How to purchase Joan Miro with out getting ripped off, by Phear Loathing on Feb 12, 2014 18:24:28 GMT 1, I have always enjoyed his work and entry into that market appears to be relatively inexpensive.
My main concern is how to tell what is a good buy and what is not. What is real and what is fake ect.
Not necessarily looking to buy immediately, just in the future at some point!

How to purchase Joan Miro with out getting ripped off, by Deleted on Feb 12, 2014 18:59:19 GMT 1, I have a couple of Miro's that I enjoy very much. If you are looking to buy Miro, one easy thing to do is contact Brushstrokes, he may have a few. The other obvious choice is Sotheby's or Christies. If you are not familiar with his prints you may want to stay clear of ebay, there are tons and tons of fakes, bookplates with fake sigs, etc. etc. Credible sales will always list the catalogue raisonne reference number. That is quite easy to google for size, edition, paper, etc.
IMO a genuine inexpensive Miro can be had in the area of 1-2K US. But Miro's quickly go from cheap (1-2k) to very expensive (20k+)
Miro has a catalogue raisonne that catalogues all of his prints, but that thing is like 5 volumes!! and very dear ($$$$$) to get a hold of. If you live near a major museum they may have a set.
Well good luck in your search. He really is one of the greats.
His signature is great, tends to stand out as compared to signatures on most other prints.

How to purchase Joan Miro with out getting ripped off, by Phear Loathing on Feb 12, 2014 19:14:49 GMT 1, Excellent gentleman thank you for your insight.
I'll keep my eyes peeled on the auction houses. I know "buy what you love," but there are quit a few artist fromt his period I enjoy. Is Miro decent in terms of investment in the very long run?

How to purchase Joan Miro with out getting ripped off, by Deleted on Feb 12, 2014 19:25:17 GMT 1, If you buy a cheap one that is not well known and sells regularly (if you check out the big houses past results you will see many of the same images again and again) I would say it's a pretty stable investment. But will it skyrocket, probably not. Miro probably has close to 1000 prints .
If you buy a well known image they tend to fluctuate. A few auctions bring big money then they all come out of the closet and the prices goes back down.
But again, you won't lose money if you buy smart, and you will slowly make money over time. No real flipping opportunities for the layman without access to estates, or a wealth of knowledge to spot the occasional bargain at a local auction or online.

How to purchase Joan Miro with out getting ripped off, by Phear Loathing on Feb 12, 2014 19:45:13 GMT 1, Thanks Streetfart.
Not looking to flip or get rich, but if I am faced with 1000 images I would prefer not to buy the one that loses money on the bunch : )

How to purchase Joan Miro with out getting ripped off, by Brushstrokes 75 on Feb 12, 2014 21:54:20 GMT 1, I do have a few (so to speak) Miro pieces. Catalogue raisonne is 6 volumes for lithographs & 3 volumes for etchings . They are fairly expensive because vol 1 through 4 contain original lithographs (with deluxe editions containing the signed lithographs). I have them all so if you need an info pm me.
As Rob said they go from about $1500 up to $70k with most being in the $2.5k/$8k range.
Aquatint & etchings are usually more expensive than lithographs.
Most expensive piece is called equinoxe :
www.christies.com/lotfinder/prints-multiples/joan-miro-equinoxe-5489010-details.aspx
Most expensive print was made for the 100 years of the printer Mourlot (who printed almost every single lithograph Miro ever produced) :
www.christies.com/lotFinder/lot_details.aspx?intObjectID=1777584
The Miro foundation do authenticate lithographs for about 250 euros. You can get good deals on ebay but as rob said, you need to have a good command of Miro to do that. Otherwise, going through a good auction house (phillips, bonhams, christie s, sothebys, artcurial) would get you the best market pricing. Galleries always sell for more than auction prices because a lot of them source their stuff there.
if you need any info, do not hesitate to contact me
