Why sell on this forum and not Ebay?, by antman on Jan 29, 2014 23:20:38 GMT 1, I am rather new to this, so bear with me.. I don't get the point of putting art for sale on this forum? Is there any advantage for the buyer if the item is sold in here? Ebay gives you a money back guarantee, and the seller and buyer are obligated to honor the deal. That is not the case in here. I have seen on this forum that sellers often use the latest Ebay prices as a benchmark, why not sell on ebay then? Sure I get that Ebay charges, but I would rather buy through Ebay if the price is the same.
So why buy art in here?

Why sell on this forum and not Ebay?, by mmmike on Jan 29, 2014 23:27:39 GMT 1, You can deal with people you kinda know. I'd rather give a deal to someone who contributes here than on ebay, less formal.

Why sell on this forum and not Ebay?, by iamzero on Jan 29, 2014 23:33:16 GMT 1, Don't have an answer dude but I can say that I'll only buy if it's a bargain either on here or on ebay. Ebay is a good benchmark when members over egg their prices and an a piece finishes at auction considerably less.
And there are some great members on here to deal with.

Why sell on this forum and not Ebay?, by randomname on Jan 29, 2014 23:38:32 GMT 1, Between ebay and paypal fees, you're losing 10% on everything you sell. That said, ebay is easy and hassle free. When I sell something, I generally don't care if I get top dollar. I usually just want to get rid of it.

Why sell on this forum and not Ebay?, by maddoghoek100 on Jan 30, 2014 0:17:08 GMT 1, simple answer: www.fees.ebay.com/feeweb/feecalculator
Cutting out extra fees helps both buyers and sellers and paypal offers protection to the buyer and seller regardless of where the deal was struck.

Oh and Elevated Scott isn't on ebay

Exactly. And this forum is quite London centric so face to face deals are easy and most people are sound.

LOL, really? Tell that to the several members scammed. Or the wannabe scammers that pop up regularly here.
I much rather trust eBay than many newer members here.
Not to mention sellers here think they deserve a zero responsibility in sales such as the old gift or buyer pays fees... Try that shit on eBay. Or the nebulous sales offers..
Aside from a few trusted members I do NOT buy or sell art here.

Why sell on this forum and not Ebay?, by Poppy Sunshine on Jan 30, 2014 8:23:24 GMT 1, 23,244 items are listed on ebay under Banksy as i write this of which 24 are actual pieces I would be happy to call genuine. christ alone knows what the postman would turn up with if I bought any of the other 23,220 bits of tat.
After a quick look I'd say all or most of those 24 pieces are being sold by forum members and regardless of your view on their pricing it's a fair bet that you'd get something nice and in good condition.
If you've got time to wade through thousands of listings to get to a smattering of highly priced gallery pieces and a very small handful of collector owned prints then I wish you luck in your search for meaningful employment.
However, if you'd like to find exactly what you want in seconds then this is the place to be.
If you don't see what you want then place an ad and get direct replies in no time at all from people who share your passion and will have a fair price in mind. If you've spent any time at all on these boards you will be armed with a fair idea of who to trust and who knows what they are talking about. (And that is a lot of people on here)
Life's too short for ebay.
It's a useful tool and I use it regularly myself but this is the place for Banksy. It does what it says on the tin.

Why sell on this forum and not Ebay?, by Hubble Bubble on Jan 30, 2014 13:28:41 GMT 1, Because, for me, it's not always about squeezing the last dollar out of a piece of art's worth. It's good to build - albeit primarily internet based - relationships and friendships with other like-minded folk in the knowledge that you and they are happy to buy and sell pieces on a 'reasonable price' basis. So you might lose a few quid from 'top dollar' on work you sell but what goes around comes around and, as long as the process continues, you save that next time you buy from someone else with your values.
That's my take on it anyway and, obviously, I'm aware that there are many sellers on here who don't subscribe to that viewโฆ

Why sell on this forum and not Ebay?, by Deleted on Jan 30, 2014 13:40:25 GMT 1, Lol bigboss, no worries as I'm pretty sure Africa is off of my preferred shipping list
I was more specifically talking about the recent rash of first time posters selling stuff immediately.
The more this forum acts like freebay the more people talk about ONLY prices, flipping, hyping, etc and less about sharing the art we have or want

Why sell on this forum and not Ebay?, by kultur on Jan 30, 2014 21:03:18 GMT 1, I would say that almost everyone goes on eBay to purchase something at a bargain or a deal, or at least has that intention. Bid sniping at the last minute and whatnot.
I think quite a few people use this forum though to artificially drive up the prices - not that you can't do that on eBay, but it is easier on here.
I have never had a problem buying from members on here and have had some great transactions - even meeting people in person with thousands in cash. Just ask lots of questions and go with your gut. As I mentioned in a previous post though, I have been offered stolen pieces on here but with some digging I was able to avoid those purchases. Chances are if something is to good to be true it is.

