Lots of full-time crooks about, how best to protect yourself?
Thanks.

Advice on safely selling higher value items on here?, by sparky999 on Feb 2, 2015 18:06:39 GMT 1, Meet in a public place preferably one that has CCTV.
edit: this should be obvious but don't park your car 2 miles from the meet and think your safe walking to your car with $50k in your pocket. Ideally choose somewhere that has a car park right outside the building your meeting in.

Advice on safely selling higher value items on here?, by Deleted on Feb 2, 2015 18:23:31 GMT 1, In public, as others have said. If accepting loads of cash, something to check notes are legit. Have someone else with you if possible. A fake, duplicate item for the ol' switcheroo routine.

Advice on safely selling higher value items on here?, by Deleted on Feb 2, 2015 21:14:11 GMT 1, eg. selling a banksy to someone in the US, how would you deal with the finance? does paypal really provide you much insurance from fraud? my fear is that payment is made, print sent, then somehow (not going to detail and give ideas) payment is reversed and you have no money or print, and then have to deal with foreign police and a massive pain is the aris. i guess there has to be an element of trust at some point. anyone recently made a overseas sale and got advice on the method used? wondering if it's worth the stress and restricting sale to meet up only.

Paypal can leave you worried, and you don't want to be worried

Advice on safely selling higher value items on here?, by wishingiwaslucky on Feb 3, 2015 0:51:31 GMT 1, With Bank transfers taking minutes, and we all have iPads, smart phones etc...agree the price first, then meet and if all is good, make a bank transfer there and then, it may take a beer to go through, but if it's big money and serious, then should be ok. Once the funds are moved over, then take off. This only works on face to face though....I'm sure it has its downfall but anyone walking around with large amounts of dough are not really thinking straight.

Advice on safely selling higher value items on here?, by Galleri MDA on Feb 3, 2015 1:42:38 GMT 1, Bank transfer before pay pal every day of the week. If you are going to make a deal face to face and there is a lot of cash involved, make the deal at your bank office, let the bank check the cash and both of you are good to go.

Advice on safely selling higher value items on here?, by cmodart on Feb 3, 2015 13:50:54 GMT 1, Sell only to people with REFERENCES. I am a small fry, and I can still give you 20 references. Anyone that cannot has no business buying expensive items.

I guess it's a bad idea to get a reference. You win the Internet.

Advice on safely selling higher value items on here?, by Deleted on Feb 4, 2015 21:32:23 GMT 1, Sarcasm is a trait that doesn't translate so well to people who live in the USA, I guess it's the lack of cultural heritage?
I don't 'win' the internet, my point is that references from people you don't know on an internet forum quite frankly, are not worth the steam off my piss. That does not have much inherent value. That's not to say that there are not people on here who would donate a kidney to assist others because there is. There are others who would broker that deal for a couple of quid.....caveat emptor.

Unless you're being sarcastic. But I suspect you're not.

That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard, and couldn't be more off the mark... Unless you're being sarcastic. But I suspect you're not. Of course I'm being sarcy, or at least trying to...in a past life I worked for a firm where the guys in the NYC office had honed senses of humour, some of the most welcoming and warm people I've met I think.
I didn't agree with Cmodart's view around references and still don't, am entitled to my opinion where unless I know the person selling then references that they offer me (unless I know that referee) are worthless irrespective of whether they come from people off the internet or 'real' people.
The OP was asking a question around security of sales and perhaps there is a little bit of gut feeling which should come into play. I'd trust Trevorm as I've had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times but then I'd also trust DBSON although we've never met because they have a proven track record in delivering.......
