Inspirations, Origins and Originators in Art , by Black Apple Art on Apr 13, 2015 17:54:47 GMT 1, I know the we often talk about how many times new images and or ideas look very similar to pieces done by other artists previously. Sometimes an homage to another artist or a different take on an idea and others maybe a bit too similar and a bit too soon. All up for discussion of course so I thought I'd open this thread to discuss these many instances.
I will kick it off with a similarity that was actually brought to my attention by another member recently. The artist is Per Kleiva, a Norwegian artist born in 1933. Bellow is his work called "American Butterflies" which was done in 1971. I found the title and image great and we can see obvious similarities to work done 35+ years later.

Inspirations, Origins and Originators in Art , by Deleted on Apr 15, 2015 0:10:52 GMT 1, More for ideas and presentation on streets, but a lot of people seem influenced by Jenny Holzer I googled Jenny Holzer as she is a new one to me. Not having the privelige of any art school training. She is certainly philosophical and today would be called urban philosophical.
I can see how she would be influential to many artists.

Great image and by an intelligent artist.
It's certainly iconic and artists have tried to do their own version or slant on artists that came before them paintings and styles.
Was "American Butterflies" a statement on the Vietnam war?
Unfortunately today we still have the western war machine and in another part of the world so nothing wrong with re imaging the war machine for todays youth.

Yes the American butterflies piece was a protest against vietnam , Kleiva was part of the left radical artist movement in the 60-70s. Love this image but has become so expensive i can't afford it, my favourite Norwegian artist, he has made some great pieces like this one called "page from the diary of imperialism" a triptych