Why sell on this forum and not Ebay?, by maddoghoek100 on Jan 30, 2014 22:29:50 GMT 1, It seems that you can obtain the same rare item in many ways: Gallery, Auction, Direct from Artist, Ebay, Direct from another collector. Other collectors have no overhead, are not in this to squeeze the last dime out of the piece, are as likely to have a reputation you can rely on thanks to the internet and you can get the same protections on your purchase through paypal. There are plenty of forgeries or inferior pieces passed on by galleries, auctions, and certainly ebay. So buying from an actual person seems like a great low cost route
BUT
it seems like the more interesting question is why buy from ebay or the board rather than direct from the artist. I get it Banksy, Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons wont return your emails to sell you something, they are jerks that way But there are a lot of awesome artists that will. Pick an up and comer you like, get something really special from them, maybe visit their studio. Usually a better story behind the piece when you do it that way than "i handed a dude money and he gave me a thing". Maybe in a few years someones jaw drops when they see you have a marquee piece from the new hotness and you knew him/her when...
My 2 cents, i do love the liquidity and democratization of the board. It makes it easier to get what i want at a price i am willing to pay. 100% gallery markups and 30% buyers premiums on hammer price + local sales tax are for the birds, and i only pay the 12% ebay markup when i have to.
Side note: the title of the thread is why sell on the board, the question asked in the message is more of the why buy on the board. One reason to sell on ebay is if you are uncomfortable with your asking price or are looking to move something that is unmovable. There is always a chance you will find a willing dupe who does not know the item can be obtained cheaper. I.E. open edition obey posters at 100% markup.
Ebay also has WAY more traffic than any message board so if it is a thin market you have a better chance of finding the right buyer.
But all told you should always be able to obtain any item listed on ebay for 10% less if you buy direct and less yet if you pay cash and meet in person. On the same day on the same item the price for ebay should NEVER be the same as the board. If the seller wont give you a "cash" discount move on to the next seller who will.

Re: artists some are accessible some are not.
For example this just happened this week. A well known NYC artist whose studio had a good reputation for being accessible and having items at many price levels... So I send an email months ago, it was never answered, I think fine they are busy. Fast forward months I get an email from them asking if I'm still interested in a small work. I say yes.
They put me to their new sales director (off site) who proceeds to start by responding to someone else to my email. They use 3 different email and proceed to give me the compete blow off.
I finally have enough and am like you contacted me, I don't appreciate the problem this had turned into.
She them sends me 3 print choices!!! LOL and if that wasn't bad enough they are double the posted price at a well known gallery. I obviously tell them to keep their prints.
I follow up with the studio director and how does she handle it. She contacts the gallery and has them raise the price!!! You could not make this stuff up ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)
So not always possible or advisable to go through the artists directly ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Why sell on this forum and not Ebay?, by maddoghoek100 on Jan 30, 2014 23:25:12 GMT 1, hahahah, not knowing who the artists is, i imagine they it would be interesting to see how they would respond and if they know how incompetent their team was. Seems like my experience is more binary:
response or no response. Seems like the rarity to get a response and it is incoherent
i concede it is hit or miss, but that is sort of what collecting is about, the hunt, the war stories to tell others over a beer.

Why sell on this forum and not Ebay?, by Brushstrokes 75 on Jan 31, 2014 14:06:02 GMT 1, Once upon a time, this forum was a sharing place among people sharing the same interests. This is a community. Of course, value has grown but it doesn't change the core purpose of this site.
How many times did I see people offering stuff at cost where they could have just flog them on ebay to maximize? Knowing when you sell a piece that it's going to a good home is way better than getting top dollar.
Of course, not everyone follow that rule but it doesn't mean that it changes anything in spirit.
I got good deals & I gave some. In the end, everyone's happy & you get to meet & connect with people sharing your interest in art (rather than just being a purely business transaction).
