Kaws, by pearlyking on Nov 21, 2014 18:39:06 GMT 1, Hi,
Can anyone advice me on Kaws pieces plz?
I missed the whole Kaws movement and if I'm honest am decided on how actually feel about his stuff BUT that said, am thinking of starting a collection in my kids room!
What's the RIGHT price to pay for a spongebob set and the ups/down set?
Also does anyone know of a decent seller?
What were they priced at originally?
Sorry for all the questions haha

Assume by that response that Kaws isn't really considered fitting for this forum?!? I'm honestly not sure about it myself but it seems to hold some pretty prestigious galleries/ museums/shows around the world...which leaves me split! What's your opinion?

I think they are $3000-$4000/per but I could be way off....would love a set myself. jayawesum24 knows all things Kaws. Maybe he can drop some knowledge?

Kaws, by jayawesum24 on Nov 21, 2014 19:46:58 GMT 1, Spongebob set- Catching them as a set would hit you for 15k, if ur patient u can try to catch them randomly from 3,500-4k each. Thats a fair rate for them. And you can find them for those prices. But on the flipper/high rate side 4,500-5 each. Retail was 1,200 when the yellow first released then 1,400 for the other 2. I could b wrong but that was the price range for them as retail.
Ups and down set expect to pay over 28k-35k. retail was 24k plus shipping/taxes.

Kaws, by Deleted on Nov 21, 2014 20:27:44 GMT 1, Personally, I don't really like Kaws as much as a lot of other people do - too cartoon-y for me. If I wanted a cartoonish image on my wall, I would take one of the recent Jerkface prints over a Kaws (which I did - they're really well done and a fraction of the price)
Yes, I know Kaws has a long history and deserves the large fanbase he has. And I wouldn't be surprised if he was a big influence on Jerkface (and countless others). I just don't see his work as bridgeing hi and low art, like many of his fans do

Assume by that response that Kaws isn't really considered fitting for this forum?!? I'm honestly not sure about it myself but it seems to hold some pretty prestigious galleries/ museums/shows around the world...which leaves me split! What's your opinion? No, it was suggested as there are a few KAWS threads on their forum that have been running for years - like 600 pages or so. Some people there periodically update many of his releases with pricing.
As with any artist understanding KAWS comes from reading his history and what he's about.
He started out tagging, and because he had a talent not confined to bubble letters he grew as an artist and made (and continues to make) his mark.
He actually worked for Disney out of art school but soon hit the streets, opting to subvert imagery. In his words regarding cartoons, he "found it weird how infused a cartoon could become in people's lives; the impact it could have, compared to regular politics."
Between the museum shows, gallery shows, recent auction prices, redoing of the MTV statue, Macy's Thanksgiving parade ballon and more, he's managed to bring his message into the mainstream.
Of course none of this means someone has to like him. I remember stoned arguments with my fellow art school friends years ago where they thought Warhol sucked and I loved his work.
How we may feel is subjective. The art world has already made their decision regarding KAWS.
Here's a bunch of his things with recent auction prices: www.phillips.com/search/1/?search=kaws
I believe the recent Accomplice sale ( ยฃ266,500 ) was at the same auction as the Banksy phone booth.

Wicked post! Thank you so much!
I've had the same debate over Warhol (I love him) and Kaws seems to bring about the same debate.
Rly tempted to buy the spongebob set now...but boy is it a lot of money!!!

Kaws, by Con Art Studio on Nov 22, 2014 16:32:07 GMT 1, Retail for the yellow was actually 800 and was in person only in NYC...still kicking myself for not making the trip or buying one at a good price after release. ย They then went up to 1200 for the other 2 and were online.
Yellow was not in person only. 80 of the edition of 100 were sold in person, the remaining 20 were sold online through the Aldrich museum... And as you can imagine, the entire world of kaws fans trying to purchase those 20 prints online caused a complete server meltdown. I was one of the lucky who managed to score a print online from Aldrich.

Love Jerkface! Have a few prints and chat to him from time to time...wanted to bring him to London but think he's on lockdown for a bit! He's a top bloke tho.
He has a show going in NYC at the mo. Would love to check it out!

Kaws, by bonesy on Nov 23, 2014 3:11:47 GMT 1, I'm thinking the days of $2k are gone. I'd say $3k is a good price these days. A Red went on paddle 8 a few weeks back, It was around $3500 plus buyers 15% before auction end (didn't see where it ended)

Kaws, by cmodart on Nov 23, 2014 4:58:14 GMT 1, KAWS is an established contemporary artist with staying power. The High museum showed KAWS in a major space between Ellsworth Kelly and Gerhard Richter. I can't remember if that was when they had the girl with the pearl earring or before. Probably 3 years ago.
I own a kawsbob yellow, so maybe people think I'm hyping, but the prices you guys are throwing around are ridiculous. $6k for a SET... $2k for a yellow...? A kawsbob yellow just sold for $3200 + 22% ~ $3900 at auction in Nov. I thought sub $4k was a decent price.

Kaws, by Deleted on Nov 24, 2014 0:32:17 GMT 1, kaws is one of the most important graffiti artists turned high artist of our generation. The guys career has been incredible.
Gorkie has a matching spongebob set, and I know a while ago it could have been on the table, but since I believe he has framed them. Worth a shot if your pockets are deep.

Kaws, by sohohoho on Nov 24, 2014 2:03:57 GMT 1, I'm thinking the days of $2k are gone. I'd say $3k is a good price these days. A Red went on paddle 8 a few weeks back, It was around $3500 plus buyers 15% before auction end (didn't see where it ended) Red Kawsbob print started at $2.8k, hammered at $3.5k + 15%
Black Dissected print started at $3k, hammered at $4.3k + 15%

Take for example the Retna print from the Provocateurs show up on Paddle 8 right now. Its bid up to $2600, there are multiples for sale on ebay for 1k. But, I guess a fool and their money paddle8.com/work/retna/45994-untitled-for-art-alliance-in-chicago

Perhaps, but I've seen the yellow Bob recently just a shade under $5k. The prices won't go lower. I was going to sell my pink accomplice last year for $950 but didn't and now $1,800 seems to be the price with people starting to push past $2,000.

Kaws, by ksn on Nov 25, 2014 5:34:51 GMT 1, You could also look into the originalfake figures as a cheap entry point. For the price of a print, you could get several of these to put around the kids room (astroboy, woodstock, etc are all kind of cute)
