If you are used to this Forum then I am sure you will see some new artists you dont know yet. It has a good mixture of Graffiti/Street Art both sides represented well. I learn alot from this forum about street Artists that I had no clue existed, not always impressed with all of them but atleast I get some knowledge about new artists, depending upon what you are into I am sure you will get something out of it. They also always have some insightful interviews and features with prominent collectors and so forth.

The Urban Contemporary Art Guide 2014, by graffuturism on Oct 1, 2014 21:57:14 GMT 1, Flipping through it quickly at work today I was missing two names, Parra and Honet, two artist I've followed for some years now. But I guess there's always going to be names missing. I didn't think much of it till I read a note on the last page: "Note For reasons best known to them, artists HuskMitNavn, Parra and Shepard Fairey did not agree to be featured in the "Talents" section of this publication. Jayone, JR, Os Gรชmeos and Honet did not respond to our invitation." The "Talents" section is pretty much what this book is about. Do you guys think that some (the above) artists took that the wrong way? I mean, to have young artists like Demsky and Felipe Pantone (for example) and older more established artists like Seen and Futura in one catagory is a bit strange if you ask me. I mean, Obey is a talented guy, but I wouldn't call him a talent, like he's some up and coming artist. Splitting it up in two or more catagories might not be a bad idea? Not saying this is what made the mentioned artists decide not to be featured, like they said, the only one who knows are the artists themselfs. Good point about the different sections maybe for established artists and maybe a market update on them and emerging artists or talent. I dont think the artists that didnt respond or said not care anyways at this point in there careers to be featured in anything. Some artists just dont care as much as others do, that would be my guess. I doubt they even know what the guide is about.

The Urban Contemporary Art Guide 2014, by Someones Brain on Oct 10, 2014 8:13:19 GMT 1, The book's a good guide even though some relevant artists are missing (mostly due to the rather strict and formalisitc scheme the editors use to make a decision re: an artist's inclusion in the book). But still it's very informative. I recently used it to illustrate the variety/diversity of current street and urban art when talking about my art passion to (sceptical) folks who don't know nothing about it ... and it worked very well.

Curious to what Formalistic scheme your referring to. From what I gather in past editions some artists are added some fall off for whatever reasons and new artists are added. It might be a bit boring if each year it was a recycling of the same artists. I also feel its tough for anyone to curate 100 artists in this genre without leaving out so many. It is created in Paris so you can see the french curation a bit, other than that I think it is a great publication, especially since its the only one of its kind in the genre.

I'm at work so I don't have the book with me right now, but the process of choosing who's in and who's out and the criteria applied are at length described in the book (before the artists section). For example (if I remember correctly) artists must have a solo show in a gallery or a museum and a group show in the respective year. As far as I can judge it that could explain why some artists, even bigger names, that are quite active (painting an travelling) at the moment aren't in the book. Again, I understand the french curation and I really like the book so I'm not bashing the selection of artists. I just couldn't find some names I was looking for.

Just a short addition: the formal publication criteria applied by the book's editors can be found at page 006 of the english version (professional artist living off their sales, solo exhibition + group exhibition in the respective year, international collaboration with a gallery outside their own ountry, etc.). Hope that helps ...
