Mounted or unmounted, by flaggy on Dec 19, 2014 9:50:57 GMT 1, I took 5 prints down to the framers yesterday, first time taking anything to framers i usually just do it myself but as I've got a bit more into the art world I wanted something a bit more professional on the walls, anyway I spent a long time carefully choosing the actuall frame but for some reason only choose to get one mounted ( eine-revolution) due to its deckled edges, after looking through a few photos I'm starting to think I've made a mistake and might go back down and change my mind before they start them?
the prints are
aleesio b- 4ever red edition european bob- save wild tigers cheba x inkie- wizard mydogsighs- bristol hug
Just a bit of advice and guidance weather to get back down there and get them mounted
cheers

Mounted or unmounted, by I like pictures on Dec 19, 2014 10:35:49 GMT 1, Float mounting a print that has rough edges is always good IMO. here is a pic of one of my prints float mounted with deckled edges. If you mean float mounting then I personally would stick with it, I try to have all my prints mounted in this way but it is personal preference at the end of the day.

Mounted or unmounted, by flaggy on Dec 19, 2014 11:11:56 GMT 1, Yea the eine prints I have decided to get float mounted but the other 4 I'm just gonna have in a frame with no mounting( kind of like a border I guess) which is the decision I'm not sure about I think. Its been driving me mad! But in the shop I tested the mounting out with a frame on each print and wasn't sure but looking at photos I think I need to get them mounted

Mounted or unmounted, by SturbanHasSaggyTits on Dec 19, 2014 11:27:17 GMT 1, You definitely want to have some sort of mount. Deckled edges are there to be shown, so I would float these. I would try and stay with off white plain mounts with most prints. I personally think coloured mounts should be rarely used as it detracts from the print and can make them look cheap.

Mounted or unmounted, by Happy Shopper on Dec 19, 2014 12:10:30 GMT 1, Non of my prints have mounts. Most are float mounted, and one is framed to the edge (as it was a big print anyway, and just didn't need it)
I think it depends on the style of print and the look you want to go for. For me, I always keep it neutral, to not distract from the image or draw the eye away.

Mounted or unmounted, by Justdave on Dec 19, 2014 12:46:42 GMT 1, I think it all depends on the image. All of my prints are floated or framed with a plain mount. But on this picture something different was suggested and I think it works perfectly.

Mounted or unmounted, by randomname on Dec 19, 2014 17:23:10 GMT 1, I'd recommend being as specific as possible. If you just say "floated," you might get it back attached directly to the mat.
I usually get a raised float if I float mount something. In which case, they put either a 1/8" or 3/16" piece of foam core behind it to raise it off the mat and give it some depth.
You'll also want to be specific about how deep you want the spacers to be. I prefer to give it at least an inch or so to create some depth. Sometimes I even do this when I'm not floating the piece and have it behind a mat.
Also, if you're floating it, it's a good idea to get the print flat before you take it to the framer. I usually let mine sit sandwiched between a couple pieces of acid free mat board for a couple months if I'm going to float it.

Mounted or unmounted, by flaggy on Jan 18, 2015 4:11:50 GMT 1, Thanks for the advice, sorry for the one picture per post but it wouldn't let me flick from screen to screen to copy and paste links, got them back not too long ago and I love them, not gonna be to everyone's taste but there perfect for me, photos don't do them justice as was taken on a iPad, all done for a very reasonable price aswell.

Mounted or unmounted, by bgt5002 on Jan 18, 2015 6:41:38 GMT 1, Depends. I've seen a few pieces float mounted where the paper quality of the print is so poor, it makes the piece look like a cheap poster framed up.

Mounted or unmounted, by dashboll on Jan 18, 2015 7:41:48 GMT 1, For info, when I spoke to my framer they warned me against not using a mount and having the piece fill the frame (ie go right up to the edges). Apparently your frame can get hot and cold along with the temperature of the house which can lead to moisture affecting the print. By using a mount this acts as a buffer and prevents damage to the print. It's not meant to be uncommon to remove a print and mount from a frame to see moisture marks or damp marks on the mount.
Here endeth the lesson!

Mounted or unmounted, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Jan 18, 2015 9:51:30 GMT 1, I love decked edges and floated two large josh keyes pieces. Also floated my banksy donuts and strangely it has one top deckled edge (must have been end of the roll), but it doesn't look as good, so it would look better with a decent mount I think.

Mounted or unmounted, by flaggy on Jan 18, 2015 17:40:54 GMT 1, Yea I'm very pleased with inkie and alessio b prints in particular, and hug and European bob prints are for my sons room so went with something more colourful. All done for ยฃ320 which I thought was very reasonable!

Mounted or unmounted, by Dice on Jan 18, 2015 21:11:01 GMT 1, I would always float mount expensive prints as if you choose to sell in the future buyers will probably want assurance that the paper edges are in good condition, this way you won't need to de frame it. If done properly (ie hinged at the top only) the paper is free to move as and when it needs to which should prevent the rippling effect.
I prefer float mounting anyway as IMO the entire sheet of paper is part of the art and I wouldn't want to cover it up at all.
