New Member, by bdub on Mar 25, 2015 0:27:39 GMT 1, Hi there everyone,
I am new to the forum and just wanted to formally introduce myself and say hi. I have watched from afar for awhile now and have finally found the time to start participating =)
I don't have anything for sale and would not dream of making my first post on this forum a "For Sale" thread We can save that for a much later date. In fact, I am more interested in purchasing than selling at the moment. Some artists I like are Miss Bugs, Invader, Fairey, Banksy, Bast, Choe, D*Face, Dran, Faile etc
That being said, I was hoping maybe we could get a discussion going about one of my favorite pieces I have in my collection...I have a 1 of 3 canvas by Roamcouch titled "Painter Princess". It is the orange Hermes one. Just to clarify, this is NOT FOR SALE....my lady would literally kill me...not kidding lol
I found this link with a picture of the piece...I tried to include the picture directly in the post but could not find the instructions on how to do so...a pm from a kind forum member would be greatly appreciated for future reference
www.streetartnews.net/2011/07/roamcouch-princess-new-originals.html
I was interested in knowing what other people thought of this piece or Roamcouch in general? Roamcouch doesn't seem to get a lot of love around here which kind of surprises me because I find his stencil work to be incredibly detailed. The end result of most of his stuff I personally find just meh, but the process....now that is fun to watch!

... there is a thread about posting pictures ... getting a bit late now and I need to get off to bed ... so if someone else finds it ... that's good

New Member, by letiss on Mar 25, 2015 0:40:11 GMT 1, Welcome onboard. As you'll see we've been far to busy to discuss this art stuff. Instead it's all about the finer points of moderation and other hugely pressing Internet message board type things.
Roamcouch seems to have some skills but doesn't really say much to me. But I think he's a young guy, so good on him for putting his releases out. I agree that the end result though can be rather bland, at least for my tastes.

New Member, by bdub on Mar 25, 2015 0:57:33 GMT 1, Thanks .dappy I was able to find the thread about posting pics so I will do that for my next thread. I also agree with you, the list I stated earlier is what makes up most of my collection and what I like the most. However, those artists are always discussed so I wanted to switch it up and get some discussion going about some other artists...
...but...
as letiss just stated, everyone is a little preoccupied at the moment with their 'drama'. I won't be involving myself in any of that so if anyone is ever in the mood to actually discuss art then let me know

New Member, by bejwee77 on Mar 25, 2015 5:16:26 GMT 1, Welcome! I'm relatively new myself, and am also into Roamcouch's work...I've got Revolution on the wall, and I have matching APs When You Wish Upon a Star London and Paris at the framer - wife approved. Had never seen the Painter Princess...I like that as well.
Though I've been a long-time Banksy fan (which unfortunately didn't include the foresight of buying every print I could get my hands on), I really only got into urban/street art this year. To that point I'd mostly only managed to pick up random pieces of art on vacation.
Since then it's been a head-first dive and quite a learning curve. Seems like every day I stumble on an artist or piece that goes on the wish list.
Definitely can learn a lot on here, not least of which is that there are dozens of people who think your tastes are sh!t. But that's not a bad lesson - you buy what you love, regardless of price, value, artist, whatever. I have a virtual soup of works already and no regrets. (Well, maybe a couple of those Banksy BDs... =)

Catman 74 agreed, I think he has the potential to put out some really extraordinary pieces. It will be interesting to see how he develops his style in the future
Jeezuz Jones Snr if dan pays in signed banksy prints I think I will be able to stay away from the beers for awhile
Dibbs 45 thanks!

That London calling is awful but the skills are without question. I have a Brooklyn Bridge, which I really like but isn't without it's niggles theme wise, I really like emotional rain but would prefer without the girl in the middle of the picture. He hasn't quite nailed the perfect image for me yet but I'm excited for when he does!

New Member, by bejwee77 on Mar 25, 2015 16:04:22 GMT 1, So many are quick to trash art on here, even when in Roamcouch's case everyone concedes he's actually a great (stencil) artist. I'd be interested to hear thoughts on what makes an artist good, even if their work doesn't do anything for you.
People talk about theme being too safe, etc, but I might say the same about artists like Eine (letters aren't too safe?) - who I think is a fine artist - or many others.
And I know some artists get railed for not branching out (Whatson), or commercialism (MBW), while others do similar things but still have a cult following on here.
Is there really something subjective, or do people just go over the top when trying to say an artist doesn't appeal to them?

New Member, by bejwee77 on Mar 25, 2015 16:33:33 GMT 1, You may have been diplomatic about it, but you see things like 'London Calling is awful' in every other thread. Though I don't generally get the "weak theme" suggestion either. Lots of artists/art seem to get a pass on such things. Just interested in how people judge it. There are certainly more qualified people than me on the technical and those things.

New Member, by bejwee77 on Mar 25, 2015 18:29:44 GMT 1, It is diplomacy. It's the difference between saying that you wouldn't buy something, and saying that a piece of art is sh!t. I'm sure much of it is the usual anonymous-internet-hide-behind-the-keyboard stuff, but with artists and collectors on here who presumably have truly valuable opinions, it makes a mess of it.

New Member, by bdub on Mar 25, 2015 18:44:21 GMT 1, Thank you everyone for the warm welcomes =)
I believe art to be completely subjective and I never try to rule out an artist just because I do not like some of their work. Hell, there are even some Banksy pieces that don't do anything for me. Sadly though, I feel that a lot of people's opinions about art tend to become skewed when they hear other's opinions on the same piece/artist. I know there is some psychology term I am missing here...
In regards to Roamcouch, his end result does not do much for me, but that is just my opinion and does not mean he is not a great artist in his own right. I think he is incredibly talented but does that mean I have to like his work? No. Although I do like Painter Princess, hence why I own it =)
I could not tell you what characteristics make a great artist vs a bad artist...all I can tell anyone is what I think of the artist or work, and at the end of the day, that is still just my own opinion. That is the beautiful thing about art...it touches each and every person in a different way.

New Member, by nicobot on Mar 25, 2015 19:21:22 GMT 1, I am agreement with whoever stated that Roamcouch's subject matter is too safe. I find his artwork to be pretty boring. I can't pinpoint what exactly about it makes me feel that way. But I think it has to do with the combination of tones that are used and the subject matter that is conveyed.
Roamcouch's pieces always feel forced to me, and it's probably because I do not appreciate the message of the pieces. The subject matter comes off as trite and uninspired. With that said, it's obvious that Roamcouch has talent and is skilled in his respective art.
