Print needing flattened? Guidance pls, by Swiss Alan on Apr 9, 2015 21:39:37 GMT 1, Hi all
A friend of mine took a print to be framed today, and was informed that it cannot be mounted in the correct way (floating flat) as it has been rolled up (it was sent in a tube). The framer said that this changes the grain in the paper and for an archive print its a problem. He was recommended to take it to a paper specialist now, who would charge £110 plus vat to return it to its original flat condition by steaming and pressing.
I've bought loads of prints which are sent via a tube and I've flattened them myself and never had any problems. Has anyone come across this as I've never even heard of the grain in the paper changing? I did wonder whether the framer and 'restorer' may be in cahoots...

Print needing flattened? Guidance pls, by Ruggs on Apr 9, 2015 21:45:46 GMT 1, If I went into a framer and he said that there'd only be one way I'd be heading.

Print needing flattened? Guidance pls, by Spenie on Apr 9, 2015 21:53:54 GMT 1, Never heard of that before :)I usually let the prints rest for a while without any weights etc forcing it down, then after a few days cover with acid free paper and a few heavy books. Had no issues and i've had prints float mounted. As Ruggs says i'd be giving them a wide birth and heading somewhere else.

Print needing flattened? Guidance pls, by Deleted on Apr 9, 2015 23:55:49 GMT 1, So the framer gives you correct advice to do with that perticular print/paper and you dont like it so all say take it somewhere else....thats weird. Would you prefer if he just framed it even though he knows it wont sit flat?
Some prints/paper just cant be floated.
Maybe he should have advised you to flatten it first and bring it back when flat (thats what I would do).

Framer is right to not frame as it would cause a ripple effect being float mounted but letting the rolled print breathe to eventually weighting down I would think the correct way to relax the fibres of the print....s
