smeared signature, by behaviorist on May 11, 2015 0:31:57 GMT 1, Interested in this forum's collective wisdom on the following:
How much does the strict appearance of an artist's signature affect the value of a print? I ask because I received a print, direct from the gallery, and noticed that the artist's signature, in pencil, is a tiny bit smudged. Not an aesthetic issue whatsoever, but wondered about issues down the line. After all, it's in thick pencil, and pencil can, well, smear a bit...

smeared signature, by samfrost on May 11, 2015 1:07:10 GMT 1, To me it adds a bit of character to the print. I don't necessarily view it as a negative. Others down the road might question whether someone else smudged it later. It's art...things happen in the studio.

I do think it has a negative impact on future sales though. People want prints to be absolutely pristine and a smudged signature could be from your bad handling. I know which i'd pick if I had a choice.

smeared signature, by virus on May 11, 2015 17:06:09 GMT 1, My 'Tears' print by Sandra Chevrier has a smeared signature, got i directly from COA on release. Didn't really like that, but I am pretty sure it is Sandra that smeared the signature
I don't know how usual it is these things happen?

smeared signature, by Howard Johnson on May 11, 2015 17:14:28 GMT 1, If you purchased the print from a gallery and assuming you paid the normal gallery markup I'd consider asking for a discount if it was not disclosed. Paying a premium from a gallery carries the assurance of a pristine piece, and you should hold them to such expectations if it was listed as "mint". That being said, if they cut you a nice deal I wouldn't mention it as it won't likely hurt the future value if its a popular artist.
