New Pøbel at ABC, by Karl Read on Oct 19, 2014 16:22:06 GMT 1, Love Pobel!
I really like this, not digging the ones with text but likening the others. Can't afford the canvas but tempted with the cardboard. Would go great next to my lofoten.

New Pøbel at ABC, by natstan on Oct 19, 2014 16:23:05 GMT 1, Can someone please explain what on earth this is all about, in cod we trust, that's got me shaking my head with disbelief. Is this the same artist that was in Banksy's cans festival? And it's the first time I have ever seen a "test spray" come in an edition. Is there a group of urban art fishermen that this is meant to appeal to? Someone help me out with an explanation please.
Don't know what to think about this as well... Whatson, DDD and now this... Big gulp when you think about what they have in common

I just have the feeling with some art recently that it's a case of the emperors new clothes, the name proceeds the art in the buying process. Always been that way... but when it becomes "mainstream cool" and profitable at the same time it leads to this. Wow... witty play on the saying in god we trust... and it works because he is from scandinavia and they fish there right? Just like a hardcore dude on a cow right... I mean they have cows there and he don't need no motorcycle to be harcore? Sorry fellas, but I don't get this.
To each his own though, I am sure I have stuff on my walls that you lot would think is stupid...

Been a fan for many years, it's a great image.
For me it has nothing to do with the name, nothing to do with value of a name. Although I have noticed in recent years that's the biggest concern on the forum. Pøbel is in my opinion one of the best stencil artists out there, and it would be an honour to have something like this on my wall.
But really, I don't understand why people not liking the art still takes time to comment, not necessarily your comment, but people writing "pass" or something like that on a thread with a new print release, makes no sense.
I see tons of things I don't like everyday, from art to houses, dinner tables and washing machines. If I had to run around everyday say "pass" or "I don't like this" on all these things, I wouldn't have time for anything else.
We just have to face the fact that people like different things.

Thank You for your answer Martin. I totally agree with your comment about people posting "pass" on a new print release, just as annoying as those that post "want". I admit I don't really have any feeling of liking for this piece and am only posting in this thread because I'm asking for an explanation, what is happening in this image, is it placing a statement on the table, is it asking a question? I ask this as in the past Pøbel has produced art with a message. Unless I understand what is going on it looks to me like a stencil of a bloke with a large fish and a very bad play on words over the top.. The fact there are words attached should signify a message? if so, what is he trying to say?
Fish is good for your well-being? ;P

New Pøbel at ABC, by gatecrasher on Oct 19, 2014 17:30:42 GMT 1, Maybe every release thread should have an alternative thread at the same time. We could have one thread for the people who like the image, want to discuss it positively it etc. Then the alternative thread for people who want to say "pass" and ask what the image means.
I like the image, the play on words makes me smile and I think Pobel is at the top his game with stencils. I won't be buying though because I'm skint.

Big gulp when you think about what they have in common I don't think those other two fellows should be mentioned when talking about Pobel besides them all happening to be Norwegian. He is far superior in placement and execution and is simply just much more talented. Much of his work is a bit too morose for me to display at home but I think he is one of the most exciting street artists out there at the moment and he only releases two prints a year as opposed to the other two who release one every other month.

New Pøbel at ABC, by Karl Read on Oct 19, 2014 17:40:40 GMT 1, My take on this image, (and I'm sure Pobel meant it to be something completely different) is, the fisherman is grateful for what is making him a living. Like all my art I collect, I have my own reasons for liking them and I like to come up with my own message. Sometimes it's as the curator intended, sometimes it's just how I see it through my eyes. If it means something to me, I buy it.

Regarding this one I believe member virus is right. It's about the oil. Not necessarily like quoted, but about the oil taking over, people just want to fish.

New Pøbel at ABC, by Dr Plip on Oct 19, 2014 17:58:33 GMT 1, I take the image as:
1) Norway has very successfully maintained Cod stocks. The fishermen are probably very pleased with this. They can use these fish as both food and a source of income. Thank Cod.
(I don't encourage the kidnapping and murder of fish though)
2) Cod sounds like God. Switch God with Cod to make a fish-based pun. Puns and street art often work well together. You could also go with "In Dog We Trust", while using an image of a Vet with a Dog. Vets rely on Dogs for income but not as a source of food. Not the good vets anyway.
That's my take on the image. I'm probably wrong. If there is even a right and wrong.
Edit: 3) This man's pet Cod could just have fallen sick and he's praying to God (or Ægir), in the hope that the God will heal his fish.

Very good... please don't link me in with the "pass" brigade. I'm asking a the question as the image must mean something that someone understands. I ask as I want to know, the message is not clear to me and I feel there is one. pobel has been working a lot in the northern parts of norway in areas plagued with unemployment and depopulation. old towns with lots of local fishermen are now vanishing, as big vessels do the job that the locals were doing years ago. the outfit with rainwear and knitted sweater is also very typical and depicting the traditional values of the old times when each man had his own boat and fishing rights were not owned by big companies. pobel in my opinion is an artist with integrity and a political voice. he should should be given credit for his work, and the fact that he is not releasing prints or canvases every second day. Pobel is popular by collectors because he`s got something to say - which in my opinion is a scarce commodity among many of todays artist. (IMO)

Dunno if that has anything to do with this image.. OK, so it is a political statement... Then it makes sense that people from that part of the world would understand it.
None the less, it is a weak play on words, and the prices are nuts making it feel like a piece made solely to cash out in my opinion. Surely something this specific should not be selected by an artist as a multiple run of HPM's. If it was an actual poster* sold at a low price in order to further the debate, then I would not be opposed to it.
Just my thoughts...
* EDIT- by "actual poster," i mean high number run or open edition.

New Pøbel at ABC, by madeinnorway on Oct 19, 2014 19:45:43 GMT 1, Really like this piece, for me it symbolises that cod has kept the people, living in the north alive for centuries and good left them a loong time ago and cod is all they have and now oil? If someone here on the forum charts one and dont want it please pass it on, my slow intetnet will for sure let me down again. To me pøbel is one of the few Norwegian artists that still has cred, he could have released so many prints of older great pieces, but seldom releases anything.

New Pøbel at ABC, by overend on Oct 19, 2014 19:52:30 GMT 1, I love this. But I am a norwegian. In Norway there is a big debate going on regarding offshore oil drilling in the Lofoten area, the same area where the fish breeds. Risking the fish for more oil.
£750 for an original piece seems more than reasonable to me bearing in mind the standing of the artist.

New Pøbel at ABC, by gletak on Oct 19, 2014 20:52:04 GMT 1, Can someone please explain what on earth this is all about, in cod we trust, that's got me shaking my head with disbelief. Is this the same artist that was in Banksy's cans festival? And it's the first time I have ever seen a "test spray" come in an edition. Is there a group of urban art fishermen that this is meant to appeal to? Someone help me out with an explanation please. This is a motive i belive he did right in the harbour of Henningsvær. Throughout history, cod fishing has been the main living industry in that area and in the areas including Lofoten, Vesterålen and Senja. In the time before the management plan for oil drilling and oil production in Lofoten, Vesterålen and Senja was finish revised before 2011 it was a major political issue in Norway which engaged a big part of the Norway population and splitted the political parties of Norway in two.
They knew there were large deposits of oil in areas worth billions and the big question in this issue was if it could be hazardous to the environment and could we risk the fish population in these key areas.
IMO this is a very good motive and has a very strong message but i think i feel that because im Norwegian and know the background of this movtive.
I believe this does not appeal to as many non-Norwegians and those who dont know the background of this motive.
