Everybody okay in paris?, by sgolby on Jan 8, 2015 1:50:45 GMT 1, Please do not confuse my statement with an accusation. Were i accusing you, i would not have said "seem to subscribe to." All i am saying is that violence is cyclical, but so too can peace. What makes peace more difficult to maintain is that when force is used to maintain peace it must be done with restraint or we risk becoming the beast. I applaud your work with oxfam, and applaud "We simply asked that everyone has a right to a fair chance of survival/happiness in this world." Even more. An eye for an eye only leads to two blind men fighting one another without seeing the other as his equal.... Once we begin to lose sight of this, we become the beasts, and when i read your earlier words that is the way i felt. I am a New Yorker, and on 9/11 all i wanted to do was grab a gun and go kill muslims. When bombs are lobbed into southern israel, meters from my families homes, i want to grab a gun and go kill palestinians. However, i remind myself that i must find the strength not to. I must differentiate between the beast and it's home or i become the beast myself. When this happens the terrorists win, because then i become a blind man fighting another blind mand, unable to see the beauty that is that man... Unable to see that he is my brother, but is blind to see it. So i must hug him, and make him feel that i am his brother... i do not fault you for your feelings. I do not hate you. I simply ask that you recognize that we can all become the beast, however if we do, then all we will do is devour one another, and we will never see beauty again... The best and most resonating post in this whole thread. I hear you and wish it could done. It won't happen though as ISIS have guns - we wouldn't get close enough to try and hug him to embrace him as a brother, as we'd be slain. All for our beliefs as Westerners.
There is no quick solution to this. Wish I knew but if Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jnr and all the other great speakers couldn't solve all problems present in their day, little people like myself cannot
Aye, not on your own... But together with discussion and debate... Maybe WE, both us and them, can...

Everybody okay in paris?, by Dr Plip on Jan 8, 2015 1:51:56 GMT 1, In the presence of inhumanity, I think we have to display the best of ourselves, not the worst. I'm not above using force, but I really think it would be great if we tried to kill as few innocent people as we possibly can.

Everybody okay in paris?, by Deleted on Jan 8, 2015 2:03:14 GMT 1, I propose that we do so in a way that not only destroys, but also builds... ย When we bomb in a vaccuum that is filled with one message, we only amplify that message... ย Not easy, but possible... Possible only if we accept that inso doing we will risk economic and physical security... Agree. Ultimately the problem will never be completely resolved unless it comes from within(the ~1.6billion Muslims). Radicals need to be marginalized/ostracized and removed from positions of power/education/leadership by fellow Muslims. Until that happens it will remain ugly IMO.
It's such a huge and complex problem and solution I don't think I can do little but scratch the surface with some observations:
- media, we need an impartial independent media that's not forcing a narrow worldview on the people
- international policy from the western countries that's not based on our needs, thats based on helping where helps needed
- help to strengthen the general populates voice in countries, invest in education, housing, infrastructure, listen to religious leaders understand what's needed and help impartially.
- do not impose our will on people's ways
- no solution can be summed in a 5 min news clip, it will take years and years and years and money lots of money
- help to protect people wherever they need it, train their police, their army, do this without agenda but for their betterment solely - base policy on research, talk to experts, do not react but act proactively -do not base solutions around political lifespans
Also as contrite as it sounds rise above the hatred, do not get blood on our hands, be brave, be strong, believe that good will prevail

Everybody okay in paris?, by thomasmer on Jan 8, 2015 5:05:51 GMT 1, What scared me as it always dose is the media reaction before there are any solid facts these days, no ones been caught, no one knows who they are, just straight anti Muslim hate speech from all of the usual news stations.
These people aren't Muslims, they're fanatics, just like the IRA, ETA, and all of the others, and they're just a handful of people pushed by a tiny handful of evil men.
The backlash upon the Muslim population of the world for this atrocity will be worse than the atrocity itself, mostly due to our press preying on us to sell papers and push their own agenda.

Everybody okay in paris?, by Black Apple Art on Jan 8, 2015 5:15:18 GMT 1, Only posting this to expose to true brutality of this senseless killing. It's one thing to talk and hear about it but when I saw this video... this attack impacted me in an entirely different way.
Warning: This is graphic!

Everybody okay in paris?, by andyroo0312 on Jan 8, 2015 8:05:41 GMT 1, So far it seems the slaughter was done by 2 brothers with a 3rd member handing him self into police a couple of hours ago.. It can be a cruel world we live in at times. I really hope we find life on other planets soon and maybe then we stop destroying our fellow man? and realize how petty and self obsessed we have become. My heart held thoughts go out to all that have unfortunately been touched by despicable act.

It does make my heart skip a beat when i see people from all walks coming together to give one clear message against anything in this world that is a negative its just a shame that it takes such events to make it happen.

Everybody okay in paris?, by neopzz on Jan 8, 2015 10:01:22 GMT 1, I'd like to say something about it... the images of the killing staying in my mind, and I just can't find the right words... We're all shoked in france... people are like zombies today... just hope the guilty will pay for it.
That really means a lot for us to see all the countries in the world, all the peoples behind us.
thanks for that...

How long did the attack take place for? Seemed like a long time for backup to arrive. Seemed to be a lot of overweight coppers out and about after the event.

Everybody okay in paris?, by balibob on Jan 8, 2015 11:37:37 GMT 1, Tragic is the only word I can think of and I feel for the people of Paris and the families of those who have suffered from the actions of these murderous bastards.
I read the Koran 30 years ago, mainly so I could argue with my Iranian mate about religion. He had read a bible for the same purpose, and to be fair we both pretty much disliked most organized faiths. The Koran is as much about peace as the Old Testament is, which means not a lot. Its stone this, smite that and execute them, and bow down before god or we lop off your nadgers.
Now all religions/races in the past have committed terrible atrocities. But that was generally in a different time. We all are, in so many ways, so different from even 50 years ago. The world changes, religions adapt and new morals replace old practices.
Christians, as far as I am aware, are no longer forbidden to wear clothes made of more than 1 fabric, they no longer keep slaves, stone adulteresses, chop hands off thieves, etc. etc. Mainly because the guidelines were written millennia ago and are out of date. Why hasn't Islam followed suit?
Why are the Imam's still preaching the absolute word of the Koran, with no consideration of a changing world. This allows fanatics to commit horrific acts, but cover themselves with the thought that they are following the word of their religion.
This will not stop, which is totally and utterly depressing. I dislike no one based on race, creed, colour or religion, even Arsenal supporters, but totally detest the thought of religion its self.
Please find me an area of the world where all religions are banned and I will move there today. We will find something else to argue about, but won't kill each other because one prays differently to another.

Everybody okay in paris?, by rosh on Jan 8, 2015 12:09:03 GMT 1, I'm french and profoundly chocked. Here is my statement:
Everybody has to keep fighting. Liberty, culture, art, press, democracy, respect are wonderful ideas. We are proud to live with it in our everyday life but we have to never forget that people' fight and fought for all those wonderful things. Never forget and keep fighting my friend.

Edit: I still don't have any appropriate words for what happended yesterday so I take resort in music. Peace.
