quick question on unsigned prints, by Momo on Jun 12, 2014 2:21:01 GMT 1, Prob a real simple and stupid reason covered previously but couldn't find it discussed before.
Why would an artist design, refine and produce work, ensure quality and standards and then not sign them?
I am aware of many artists with unsigned prints and was just wondering why, Banksy for example, why are some signed some unsigned?
(A further question less important though, I've seen some artists fingerprint their work as a sort of Coa/signature (thought this was clever but realise certain street artists can't do this for legal reasons and anonymity but what would stop them nominating a person to finger/thumbprint the back of a print. Would this not solve many issues..
Anyway thanks for any clarity, thoughts or education you can bring to me on this!!
Cheers guys

quick question on unsigned prints, by Agent Provocateur on Jun 12, 2014 7:28:47 GMT 1, Isn't it usually the more well known artists that have done unsigned prints? And because their signed prints are still quite spendy having an unsigned edition gives their buyers a lower price point to obtain their work?
Finger printing is a good idea, but as you say some artists (for anonimity) would prefer not to, but I don't think allotting someone else to fingerprint would be a good idea. As the extra person in the equation could want to do something different after a while, move on etc, then they'd have to employ someone else creating 'x' different fingerprints which would start to get messy.

quick question on unsigned prints, by johnnyh on Jun 12, 2014 8:01:58 GMT 1, Got to agree with AP. Only the Artist can and should finger print in my view.
Editions signed, unsigned AP's, PP's these days are really almost price points and exclusivity.
Eg smallest issue of a piece is a canvas, AP's PP's, Signed, unsigned and their prices follow but as AP says it is only a larger/better known artist that can produce and sell those numbers and satisfy demand but also their numbers particularly for unsigned are often quite large. Hence the price points for each targeted at their customer base.

quick question on unsigned prints, by Trevorm on Jun 12, 2014 9:18:55 GMT 1, There's also the fatigue issue that sets in - signing all those prints, wears one out!
Bit like me when I had a big (very big) lottery win last year. Didn't take long before I got fed up signing all those cheques. I just hand out the cash these days
