to change it. A good artist will ask beforehand what you're looking for in terms of imagery tone depth etc... I usually ask for photos as the commission goes along so if there's something I'm not too keen on it's easily resolved. Never happened to me where I've really not liked a commission though! I guess keep saying no until you're happy?

Artist Commissions, by dotdot on Nov 18, 2013 11:59:58 GMT 1, fwiw - I've had a couple done. no problems or issue - of any significant detail.(ie nothing that wasn't fixable). paid in full post production. chuffed to bits generally and it tends to be that once you commision a work - chances of selling it .. since it was made for you - are close to ZERO... Keeping the artist happy and .. well I'm quite happy.

Artist Commissions, by Dungle on Nov 18, 2013 17:33:27 GMT 1, From my experiences it is 50% up front to show commitment and the 50% when its ready and you are happy with the result.

Artist Commissions, by Ottomatik on Nov 18, 2013 19:47:29 GMT 1, So far, I've had 3 commissions. I'm happy to say, they have all been with the same artist. For two of them, I paid a chunk up front, payments along the way. With final payment once they were finished. The 3rd was 50% up front, 50% at the end.
Either way, I think that most artist would work with you....and your budget. Within reason. Just remember, they are artists not accountants!
As for seeing the piece once finished and not liking it... Well, I'd have to say that is a case of poor communication on both parts! Seriously, depending on how much you're paying, that is a huge leap of blind faith to only see the finished product.
With my 3, they kept me informed with their direction. along with photos of the work along the way. Asking my thoughts of the progression.
We are already starting talks for the 4th!

Artist Commissions, by lifeonwalls on Nov 19, 2013 21:30:40 GMT 1, I've done 50% upfront and a 2nd at 100% when we met and exchanged the canvas. For the second one he sent over a rough sketch for my approval to make sure we were on the same page.
