Good guy Bad guy Leave this guy alone?, by globalplanb on Feb 18, 2016 18:01:27 GMT 1, I've been looking through some older threads, Feb 2015, and found some disappointing comments about an artist whose work I've liked and followed for some time and was wondering whether his art was now on the downward slope or this period was just not a good time for him but he's now pulled through. Anyone wish to comment and bring me up to speed with what's been happening? The artist in question was Martin Whatson is he a good guy or have the tables sadly turned.

Agree with this post, opinions of others shouldn't change whether you like an image or not. not clear if the original post was more of a query from an investor worried about sliding prices??

Martin is an allround good guy. Straight up, polite, sincere, honest and very talented. IMO.

ive posted this thread as stated above, I've read some bad press going back to 2014 slating his work and the guys at Graffiti Print. I'm like yourself I've had dealings with both MW and GP going back to 2013 and found either one great characters. Only this slating they've received was stumbled across on a routine browse to do with work by MW as I've just released a piece to a good friend stating how good this guys work is and how I expect him to do even better in the future, so I don't particularly want to be left with egg on my face if things have now gone south. Therefore,out of respect for my friends l would appreciate some open discussion this is not personal.

If you told your friend buy this piece and it will be a great investment and make you lots of money, then you might have egg on your face. But if your friend enjoys the artwork then its all good. Martin has been around for a while and most of his pieces will sell above cost on the secondary market but not by a huge amount.

I know what you're saying and normally I'd say No! Only its a much more cynical world when it comes to sales. Unfortunately when you're trying to sell a piece of art, regardless of whether you personally like it or not, which carries with it some bad or mixed press the answer is sadly yes.

I guess it depends on how much you charged your friend for it then 
He was hyped a bit (I think it's fair to say), and then people got a bit bored, and the images got worse. But that's not to say he won't come back with another popular print. He seems to be taking a break after releasing a lot quite quickly.

It's not about an investment that may go South but whether my friend will feel they have had a good deal should they read what I have. I would rather reverse the sale than make a bad one so was just looking for some reassurance

Cheers for that. I'm hearing better stuff now than what I've read. I too have always liked MW's work. So onwards and upwards

I had previously asked for a forum price check but to no avail then eventually found a gallery selling the same piece in the states so sold alittle under their price it seemed a tad high but reasonable considering the other piece was priced just for the print while mine was professionally framed with UVglass and hand delivered. Only my friend at the time was asking me about MW and I had praised him up quite a bit then I came across the slating.

I know how you feel though, I dont like selling to friends as I worry that they haven't got a good deal and and end up giving them a bargain. As long as they enjoy it, it's all good though!
