Ian Francis | The Chosen Form of Your Destroyer | Lazarides , by LAZARIDES on Jun 25, 2015 19:16:17 GMT 1,
Lazarides Rathbone is pleased to announce a major exhibition of multifaceted paintings by British artist Ian Francis.
The Chosen Form of Your Destroyer is focused on a new series of mixed media works depicting the coexistence of beauty and destruction in modern society. The Bristol-based artist celebrates his third full-scale solo exhibition at Rathbone Place this year, once again transporting his viewers into other-worldly realms, littered with subconscious realities and blurred boundaries synonymous with his work to date.
The artist's cross-disciplinary approach weaves intricate layers of both painting and drawing to create distinctly ultra-modern works, providing a powerful dialogue between contemporary techniques and dystopian cinematic content. Francis utilises a high-contrast mixture of oil, ink, acrylic, graphite and charcoal to construct works that are both dramatically appealing and visually striking, whilst alluding to underlying notes of melancholy, alienation and social critique. The new series of paintings continue to examine reoccurring themes of constructed worlds, virtual relationships and shifting dimensions that underpin Francis' wider practice.
The Chosen Form of Your Destroyer will present a combination of figurative monochromatic paintings alongside larger compositions depicting fantastical narratives spiralling just out of our reach. Francis is fascinated with the moment of quiet fragility ahead of a majestic destruction, referencing the lack of individual choice and identity amid a much larger, uncontrollable force. Abstraction and figuration mutually support the artist's suggestion of a world view where violence and style intersect, balancing a careful mix of intimate moments and all-encompassing narratives. The forthcoming exhibition revisits Francis' interest in sensationalist media and human interaction within an ever-evolving contemporary landscape, capturing still-frames charged with conflict, passion and mystery.
The exhibition is open to the public from Wednesday 8th of July 2015 to Saturday 1st of August 2015 at Lazarides Rathbone, 11 Rathbone Place, London.

No worries. The prints at Laz look good value. The choice print years ago was "Deathstar".

I know Liner introduced a lot of new artists when he changed gallery spaces, and I haven't seen a Francis show for at least a couple years, so I assumed he was out of the rotation.

He may be out of the rotation, but last time I was in the gallery, Josh still had a number of pieces from the last show. Good luck w your search....absolutely love Ian's work!

Ian Francis | The Chosen Form of Your Destroyer | Lazarides , by monsoonking on Jun 28, 2015 14:46:06 GMT 1, Right. The operative question is whether he's still actively represented. The answer seems to be no, works in storage aside.

Ian Francis | The Chosen Form of Your Destroyer | Lazarides , by Cardiff on Jul 12, 2015 14:52:32 GMT 1, Anyone check this show out in person? I wasn't over the moon about the majority of the imagery/subjects (although I loved Forest Fire Seen From Below). I also thought all three of the charcoal pieces were brilliant as well as one of the small pieces on panel that wasn't on the preview. I'd love to see pics on the wall and hear people's opinion if anyone was there.
Cheers!

Ian Francis | The Chosen Form of Your Destroyer | Lazarides , by The Jokers Puppet on Jul 12, 2015 18:36:31 GMT 1, Interesting Cardiff, you basically summed up my view on seeing the pieces in the flesh. The charcoal pieces are excellent. They have some ink finishing as well and basically are so clean they look like prints. The palette of forest fire from below and the perspective work really well. I think Ian Francis is 80/90% of the way to making some truly exceptional work. That's not to say he has not done some great work already, I am a fan and have own a couple of canvases but I feel he could be as successful as any of the Lazarides stable. His draughtsmanship is excellent.
