Starting my collection, by quayesy on Sept 30, 2015 17:58:35 GMT 1, Hi all,
Long time reader, first time poster.
I've recently kicked off my own collection and was hoping for some pointers on where to best to look for more.
I follow and am on mailing lists for quite a few of the common names on the forum I.e. Dolk, Martin Whatson, Beejoir, Kunstrasen, Mau Mau and some of the sellers like Graffiti Prints.
Appreciate it's a broad question and there is lots to learn from these pages but are the any recommendations on sites to visit for upcoming releases any of the more up and coming artists etc?
Thanks for any advice!

If your new to collecting too easy to follow the hype that surrounds a few artists and get drawn in
Follow what you like and would display rather than the must have hype creates as it gets expensive chasing a missed release on the secondary market.;-) Doesn't apply to all artists here as you can see who has a solid base and good work . Also depends on budget and if your looking at a investment point of view
All the best , it's a fun hobby But gets expensive!

dolk...the old prints - they are iconic - the new prints are not so "wall friendly" - in my opinion.

Advice.......Yup......Quick....Get out now while you can! I started collecting about 18 months ago and prior to that had never bought a poster for more than about ยฃ20. Since then my walls have filled up with expensive prints and expensive frames, I've had to buy portfolios and acid free sleeves to store impulse buys in, my dining room and spare bedrooms have artwork unfurling and flattening in them and I spend too long on here!! Unfortunately the arm and the leg that I have left after it costing me my others still means I can press an 'add to cart' button and hop to the door to greet the postman who incidentally has now cancelled his gym membership due to the amount of heavily varnished prints he has to deliver to my house! If you don't want to heed the warning then best to stick around on here, investigate deeper into artists you like by reading some of the old threads, browse some of the artists websites and social media pages that you will no doubt uncover and you will soon be as addicted as the rest of us!

Starting my collection, by loother on Sept 30, 2015 19:02:39 GMT 1, I've also been around for 18 months or so. My main tip: there's lots of great artists doing great stuff. If you miss out on a print you wanted, don't overspend to get it on the secondary market (which I did once or twice) - just chalk it up to experience and wait for the next great thing. There are many more great prints than you've got walls*. Also, go through the latest art buy thread, from page one. It's an education in itself.
* Unless you've got absolutely loads of walls

I'm definitely failing at the be patient. Having looked at a load of releases and missed out for 6-12 months, I've hit a lucky (expensive) streak and picked up 3 pieces in the last week...
That's why I've ended up posting here, like an art addicts anonymous group, for some tips before I end up broke.

Try to set a yearly art budget and try to stick to it. Avoid hyped artists (a lot getting hyped on here recently by members and galleries). Don't buy solely because you think it will appreciate but buy what you truly appreciate (subject matter, style, technique, etc) oh and like others said, be patient. If i dwelled on all the releases i missed i would be miserable. .

That way you will enjoy looking at your pieces every time you walk past. My first piece I brought (and first piece I produced) was from where we got married, my second from a great time at dismaland by a local artist. I now have quite a few pieces and every one of them is framed and on my walls

Try not to look at the price first as it might sway your mind one way or the other... If you like it, can afford it, then buy it....we all have different tastes. Good luck.

Thats pretty funny as I think Thats how we all start. I purchased my first print in 08" a banksy Soup can Litho then I went on a splurge and brought everything in sight. Since then I only buy what I would put on my walls and sold my whole portfolio to get a few grails, signed banksy, parla, Hirst plus others, Its and expensive game and having a quality framer adds to the expense but so worth it, I need a bigger house and more walls now.

