Why is modern art so bad?, by mmmike on Sept 6, 2014 17:06:32 GMT 1, What a pompous dick. I disagree with pretty much everything he said. If you want just old school skill applied to the same old subject matters, you might as well just take a photograph these days.
Personal expression and inclusiveness are attributes of the modern art that I'm drawn to. IMO that has lifted art past reproduction that in most cases can be done better by a 5 year old with a camera phone these days.
This guy is positioning his opinions as objective while they are completely subjective opinions.

Why is modern art so bad?, by South Bound on Sept 6, 2014 19:03:06 GMT 1, Have not had the chance to watch yet, but it sounds like this guy is falling into the same trap as many did in the early 20th century. Basically overlooking the new art movements and in the end being left behind by those who took advantage of the opportunity.
The best example of this is (or was) "The Barnes" art museum in philly. Watch the doc "Art Of The Steal" (I hope I got the name write), specifically when they talk about the founding of it to see what I mean. Amazing to see paintings now worth in the tens (and hundreds) of millions purchased for peanuts solely because the art movement was not considered relevant at the time.
Edit: meant to say that the Barnes took advantage of others lack of foresight and their art prejudice.

Why is modern art so bad?, by South Bound on Sept 6, 2014 20:38:41 GMT 1, Finally watched, It would have been nice if he would have mentioned that many of the renaissance paintings and sculptures (whose artists he referenced) were destroyed or "edited" by both contemporaries and future generations as being seen as pornographic and related this to his modern day statement of modern art.

Why is modern art so bad?, by Deleted on Sept 7, 2014 20:20:07 GMT 1, He compared Michaelangelo's David, a piece of sculptural art or statue, to an exterior and experiential architectural element of the MOMA, and not to a piece of modern art or statue INSIDE the MOMA?
What a manipulative liar.

Robert Florczak - "Artist" and "Illustrator"
Well, he has his opinion and I have mine.
I think he needs to do a little less talking and a lot more looking.

Why is modern art so bad?, by bullysonzx10r on Sept 8, 2014 1:45:49 GMT 1, I hate when people break art down into something that can be graded. When I think of art, I think of anything that moves me. Sure that may not make sense to everyone, but I'm more impressed with the natural art found in the insane colors of fall leaves than I am with most classic oil paintings.

Why is modern art so bad?, by Deleted on Sept 8, 2014 2:30:39 GMT 1, this guy really sucks ass.
but my 2 cents: something that has contributed to what he calls the worsening of art is the invention of photography; it became easier to replicate realistic looking images, so artists began to look outside of pure replication and into their imaginations for inspiration. that's got to be part of the equation at least

Why is modern art so bad?, by Mark Perronet on Sept 8, 2014 13:13:50 GMT 1, Dreadful nonsense..he says we have been "deepened" by classical art in the first minute..? doesn't mention Duchamp which you can't do if you are discussing the evolution of modern art, but a look at Prager uni, as Bales obviously did, reveals plenty...its basically just a website with a lot of 5 minute videos spouting reactionary nonsense about how there is proof there is a god and how feminists have got it wrong...was too nauseated to look at the videos on the Middle East, and the Vietnam War eeech. I suppose for the sort of knuckle dragging inbred morons they hope to influence.. 5 minutes of concentration is asking quite a lot.

Why is modern art so bad?, by Rouen Cathedral on Sept 8, 2014 19:51:17 GMT 1, I think he has a couple okay points. I mean there is a lot of 'bad' art. His fault is that he tries to take it to the extreme and then it becomes quite laughable.
His use of 'examples' make no sense. His smock that looks like a pollock doesn't look at all like a pollock and if his graduate students think so then they are quite dumb and should fail. Anyone that's studies pollock can attest that they aren't 'just a bunch of paint'. That notion and anyone that believes so is quite uneducated.
His figure skating example is ridiculous. His notion that artists demand to be accepted as artists falls flat as well.
I wonder who he sees as a good artist? I mean how would he categorize chuck close? Half good with his hyperrealsm works and half bad with his abstract works?
The guy is definitely a clown but I think there can be some real critiques of modern art. He just tries to over play it and comes off looking silly.

Why is modern art so bad?, by randomname on Sept 9, 2014 0:00:57 GMT 1, Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach.
Given that he compared his apron to a Jackson Pollack painting, I think it's fairly obvious he's a failed artist working in academia. It's a shame that hundreds of young, aspiring artists have to be exposed to bitter ass clowns like this who blame society for their own failings in life.

I've always hated that lazy snide saying, I'm not a teacher but fuck me they've got a damn important job and actually need to be valued...

I agree. I am certain I couldn't do it. I have a couple of friends who are German teachers. The respect for the profession there seems much more in line with the difficult and important job that they do.

I've always hated that lazy snide saying, I'm not a teacher but f**k me they've got a damn important job and actually need to be valued... You can hate it all you like, but there's a truth to it, particularly in creative fields. Universities are filled with writers, artists and musicians who weren't talented enough to make a living at it commercially. And they are often bitter as a result.
That said, it doesn't apply to all teachers, or even most. There are some very talented individuals who teach because they enjoy doing it. But that doesn't make the saying any less applicable to individuals like this who teach for less admirable reasons.
