Things to see/do in Detroit?, by stillborncrisps on Mar 23, 2015 14:56:14 GMT 1, Am planning a trip to Detroit, got a few questions.
Are there any Detroit residents on the forum? Which areas are safe / definate no-go areas?
The tourist guides all seem *very* touristy and downtown focused. I'm not really looking for a Starbucks holiday, but I would rather stay in one piece.
What are the cool 'must see' things while I'm there?
Is it as dangerous as people say?
Also wondering how many of the Banksys still survive?
Are there any districts that are particularly street art heavy?
Any advice appreciared.

Things to see/do in Detroit?, by jessecory on Mar 24, 2015 2:44:16 GMT 1, Hey it's Jesse from 1xRUN and Inner State Gallery. We're located in Eastern Market just 1km from downtown. Most neighborhoods are totally safe and crime is way down. Don't leave anything in your car as w/ most cities and your windows will stay intact.
Eastern Market is a great neighborhood and if you let us know when you're here we can give you a quick tour and show you around.
The Heidelberg Project is a must see and a 5 min car ride from downtown. Tyree Guyton has created a multi block public art insulation on found objects and his art.
The Dia is epic and the Henery Ford museum is great as well but it's a bit outside the city.
Midtown us cool and have some shops and food. You could do a bit of research on that neighborhood as they have a good web presence.
Berts and bakers keyboard lounge and good spots for Jazz and soul food.
Old Miami and Bronx and good bars to start off at.
There are quite a few murals on Grand River, eastern market and the Z car park has epic murals by Revok, Saner, Dabs Myla etc. Sunday's are best as there's no cars in the lot.
There's prob tons more so pm me for my direct email.
Good luck and enjoy the city.

Things to see/do in Detroit?, by visualverite on Mar 24, 2015 5:23:39 GMT 1, 323east is very in-tune with what is happening, they would be an awesome resource.
When are you coming into town? Depending on when, more things are happening as the weather gets warmer. Movement is Memorial Day weekend and there is usually something happening on the weekends throughout the summer.
Use common sense and be as street smart as you would be in any other big city. Don't leave valuables in view if you leave them in your car. Stay on the main roads and there is no need to take walks at 4am in unfamiliar areas.
Along with DIA in the city, there is also MOCAD and the Grand River Creative Corridore. Outside the city we have the Cranbrook Art Museum.
I think 555 gallery has the last Banksy. The others were removed wight heir whereabouts not publicly known or they were washed away.
What are your interests and how adventurous are you?

Things to see/do in Detroit?, by stillborncrisps on Mar 24, 2015 20:17:58 GMT 1, Hey guys, thanks for all the info, will have a plough through it all tonight.
I'm visiting in early May, so fingers crossed the weather will be a bit warmer by then?!? But I guess I'm a bit early for memorial day.
I've been watching a few youtube items about Detroit today, and yes, it does seem the hearsay about crime is a bit OTT. It's so difficult to know till you been to a city though, so thanks for the heads up.
I'd already spotted the Heidelberg Project a few years ago, in fact I think I started a thread on here about it, so got that one firmly in my sights as a visit.
Looking forward to checking out the Dabs Myla stuff, I love those guys. Is there any Obey stuff about - I thought he'd be all over somewhere that has such a music history?
I'm sure you guys get sick of peeps wanting to explore the abandonned buildings, but I'd like to if I could. As far as risk goes, I don't mind wading through s**t, etc, but I am a bit over the hill to be running away from police & theives.
I'd be keen to visit any musical legacy that's left too. I know there's the Motown place, but I'd be keen to see anything to do with The Stooges, eg places they played or lived. Is that stuff even known/documented?! Or any of the clubs from when Techno started (I imagine they're closed down now, but if the building's still standing, that's enough). I see Eminem's old house got pulled down recently, it'd still be cool to drive down his street, if I get the chance.

Things to see/do in Detroit?, by visualverite on Mar 25, 2015 4:25:42 GMT 1, wompa164, have you even made an attempt to visit Detroit or research the transformation that is happening before making flippant comments about the city?
I would gladly show you a city on the rise and all that it has to offer if you give it a chance & visit.
