Would you buy a Rolf Harris piece?, by Ponyboy Curtis on Nov 23, 2015 16:52:08 GMT 1, Not urban but I'm sure a few of you have tastes out side of this parameter.
Pre noncing I was always a fan of his work. Clearly a very talented artist and his London series in particular I thought was outstanding.
So...now he's banged up would you still buy and hang his work? I'm conflicted to be honest. He's hardly the first artist to have a dubious back ground either...

Would you buy a Rolf Harris piece?, by iamzero on Nov 23, 2015 17:01:19 GMT 1, I nearly bought one of his pieces a couple of years back. I'm not sure what he did is relevant if you like the art, not sure he's on par with other celebrity sex pests.

Would you buy a Rolf Harris piece?, by 11 on Nov 23, 2015 17:01:34 GMT 1, This is going to be an interesting thread.
No one is an angel and an artist having served time at her majesty's pleasure shouldn't really affect their art.....except when the sick f**ker is a convicted child molester.
This discussion started developing on the Charles Kraft thread so might be worth having a look there too as there were some relevant points raised and other artists that would fall into this bracket....

Would you buy a Rolf Harris piece?, by ABC on Nov 23, 2015 17:06:09 GMT 1, My local Gallery used to sell his works and I was very close to purchasing a few prior to the news coming out. I spoke to Gallery owner soon after and they stated that they had indeed lost a great deal of money but under no circumstance would they sell anymore of his works.
I was gutted when it all came to light. I grew up with Rolf's Cartoon club and followed his work throughout the years, he had made a good career with his art and indeed was very talented, painting the queen and all but..... Dubious background is a bloody understatement Ponyboy. Being a parent I would not/could not own any of his work regardless. Do you think the same for Jimmy Saviles case, just Dubious?

How could anyone enjoy the work, knowing the evil mind that created it. Just a filthy human being, who won't admit his crimes even though there is overwhelming evidence.

Would you buy a Rolf Harris piece?, by Tommy Tucker on Nov 23, 2015 17:17:16 GMT 1, I used to work for the galleries that represented his work and sold a number of originals and limited editions. They were truly amazing pieces of work and have to agree his London pieces were fantastic but it was his wildlife that were the show stoppers.
Having said that a lot of people have lost a lot of money. If you are thinking of buying now is the time. I agree a prison sentence shouldn't affect the art but in this case it has done dramatically.
A real shame.

Would you buy a Rolf Harris piece?, by Ponyboy Curtis on Nov 23, 2015 17:26:54 GMT 1, I don't ABC. He's a bad man and whilst not nearly as bad as Savile, clearly has issues and is rightly doing time for the lives he's ruined. As I said...I'm conflicted. Am I going to stop listening to some bands who undoubtedly took advantage of young girls? No...probably not. Would you?

Would you buy a Rolf Harris piece?, by Happy Shopper on Nov 23, 2015 17:29:03 GMT 1, I have no idea how anyone could even think about owning his work. He abused children and ruined lives. What sort of person wants to hang his work on their walls?
The comparison could possibly be with Eric Gill... but I think it's about time his work was taken out of collections, and removed from places like the BBC too.
The justification for Eric Gill is that he was also a creative genius... but Rolf Harris, not so much!!

Would you buy a Rolf Harris piece?, by Trevorm on Nov 23, 2015 17:34:34 GMT 1, Me neither.
Although during the trial I did pick up (proper cheap) one of his A4 sized promo photo's complete with doodle and hand written message "Cheers - all the best from Rolf Harris" or some such. I self framed it and put it up in my office at work, as a sort of conversation piece.
It lasted a couple of hours before the cleaner, accidently, rendered it completely mangled by managing to knock it off the shelve and then step on it. She was kind of apologetic although I suspect otherwise.

thank you, what a lovely home you have,
Why thank you,
Oh I see you collect art,
I do indeed,
Who's that one by on the wall there?
Ah That's a Rolf Harris, you remember him, the convicted kiddy fiddler.........
Oh Is that the time, I must be off.

It is a difficult one though if you own his work. Yes it is technically very good and the OG's are (as stated above) brilliant, for me art though all works come with a story and should be a topic for discussion, how do you talk about his work now?

Would you buy a Rolf Harris piece?, by Ponyboy Curtis on Nov 23, 2015 18:14:19 GMT 1, It's unacceptable but (and many a crap argument has started with a "but") John Peel for example, is still spoken about in lauded tones, when his noncyness was documented in his own autobiography! Band's in the 70's Led Zep to name but one had a number of well documented incidents. Jimmy Page I'm looking at you... Would you view someone with a Harris as scum? Or do we agree that once served his time then it's all square and everyone deserves another chance? (and everyone rushes off to buy his work cause it's cheap).

Would you buy a Rolf Harris piece?, by estelle getty fan club on Nov 23, 2015 18:21:44 GMT 1, There is no way to separate the man and his actions from his art so it has to be no. Regardless of how pretty/stimulating/pleasing the image is there is no way to disengage the two so it would be impossible for me to get any pleasure from it.
Talking of Rolf Harris I remember someone on here hugely talking him up (โtime to buy, prices are on the way upโ etc.) not long before the cases came to light obviously trying to shift the dead weight they so clearly were about to become.

Would you buy a Rolf Harris piece?, by Art Fan 2011 on Nov 23, 2015 19:04:21 GMT 1, I'm sure many people have lost a lot of money given the fact that demand for his work has dropped off a cliff since his conviction. A talented artist for sure, but I wouldn't want to own anything from him, and the "art police" would have an absolute fit if it was even suggested !!

(and everyone rushes off to buy his work cause it's cheap). The situation with a lot of 70s musicians is certainly a dicey one! Although at least Bill Wyman, Jimmy Page, etc met young girls in nightclubs, and a lot of times had long relationships with them, and even married them! Not quite hanging around the school gates or worse, around hospital wards.
I don't think jail time spent will make anyone forget Rolf's actions... just as you won't be hearing much Gary Glitter on the radio any time soon.

Would you buy a Rolf Harris piece?, by Liverpool ste123 on Nov 23, 2015 19:15:43 GMT 1, My local gallery sold a ton of his stuff too but I never got the appeal...
Just hope Todd White or Doug Hyde don't fall from grace for any reason as I've a ton of money spent on them. Sadly don't think I'll recoup what I laid out but I enjoy them nonetheless
As for Mr Harris, I'm intrigued now (as I'm sure a load of us have done already and will be flying over to eBay now to have a mooch at exactly how cheap, cheap is!), but I'm sure those posh types or those of a retirement age wouldn't hear anything untoward said of their possessions. Otherwise it'll be some buckshot in your ass for even suggesting the like!
Who was that street artist guy from the Far East who's a convicted rapist, if my mind serves me correctly? Has his work been equally as adversely effected?

He's a bad man and whilst not nearly as bad as Savile, clearly has issues and is rightly doing time for the lives he's ruined. As I said...I'm conflicted. Am I going to stop listening to some bands who undoubtedly took advantage of young girls? No...probably not. Would you? Are you fรผcking seriously saying that there are good paedo's and bad paedo's? No. They are your words. There are degrees of everything. Not everyone gets the same sentence for murder for example.

I would never buy his work but I wouldn't of before all this happened either. If you can't decide wether you should buy RH,s art or not go and ask your family and friends and see where their feelings are on the subject.