Starting my collection, by natstan on Oct 2, 2015 4:22:24 GMT 1, We all start pretty much the same, buying stuff at 'eye level' - literally - in the beginning. It can be addictive to spend money on whatever catches your fancy and what many people hype up on here (sorry guys) as you would worry about missing out. I count myself lucky that I like - and still hang - every single piece that I have bought right from the start of this game.
Recently sold my very first urban art print - a chewbarber by eelus - to a fellow member here and thinking back, I did not even regret that purchase a bit even though I have gotten over images of that sort (and to be frank, his skills back then looks pretty raw but nevertheless has a certain vintage quality to it). I think one criteria I have for myself for buying art is to ask myself if I will ever regret buying it in the first place, like determining: is there enough space at home to hang, does the art and the artist speak to me, do i feel proud hanging the work on my walls?
Of course, we all spend loads of money on this game, so I also ask myself if the print is worth the money in the first place and whether I can at least sell it on secondary market to get my money back if not more should I tire of it (by making checks on the credentials and past works and transactions of the artist). And ultimately I also have to decide if I can make do living with the prints still if they do not sell in the future.
Instagram is one of the best platforms for getting to know the artist and his work process. I also get to find many more artists by checking links and tags made between their posts. If you are not on it, hop on!

But seriously, stop buying expensive multiples when the money can be researched and go into a 1 of a kind. In this game, its quality over quantity.

But seriously, stop buying expensive multiples when the money can be researched and go into a 1 of a kind. In this game, its quality over quantity. Great tips. Even thou I have collected art for a while im pretty new to this area and must say that the reason that i tend to fall for more prints than originals is simply the easy access. There are hardly any originals ever marketed or even priced. When browsing around you see prices on every print but always "contact for price" on the originals which is quite frustrating when new and you don't want to contact the gallery every time since you have no clue of the price range. For my other art its easy to follow auctions and such but this urban art is seldom at auctions (especially not in sweden) so its much harder to get a grip of.
Dont know why the prices of originals are so secret but when your new its quite a barrier to get over when you don't have a clue if its affordable or if its 20 000ยฃ
Any tips in both that area and for some beginner books would be highly appreciated.
Originals over prints. Buy what you love Read books Dont believe the hype Engulf yourself in an artists collection of works before buying, know who they are as much as you can Enjoy it, Its art. Buy originals if you can afford them. Get in touch with artists direct and get commissions. If you can't do that get in with the galleries that represent them.
Read and absorb everything relating to this area of art. There is a lot more to it than just some graffiti on walls.

Galleries are quite accommodating usually, just send an email asking to see the inventory of that artists work with pricing. Get on their lists for previews of shows, and youll begin to see what the range for artists are. when youre about to buy, look at any inventories you can to compare pricing, or too see how your art may or may not be appreciating.
Also be patient, if your budget is lower, then you'll be grabbing smaller works, there are amazing artists that sell significant works for $3000 and under (Kevin Peterson, probably a good pick up right now) some original drawings beginning even at $150, such as Nosego nosego.bigcartel.com/
If there are works or artists you like, and you have questions, members here are super helpful. You can PM me anytime to bounce ideas and im sure a ton of the seasoned collectors here feel the same way.

Starting my collection, by sierrahotel on Oct 2, 2015 22:19:15 GMT 1, Start small. ยฃ100 for a print, ยฃ200 plus for a small original, if you like it, you're not overpaying. Once you start looking at prints that cost ยฃ500 you want to start being careful to make sure you're not overpaying.
Nelly duff always have lots of nice new fairly priced prints. You'd struggle to re sell most of them, but you're paying to have something nice on your wall. Once you start to love an artist start paying attention to related buy and sell threads and eBay sales and you'll get a feel for fair value pretty quick.
I started with Eelus prints; proper street driven prints, still cheap as chips ( some of the older ones).
Good luck!

Thanks a lot for the tips. Ill take it slow, the taste over the first year of a genre/hobby tend to sway a lot (lesson learned in my wrist watch-hobby, buying a lot of hyped junk in the start that never got used) The budget is quite small so pieces for over $3000 would sting... but it tends to stretch over time and the deeper into a hobby you get Thanks for the warm welcome and the offer of help!

Then of course you sell and upgrade, and let the artwork change with you and your style, income, whatever.
Anyways, cheers!
