Welcome to St. Pauli !, by mace on Jul 7, 2015 12:44:31 GMT 1, Hello,
As you might have noticed, we are a new (for now online) gallery from Hamburg-St. Pauli. We are strongly connected to the local street and urban art scene, so most of our releases are from artists living and working in St. Pauli. Some members on here recommended that we should give more background information on our artists. So I thought it might be a good idea to tell you a little bit about the unique spirit of St. Pauli and the local art scene. If you have been to St. Pauli yourself, you are very welcome to share your own experiences !
Here are the Top 3 highlights that you should know about St. Pauli: (1) Reeperbahn, (2) FC St. Pauli and (3) local art scene.
(1) Reeperbahn
St. Pauli is located right next to the harbour of Hamburg. In former times seamen while on land went to Reeperbahn, the central street of St. Pauli, for their amusement. It is still a buzzing place full of music venues, brothels and night clubs. The Beatles came here 50 years ago and played their first gigs at the infamous Indra club. You can still go to the hairdresser who invented the mushroom haircut for the Fab Four.

(2) FC St. Pauli
FC St. Pauli is far more than just the local football club. Currently playing in the 2. Bundesliga the club is worldwide famous for its unique fans and social commitment. The fans are explicitly anti-fascist, anti-homophobic, anti-everything that contradicts to enjoying a good football game together no matter who you are or where you're from, even if you are supporting the visiting team. The club supports local street and urban art, hosting a big street art gallery below the stands. The spirit of the club is a huge inspiration for the whole quarter.

(3) Local art scene
Center of St. Pauli's (and its neighbouring areas Schanze and Karoviertel) culture is Rote Flora, a former musical venue occupied by squatters in the 80s and still today an autonomous center for music and art. The street art in the area is idealistic, diverse, critical, rough and tolerant. Street artists are organized in loose groups who are supporting each other. Street art is appreciated and often actively supported by locals.

Hope I was able to give you an idea of what St. Pauli is all about. You are very welcome to share your own experiences ! In the next couple of days I will tell you a little bit about the most relevant artists of the area and our gallery.
