Shane Turner - "Right Here In My Arms" Print, by Shane Turner Art on Mar 6, 2015 17:02:23 GMT 1, Hey everyone. Will be releasing a new print today at 12pm EST (5pm UK time) at shop.shaneturnerart.com
Print is of a recent painting I did called "Right Here In My Arms"
It's a Giclรฉe Print on 300gsm Moab 100% Cotton Paper 18"x24" (19"x25" including 1/2 inch white border)
Signed/Numbered Edition of 75 price is 160$(Canadian)
While I'm doing this release myself, I do want to thank GP from Graffitiprints and JP from COA gallery for their advice, as this was my first independent print project. Really happy how this turned out.
Also, here's a time-lapse video of the painting being made for those who like that sort of thing:

Congrats on the new release, and happy to see you on here Thanks sษวpฤฑ ษo uoฤฑสษษนวpวษ, no idea how you got your name like that, messing with my brain. Huge fan of what goes on on this forum, very interesting place. Never heard of it til I started working with GP. Been here a while as a member, but don't post as often as Id like, a few times in the sketchbook thread mainly. Thanks again for the support, looking forward to putting out some solid stuff this year, hopefully you and some of the others here will enjoy.

Shane Turner - "Right Here In My Arms" Print, by alittle on Mar 7, 2015 15:46:09 GMT 1, earlgreytoast: Love the image, too bad you went the giclee route with these, otherwise I was in for one. I love how Psychameleon just pops off the paper at you. Any particular reason you switched it up?
shaneturner: Thanks earlgreytoast. Main reason was this painting used transparent colors on top of shaded underpainting. The result was a lot of subtle shading, color swirls that I feel would've been ridiculously difficult to try to capture with screenprinting. With giclee I was able to scan the painting in very high quality and make sure every little thing came out exactly how it looks in reality. Even the black background has all the canvas texture which is really awesome up close in person.
I do prefer the texture of silkscreen for my colorful pieces, with no shading, as they're much easier to recreate in layers. There will still be silkscreened pieces with Graffitiprints in the near future.
I'm just not sold on the value of doing tons of extra screens to recreate the shading on a piece like this when I've seen that in can be done a bit more simple and effectively with Giclee to get a really nice print.

Shane Turner - "Right Here In My Arms" Print, by Shane Turner Art on Mar 8, 2015 10:01:31 GMT 1, Yes natstan I agree, but what alittle copied into the convo here is what I believe in this case. While I prefer the silkscreen in general, but wasn't convinced it would be worth it on this occasion for the subtle shading. Currently looking into techniques to hybridize the two and see if it's feasible to do something with the shading/underpainting with giclee and then transparent colors silkscreened on top. Time will tell. But could be cool if it worked.

I thought so too earlier, but looking at eelus's recent prints like conjuring and sunmoning, it seems to be able to apply the same in shane's works? Of course, that drives up the cost and price...

Yes and no. While those prints are both really awesome, the shading involved is made from solid colors of spray spattered patterns, which is similar to doing halftones. While that is clearly the look eelus is going for, it wouldn't work the same here.
The shading in my painting is an underpainting with transparent colors painted over top. I'm not an expert on screenprinting by any means, but I would've thought to get the smooth shading to work would require many screens for each color from it's lightest to darkest value in the shaded areas, and then additional screens for all the subsequent colors that blend where blues, pinks and whites hit each other and mix throughout.
I imagine if done correctly it could be really awesome or if not just end up a trapping nightmare for a printer.
That being said if someone on here knows some examples of more traditionally painted shading captured in a screenprint I'd love to see them and try to figure out how it was done.
