Good read: Amount of money that art sells for is shocking, by Deleted on Mar 9, 2015 2:36:39 GMT 1, Good read and Richters statement
""Gerhard Richter, the world-famous German painter, has expressed his incredulity at the astronomical sums paid for his works, calling the art market โhopelessly excessiveโ and saying that prices are rarely a reflection on quality""
I have always said that.

Good read: Amount of money that art sells for is shocking, by natstan on Mar 9, 2015 3:15:42 GMT 1, I especially liked the part he said he didn't think one of that work that was sold for loads of money was even good, ha. And here we are on this forum, defending some of our favorite (and invested) artist's latest works without a thought. It's a joke on us when you think what an artist might possibly think to himself for some of his or her lesser works 'why did I release this kind of bulls**t?'.

Good read: Amount of money that art sells for is shocking, by Deleted on Mar 9, 2015 3:20:36 GMT 1, I see art for what it is and not for how much it sold for.
The sale price makes no difference to me and just because an artist is in the media and sells through expensive galleries makes no difference either.
There is a reason a painting sells for thirty million.
tax offset or just clever delaers taking money off gullible mega rich people.
Sort of buy this shit for millions ou know how wonderful you will be whne you buy it.
If people fall for the hype more fool them.

Good read: Amount of money that art sells for is shocking, by Black Apple Art on Mar 9, 2015 3:43:16 GMT 1, Big fan of Richter but seems a little harsh to call the buyer of his own work "foolish". Nothing like having the creator of the piece you just bought calling you an ass in front of the world. That aside, his quote: โWe artists get next to nothing from such an auction. Except for a small morsel, all the profit goes to the seller" might be true for that one specific sale but to turn a blind eye to the obvious affect these sales have on his future works to be sold is dismissive and misleading. Whether he actually increases his prices or not is up to him but to dismiss record breaking auction results as events that are not beneficial for him is ridiculous. Possible he really doesn't know any better but I highly doubt that. Juist a few things that seemed off but love the guy and his documentary Gerhard Richter Painting is truly amazing.

He must have art on his walls surely? ie. artists who inspired him? he must be rich enough to collect these?

I like his early stuff and the fact that he tried different syles.
I also like artists who don't use assistants.
I think it's good that Richter says what he thinks and I doubt he cares.
He is eighty years old has made his mark and a multi millionaire.
Of course there might be some animosity towards people he has dealt with in the past.
It's normal but he can't complain.
It's only splodging paint on canvas.
Hardly a big deal considering.

Good read: Amount of money that art sells for is shocking, by barnsy on Mar 9, 2015 20:41:54 GMT 1, Nice article, makes an interesting read.
Have to admit I don't really get his work.
Reminds me a bit of Jackson Pollock and I don't get his work either.
Saying that wouldn't mind owning one about to go to auction.

Good read: Amount of money that art sells for is shocking, by Deleted on Mar 10, 2015 14:09:17 GMT 1, Richter and Money and Me.... In the late 80s and early 90s I was selling my paintings in a gallery in LA, and they owed me $800 for something they had sold. The director offered me instead something they already had in stock: a Richter painted LP (Goldberg Variations), from an edition, but each hand-painted. Classic Richter creamy, dragged style.
I can still see it, in my hand in a bespoke frame, a circular mat inside square wood frame.
All I had to do was sign off on the receipt and walk out the door to my place. I think about that sometimes when I have to go do some work I'd rather not do just to get the cash.
Reading this article was also one of those times.
Still, love and respect Richter as an artist. Thanks for sharing.
Think I need a drink.

If you would have taken the richter, inresting to think about wonder how long you would have kept it though as it increased? You've been collecting a long time mate, must have built up a nice collection over the years

I feel you. I think all of us that have collected for a period of time have had those moments. Mine involves Cy Twombly. Mistakes forever etched in my brain.

May we all make up for these misses somewhere along the way, from here on!

You've been collecting a long time mate, must have built up a nice collection over the years Knowing me and my life since that time, there are MANY instances along the way where I would have tried to fence that Richter.
Tragically, I would say I first started to collect young, in high school, living at home saving money from working in restaurants. Then went through a long spell of living in The Real World with no disposable income for art. But worked as an artist and in galleries, conservation studio, so was always around it, tried to get a bit here and there.
I would say Banksy got me back into wanting to buy art, have it around me and in my life again.

we need more of this to kill the speculators in the face

I doubt their terms are enforcable anyway.
They are looking like art has become religion to these people.
