Question Regarding A Commission, by Wearology on Jul 22, 2014 12:22:03 GMT 1, My biggest issue is that you are conducting a business transaction between a collector who is often very passionate about art and an artist who is usually a creative type that has difficulty looking at their craft with a clear financial perspective. If the buyer complains than they are sometimes being perceived as difficult and if the artist is slow and modifies the specs. & image from the agreed piece than they are just using their creative license. It is often a no win situation for both parties involved. Maybe we can start a positive thread with artists that we have had good commission experiences with. I have had excellent commission experiences with Silent Bill, European Bob & Pahnl.

I have had excellent commission experiences with Silent Bill, European Bob & Pahnl. I agree in that I feel this is a no-win situation. Understand that certain artists have rigorous schedules and limited time in the studio for commissions so that may delay the timeline, or are ultimately the creative inspiration behind the piece, so the direction in which they take it might be slightly different, and I'm fine with those. However, I'm moreso set dimensionally on what is agreed upfront (particularly when its mainly because someone didn't double check details).

Question Regarding A Commission, by mrblast on Jul 23, 2014 7:56:16 GMT 1, I had a commission done and originally agreed the piece would be 1mx1m. When it was finished it ended up being 1m x 0.5m so there was quite a discrepancy. However, I still absolutely loved the piece and was delighted with it. If you feel the difference in size creates a big problem for you then you should say something as it was not what you agreed. However, if it is more the principle but you still like the piece I would just forget about it.

Question Regarding A Commission, by ABC on Jul 23, 2014 16:59:26 GMT 1, The size is a pretty important part of the Commission for me. If someone takes the time to ask for a commissioned work, then they obviously have specific place/gap they want to fill. If I wanted a 5ft ladder and I were sent a 4 foot one I'd be pissed off a little. A Commission is a agreement, yes the artist has his creative liscense but they should always try and work to the scale requested. Sometimes artists forget to take into account the additional canvas required that gets eaten up with stretching, mistakes happen. It should be an enjoyable process though not one that leaves a bitter taste.

Question Regarding A Commission, by bjornca on Jul 23, 2014 17:18:15 GMT 1, As a quick update, touched base further with the artist and they have been more than generous in resolving the situation, offering both to recomplete or provide a more than fair discount. Have handled this very professionally, and positively changed the dynamics of an initially disappointing situation. Now I just need to figure out what to do, as I want to be reasonable based on how they have handled themselves, and the time / effort / resources that already went into the piece.
Appreciate the feedback from everyone on the thread.

Personal choice would be a new piece at the right size. Money will get wasted, but art is forever. (well not really but you get the idea)

I have had excellent commission experiences with Silent Bill, European Bob & Pahnl. That's a good idea! Kind of thread like the "good dealing with" thread, right? Yes I would like start a positive thread titled "good dealings with artists" just like we have a "good dealings with forum members" one. I don't want to be a part of a bad dealings with thread because there is always 2 sides to every story especially when 2 creative minded people are conducting a business transaction dealing with art.
