Auction house or eBay?, by Karl Read on Sept 30, 2015 12:46:36 GMT 1, Hi All,
I have a piece I'm considering parting with to part fund a project. Im unsure on the exact value now to be honest. Im guessing anywhere between ยฃ3K to ยฃ5K. Something of this ballpark value, what do you think is a better route? Submit to an auction house or chuck it on eBay at 99p and hope for the best?

Auction house or eBay?, by jusdeep on Sept 30, 2015 13:00:09 GMT 1, I would offer it on here - obviously depending what it is. If it's quality, it'll get sold quickly, avoid auction fees and possibly a long wait to get entered into the right auction catalogue. And if it's by a few artists avoid resale tax.

Auction house or eBay?, by Ponyboy Curtis on Sept 30, 2015 14:52:38 GMT 1, test the waters here and then make a decision. Auction house is great if you don't want to get involved in the process but can be expensive for you. eBay brings out some true collectors but an abundance of bellends. Really depends on what it is and your expectations tbh! Good luck.

Auction house or eBay?, by The Silence on Sept 30, 2015 22:14:50 GMT 1, I sold an unsigned Golf Sale at auction fairly recently. The reserve was set low because they assured me there would be interest.
I ended up after all fees getting less than ยฃ2k. When I'm pretty sure I could have got a little more on here. Auctions can sometimes be good but have a look at what you'd actually get and be careful to set the reserve. eBay has other things to be careful with. I'd say if it's anything covered by this forum that would be a better option. At least that was my take away from that sale.

Auction house or eBay?, by Karl Read on Oct 1, 2015 8:55:01 GMT 1, Thanks all for your suggestions. Sounds like the auction house route could be a bit of a hassle. It's a Shepard Fairey on Metal. I received a fair offer on e-beans for it but it seems maybe i could get more for it. The guys was pretty cool, even suggested i could get more. Maybe i will put it up on here and eBay. Thanks All.

Auction house or eBay?, by anodyne13 on Oct 1, 2015 19:39:16 GMT 1, Auction house will have a 35-40% spread between what the buyer pays and what you receive. The smaller the dollar amount the closer you will be to the upper end of that.

Auction house or eBay?, by The Silence on Oct 2, 2015 1:18:26 GMT 1, Mine sold mine through large auction house in London. They deduct a commission (or selling fee) from the "hammer price". This was around 12%. Then also add on 25% (up to ยฃ50k, 20% up to ยฃ1m etc) for the buyer as a "buyers premium" to the sale price. The promise of bidding wars is exciting but rarely materialise. Quite fun but I think I've learnt my lesson. Ha.

Auction house or eBay?, by mike3489 on Oct 2, 2015 6:36:05 GMT 1, Just saw a Fairy screen print on metal at a show in NYC, was a great piece, and not overwhelmingly large. For eBay, remember you can set a minimum to be sure you don't get hosed.

Auction house or eBay?, by russkov on Oct 2, 2015 6:42:05 GMT 1, Just sold my HPM of Fairey via an auction house... Happy with the result, but surely next time I'll propose it on this very forum first, as indeed as a seller I would have optimized the gain, and the purchaser would have reduced the end price... However, metals from fairey, even if this is on my point of view better than silkscreen on wood (matter of taste), do not expect to skyrocket the price if it's not iconic.
