Artist Maya Hayuk claims Starbucks knocked off her art, by cmodart on Jun 27, 2015 4:30:00 GMT 1, the irony is thick Black Apple Art and dreadnatty
I'm not saying she's ripping off tinguely, lewitt or frankenthaler; but when you start making frivolous claims for money, you open yourself up for the same. I literally just went to the cooper cole page and these works screamed at me...

It's a wide variety of things... not least sad.
If folks here are ... not ... Hyping up an artist then saying ptm and said artist's prices are too high .. It's some law suit... In the us ...
She is an artist who has an attitude ( show me an artist without one) , anything wrong with an attitude ? You want her to roll over and accept something which is at best questionable and at worst.. Blatant plagiarism ... In any line of work it is not generally tolerated... Here ? well street artists they just roll over..
Do we actually have people here defending Starbucks ? Class ...

Artist Maya Hayuk claims Starbucks knocked off her art, by soupy on Jun 27, 2015 13:16:10 GMT 1, after reading the article.... it appears as though it stems from the fact that they contacted her to work on a campaign. gives a little more credence to the complaint.... but i dunno...
Hayuk, of Greenpoint, says in her suit that Starbucksโ ad agency first reached out to her in October. โWe love your work,โ the ad agency, 72andSunny in California, emailed her. Hayuk, whoโs done work for Billabong, Microsoft, Sony, General Motors and Reebok, among others, after eight days of discussions turned the project down โ saying she was too busy.

Artist Maya Hayuk claims Starbucks knocked off her art, by Dr Plip on Jun 27, 2015 13:41:38 GMT 1, Well Maya Hayuk was considering working with Starbucks at the very least, but according to the article, she eventually turned it down as she was too busy. It'd be interesting to know just how far initial negotiations went and whether she sent any designs over, or how much she would have asked for the work.
I wonder which graphic design agency or artist (Haya Mayuk?) knocked up the designs that they eventually went with.
I think if your thing is colourful stripes or dots, then you can't really stop people from using knock-off versions of your work. As irritating as it is. They clearly had Maya's work in mind though, so to then produce similar work, is a tad iffy. But then Maya isn't the only artist to do colourful stripes. Then again, in this game, it doesn't really matter who did it first, just who's most well known for doing it.
But anyway, f**k Starbucks.

Artist Maya Hayuk claims Starbucks knocked off her art, by Dr Plip on Jun 27, 2015 13:49:47 GMT 1, Anyway, I'd understand turning down the job because you don't want to help advertise the shit-baskets that are Starbucks, but "too busy"??
I've seen some of her sketches.
Too busy?
Really?
For cash?

My point is obvious. I am saying her work is equally similar to other artists, as Starbucks design is to hers. Hence the irony of her suing someone for stealing her artwork. Period.

Your point is idiotic, your equating Starbucks with the history of art. Starbucks asked her if she was interested, no doubt along the lines of "the money is minimal but the exposure will be good for you". She said no, they used an in-house designer to rip her off. Instead of rolling over, she sued the fuckers (not someone) Good for her.

You're either with her or against her , stand up you starbuckers....
Me , I'll have a cup of char... Feck that coffee sh1t ....
Meanwhile her case is pretty clear... The finished work is a derivative knocked up in house .. With the term ...
...give us something like this...it doesn't take much to get email records.. In this day and age it's a pretty clear case... For .. Those who think she'll lose....

Because Maya didn't ask first and offer to pay? I am not equating starbucks with shit, and i don't care.
I'm simply pointing out the irony of her lawsuit. Life isn't binary. If it were Martin Watson, there would be a 50 page thread dragging him thru the mud by now, but since it's the flippers sweetheart, here come the defenders, as if she doesn't have a legal team already working on it...

Your point being ? Artists are influenced by art, they live with it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Maya isn't "knocking off"s**t from anyone. Certainly not Sol LeWitt !, that's just laughable.
Anyway, Dave Hickey just posted this on FB, unrelated but fitting.
"I have a new question to ask yourself while you're looking at your art. Most artist ask Is it good? Is it new. All works of art are singular and therefore new. If you think it's new, it probably an inadvertent forgery. I once wrote a song I thought was great. It was, except the tune was borrowed from Tom Waits' "Ol' 55". So the best question to ask is "Is it fresh." Fresh means it may have been fresh before, but it's fresh again in this moment. The sources of the fresh reside in the past, twisted and misunderstood"
In addition.. Jim Jarmusch, sound advice for all artists. (not corporations)
โNothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And donโt bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: โItโs not where you take things from - itโs where you take them to."
Keep it fresh !

Absolutely ridiculous to me.

Even looking at it now, it's a stretch. The background behind the cup, perhaps. But certainly not that triangle on the cup.

Artist Maya Hayuk claims Starbucks knocked off her art, by coller on Jun 27, 2015 22:52:05 GMT 1, Funny to see supposed fans of an artform with its roots in activism siding with a f**king corporation like Starbucks. Laughable. Suing Starbucks is the farthest thing from activism. All parties are laughable here.
I've also been having Maya Hayuk art put in front of my eyeballs for the past half year, and go to Starbucks 3-4x a week (don't) and the relationship between the mini-Frappucino art - which has been up for about two months - and Hayuk's work never crossed my mind once. This seems hilarious to me; essentially suing someone on the claim that you discovered how to draw intersecting lines of different colors at a particular angle.
Makes the Blurred Lines case look like this week in SCOTUS (which has been kickass).

Artist Maya Hayuk claims Starbucks knocked off her art, by coller on Jun 27, 2015 22:59:18 GMT 1, I'm guessing Hayuk will next file suit against two runners in an NYC Pride Run advert who inadvertantly wave their flags in discordant directions and create a pattern of overlapping rainbows.
Or issue a claim against Richard Prince for using portions of the light spectrum without her permission.
