Asking for prices for private sales, by Swiss Alan on Oct 5, 2014 10:06:28 GMT 1, Am I just being an old man or does anyone else think it is bad form to ask for the price a piece went for in a private sale? After responding to a message if a piece I'd offered for sale a couple of months ago was still available, telling the forum member it had been sold, the forum member asked "how much did it sell for"? Not even a please or thank you. Personally I believe the first rule of a private sale is it remains a private sale and asking for info is simply not done. Thoughts?

Asking for prices for private sales, by johnnyh on Oct 5, 2014 10:40:05 GMT 1, You could just be helpful and tell them what it went for......not sure what a piece sells for or what you pay for something makes much diff not sure there is any great secret
I usually tell people if they ask

Agree I've has just that from someone who had no intention of purchasing and was just someone who was a flipper concerned with the value of their 'stock'. Best to ignore or say 50 million

Asking for prices for private sales, by mojo on Oct 5, 2014 11:25:43 GMT 1, Private means private so no ......... say nothing. Alternatively you could ask to see their bank statements or ask how much they earn ...... see how they like it.

Asking for prices for private sales, by Dungle on Oct 5, 2014 11:28:24 GMT 1, Dont really think its that big deal.
If you don't wanna tell then don't, not sure what you lose by providing the info though.

Asking for prices for private sales, by Street Art Fan on Oct 5, 2014 12:35:11 GMT 1, Not sure what the big deal is. Maybe the person who asked missed out on the opportunity to buy it and genuinely wanted to know the sales price as a frame of reference?
Why the secrecy?

Asking for prices for private sales, by Deleted on Oct 5, 2014 13:45:39 GMT 1, If it's a private sale then why should a seller say to a stranger how much they sold something for.
Too many nosey people today.

Too many nosey people today. I'm in agreement - if it's private then you should respect that. You're also showing your respect the person you sold the piece too wwho may not want the price disclosed - after all its their piece at that point. I hadn't considered mis-quoting, which whilst I'm not going to do that, found it amusing....

Asking for prices for private sales, by Deleted on Oct 5, 2014 14:26:55 GMT 1, If you dont want to tell the price it sold for, just tell the person asking so? Whats wrong with asking? There are a lot of for sale threads that lack an asking price, so i dont see anything wrong with asking what it sold for.

Asking for prices for private sales, by tas on Oct 5, 2014 14:36:45 GMT 1, Most of the sales threads here say "PM with offers" (read: I'm going to take the highest offer). If I messaged you with an offer and didn't get it, I'd want to know the price so I can be prepared for the next time it comes up for sale. Now if I message FR I'd be screwed.
I've had lots of people ask me what items sold for, I'll tell them, doesn't bother me. If for some reason I don't want to say then I'll respond as such.

Asking for prices for private sales, by WOOF on Oct 5, 2014 14:48:37 GMT 1, If the buyer / seller requests privacy concerning the details of a sale, privacy is what they get. And even if they don't, I usually still don't say - it's no ones business, especially not some random user I've never spoken to in my life.

Asking for prices for private sales, by sgolby on Oct 5, 2014 16:19:48 GMT 1, I think they should remain private if that is what the buyer and seller agree to. I know some of you may think this is contradictory to my thread in the for sale forum. However I only stated an asking price should be listed, or in an auction that all bids be public to avoid scamming. The final sale price, if negotiated in private and asked to remain private should remain so. If however someone asks and you feel comfortable telling them, then also, feel free to do so. I generally wouldn't have an issue telling someone whom I had a good feeling about on here what I bough/paid for an artwork. S

Asking for prices for private sales, by jlf on Oct 5, 2014 16:34:41 GMT 1, I don't see anything wrong with asking, especially if you are looking for one then you at least know the rough price you could have to pay

Asking for prices for private sales, by Deleted on Oct 6, 2014 6:22:27 GMT 1, I'm not offended when asked, although a complete lack of introduction/please/thank you is a bit rude given the context. Answer depends on the asker.

Asking for prices for private sales, by alittle on Oct 6, 2014 7:02:16 GMT 1, I've had people ask and they are usually quite polite about it, so I have no problem sharing the details of a given transaction.
