The Urban Art Buyers Club., by miguel on Mar 23, 2015 2:24:32 GMT 1, Hi all,
I have had this idea going round for a few years and thought I would start it and see the response.
I am looking to start a buyers club, I am looking for people to invest ยฃ100 each and with all the proceeds going to buy a piece by a choosen artist.
Next the work will be framed and each collective member gets to have the piece of art for six months and then passes it on to the next member.
Of course there will be cynics, this is a scam all that type of stuff, but its not!!
I am looking for ten members to initally start off with to keep admin at a managable level.
After five years the piece is sold hopefully at a profit or the group decide to keep it for another five years also the share of the pic can be sold to another member within the group.
Contracts will be signed to show ownership.
There are a number of issues and problems and tweeks but on the whole I think it can work.
Please PM if interested.
Thanks

The Urban Art Buyers Club., by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Mar 23, 2015 8:18:18 GMT 1, It's getting popular I have heard of a few schemes here in Austrlia. Good article below 'club together'
m.smh.com.au/money/investing/discover-smart-ways-to-buy-art-20141110-11hfka.html
Our friend is trying to get us (my wife and I) to with 5 other couples to access pensions and buy property in a joint venture.I said no..Too much risk for me!! But any shared scheme would need a good contract and agreed rules etc.. Anything to do with money usually ends in arguments..

I could see it working better if you purchased 10 pieces and then moved them round people, using it to spread the risk as you would own a 10th of 10 pieces by different artists rather than have it all invested in one artist
Not one for me anyway

If you want to "invest" a small ticket in a piece of "art" that won't be on your walls, you already can (check out my-art-invest or something like that. No need to limit to 10 friends, and the contracts are rock solid.
If you want to enjoy the pieces, pooling 10 friends to buy 10 pieces makes more sense. Everyone has something on the wall, and financially you have spread the risk of your "investment" across more than 1 artist.

The Urban Art Buyers Club., by Deleted on Mar 23, 2015 11:00:43 GMT 1, this is more likely to end up going to shit and everyone hating each other, than being a money making/ arty success
I mean, who would want to be forced to display whatson or dotdotdot on their walls in the name of investment ?

The Urban Art Buyers Club., by miguel on Mar 23, 2015 11:48:22 GMT 1, Thanks for all the response.. In long run the plan would be to buy ten pieces of art so each year you will have two new pieces on the walls.
I use the word invest loosely, its not about the monetary value.
Yes there will be pieces some do not like we'll you can pass it on to the next member if you don't want to hang it up for your six months.
The hating people shouldn't occur its a simple model you have the painting hang it up for six months then pass it on. People like to be trusted.

I'm out as they say. coller is the "man" who may be able to give you some guidance on getting this grand scheme off the ground. He may be able to help with the questionnaires you are going to need. I was too late to join his print commission club but enjoyed reading about it it looks like this one could run ....good luck to you

The Urban Art Buyers Club., by Deleted on Mar 23, 2015 13:02:14 GMT 1, I cannot see this type of scheme working very well. Unless the hundred quids from each investor comes to a good amount of money which enables buying a work of art by an artist whose prices will rise dramatically.
To be able to do that one needs to be on the Inside in the art world.
Or It's better for the hundred quids to support a new artist and help the artist with promotion and exhibitions.
That might not work as well because usually backers etc end up telling the artist what to paint etc.
So it usually ends up not working.
Unless of course the artist is so bad that all they can do is scribble.

Better to just buy Art that you can afford. You can get some really nice pieces well below 100

The Urban Art Buyers Club., by dazarino on Mar 23, 2015 19:33:55 GMT 1, Would only work if the art work was shown at a neutral, accessible venue full time. This really doesn't have legs I'm afraid to say.
Keep thinking though matey, might lead to something that will work. Your plans right now? I do get the reasons behind it but please don't try this.

The Urban Art Buyers Club., by Deleted on Mar 23, 2015 23:56:28 GMT 1, I think the optimal buyer's club size is one. You buy a piece to put on your wall and when you're tired of it, you sell it and buy something else that tickles your fancy.
This system is beautiful because every piece that this club traffics in will fit your tastes perfectly, you have complete flexibility regarding how long a piece stays on your wall, and you don't have to worry about any other parties losing or damaging the art or dropping off the face of the earth completely.
I think coordinating the purchase, sale, and rotation of art is simply more trouble than it's worth.
