Modern art is rubbish? Mistaking artworks for trash..., by clockshovel on Oct 28, 2015 0:36:03 GMT 1, It is quite a good article despite it's brevity. Personally some of my favourite works that encompass my own walls are scribbles on scrap paper, left behind by artists in bars or 9 to 5 workstations, or framed sketches from artists unknown found in thrift shops and flea markets. The trash appeal in visual art has rendered it, for myself anyways, more approachable. I would like to think furthermore that it has become likewise to the common man to whom the visual arts seems less accessible.

Modern art is rubbish? Mistaking artworks for trash..., by monsoonking on Oct 29, 2015 21:16:34 GMT 1, I thought the conclusions of this article were off the mark.
"Because as long as someone thinks modern art is rubbish, it is still provocative. It is still dangerous." "Contemporary art may have all the hallmarks of establishment culture, but it is still Challenging, Subversive and Radical. It must be. The cleaners are still throwing it away."
The art wasn't thrown away because it was challenging and subversive, or even bad for that matter. It was thrown away because the cleaners literally thought it was rubbish.
So what's the real take-away? Essentially that context matters in art, especially conceptual art. A urinal on a gallery wall means something different than a urinal on a bathroom wall. Not as sexy a conclusion, but it probably tells you more about the nature of contemporary art.

Modern art is rubbish? Mistaking artworks for trash..., by BKBOI on Oct 30, 2015 2:07:45 GMT 1, and this is pretty much the problem with conceptual art... it only makes sense when an academe gives the impression that it is avante guarde work or when a rich art collector bids up the work to a billion dollars.

Modern art is rubbish? Mistaking artworks for trash..., by Stender on Oct 30, 2015 11:31:45 GMT 1, I went to the tate modern once and walked into a room that was totally white with a large white box in the corner and a cordless drill and drill case on top of it. People were looking at it and I couldn't work out if it was an installation or if the builder had popped to the loo.

Modern art is rubbish? Mistaking artworks for trash..., by Dr Plip on Oct 30, 2015 11:50:44 GMT 1, One day, a block of marble was installed at the end of a local street in the centre of my home town. For about 2 weeks, tourists would pose next to it and take pictures of it. It turned out to be the plinth for a statue that arrived later.
