How to release a print..., by delano on May 30, 2014 18:15:13 GMT 1, Following a thoroughly pleasant evening last night picking up a print & having a couple of free beers & a chat with Borondo in his studio last night, my faith in this scene was restored.
However, as I travelled back to the Midlands on the train, I watched a lot of the good work & effort put into the event by SAN backfire, as the online release did not go smoothly at all. & this is a recurring problem with any popular print release. Even if SAN had announced a time, the print would have gone in seconds & there would still be a lot of anger & disappointment from those who did not get the print.
It got me thinking, that the same happens with sneaker releases, concert tickets etc etc etc. & everyone has an opinion as to how things should be done.
Do it all online - but then those with bots or faster internet connections have an unfair advantage, & if you used last night as an example, it would have meant I would not have met the artist
Do it in person only - but then those who live in the release city have an unfair advantage.
Hold a lottery - but those in charge can make sure that their friends, family & favoured collectors get preferential treatment
Put up prices & try to negate flippers...
So, there is obviously not a perfect way, when releasing a limited & coveted product.
But what are your opinions on the best way to release a print & is this way necessarily the fairest way?

How to release a print..., by alittle on May 30, 2014 18:21:36 GMT 1, This is what I prefer:
1. Show the image and details about size, paper, etc., prior to the release 2. Provide price prior to the release 3. Provide a time, or time range for the drop 4. Have the sale site hosted on a server that can handle the traffic
Beyond that, I don't care. I most prefer precise drop times as I can get on with my day, but if a time range is provided, that is acceptable as well, as I can at least decide in advance how much time I'd like to waste trying for a particular release.

How to release a print..., by South Bound on May 30, 2014 20:05:00 GMT 1, Do two releases in one day. Announce time, price, image. Let the the BOTs have the fill on the very limited first run. Then shortly there afterโฆ randomly (but not to long after), the website brings the release time forward (by small amount) and only announces on the website. Therefore throwing the BOTS off.
I have seen a few releases done this way and I have always benefited. Sure some will get screwed but not as many as those who fight the BOTS

How to release a print..., by delano on May 30, 2014 20:49:36 GMT 1, What if 1 or 2 prints were released every hour on an auction site & auction lasted 1 hour?
This would allow everyone a chance no matter what time zone they lived in, it would eliminate bots & could flush out flippers in the early hours...
Just a thought.

How to release a print..., by Momo on May 30, 2014 20:57:41 GMT 1, I lost my whole comment there!
What if there were 2 Captcha questions, The 1st on selection of product/print and had a 30sec timeout and a 2nd on confirmation of purchase, that would defeat the bots at least in my eyes.

How to release a print..., by Gard on May 30, 2014 22:36:22 GMT 1, What if 1 or 2 prints were released every hour on an auction site & auction lasted 1 hour? This would allow everyone a chance no matter what time zone they lived in, it would eliminate bots & could flush out flippers in the early hours... Just a thought. A version of this would be amazing. 10 auctions going on at the same time, you know which number you're bidding on. Each auction is 5 minutes, but when it's less then 10 seconds until the end each bid ads 10 seconds. You could do these auctions all day so no one have to wake up early. You can wait and try to bid on your favorite number or you can try to find the one few are bidding on and get a good deal.

Only issue here being if someone pops up with loads of wonga and slaps down large on each buys the lot, screws the 3 purchase a year guy/gal

How to release a print..., by astrobboy on May 30, 2014 23:58:00 GMT 1, I like the way that Audrey Kawasaki released one of her prints earlier this year. A "time limited edition". It was available for 24 hours and anyone who made an order in that time period got a print. The edition size was determined by the number of orders. They were all signed and numbered.
urbanartassociation.com/thread/114600/new-audrey-kawasaki-print
Flippers wouldn't be getting money anytime soon. People who honestly liked the art were pretty much guaranteed it if they had any spare time to get to a computer in that 24 hour period. The image and price were made listed prior to the release.

I have suggested that for the last years, but it seem that this idea doesn't get much love though. I don't know why. Maybe artists are afraid that - taken away the shopping frenzy and all the hype re: how limited the prints are - lots of work wouldn't sell. They could even solve the problem with handfinished prints (see above) by throwing them in randomly.

If theres a bun fight going on then you'll have sad gets on internet forums who are into pointless stuff like art prints talking about the artist, therefore promoting the artist's name and creating more demand for the print.

How to release a print..., by 2nuns on Jun 22, 2014 9:12:07 GMT 1, Really pleased I've picked up this thread, our gallery launches in July and has a lot of the functionality mentioned in this thread. Nice to know we are on the right track! We have tried to incorporate all the ways of buying we would like to see ourselves such as time release and auction.
