Faile - happens everyday! / Gender bias discussion..., by Forbidden Love on Mar 9, 2016 15:53:01 GMT 1, Hey
So I received a email from a colleague concerning THE RIGHT ONE/HAPPENS EVERYDAY which hangs in my office......It reads....
In the spirit of International Women's Day, I had a very interesting conversation with some of the women in (name of practice) about unconscious gender bias in our industry and in our firm.
In this I learned an interesting fact. Apparently, we have only one picture of a woman in (building name), and it's the one attached. Notice anything odd? :-
I have a few questions.
1) what do you think the right one/happens everyday image actually means? 2) what are your views on the above message? 3) do you think its inappropriate for a office
my opinion is...I want to know who decides how someone should feel from a art piece. and who decides whether its suitable for others (the viewer - who also should have a opinion). Is there a process for this? If the criteria for hanging work in a office should be that everyone likes the piece of work then nothing would ever get hung.

Faile - happens everyday! / Gender bias discussion..., by WOOF on Mar 9, 2016 15:59:43 GMT 1, Happens everyday is a reference to faile's earlier work from which this print is derived. It said, "It happens everyday." Whether or not it's work place appropriate is entirely dependent on the type of business you're in. In my industry, it would fit right in. If I were a banker, it probably would not.

Faile - happens everyday! / Gender bias discussion..., by Forbidden Love on Mar 9, 2016 16:08:41 GMT 1, I knew where the image came from, and I guess another question would be...is there a different meaning behind both images. I think I know what the image means on the full verison..but I could be wrong and less so on the cropped (the right one, happens everyday)

Faile - happens everyday! / Gender bias discussion..., by chichi carter on Mar 9, 2016 16:20:54 GMT 1, I'm guessing the problem is that even though the woman in this picture is 'braving what no man ever could' she is doing so while scantily clad. Replace the woman by a man and I'm 100% sure he wouldn't be in his undies or wearing a speedo. Maybe he'd be wearing a 'bulge revealing' spandex outfit or tattered jeans and a ripped shirt but he'd still be somewhat full clothed. Like @12 said, whether or not it is work place appropritate depends on the type of business you're in. A bit like hanging art in a kid's room; you don't want to end up with a bunch of people with their panties in a bunch, or having nightmares over it!

Faile - happens everyday! / Gender bias discussion..., by thewral on Mar 9, 2016 16:37:04 GMT 1, I'll opine on points 2 and 3.
IMHO, it doesn't matter how you feel or interpret the piece. The fact of the matter is that your colleague is clearly uncomfortable with it has raised an issue. You work (I'm assuming) in a professional setting, which is also a public setting, and that person has done you the courtesy of raising the issue directly in a non-confrontational matter as opposed to going directly to HR or management. You should take it down. Not everyone needs to like a particular piece of hung art, but you shouldn't offend anyone in a professional work setting. Hang what you want in your own private space.

Faile - happens everyday! / Gender bias discussion..., by Poly Mindset on Mar 9, 2016 17:58:19 GMT 1, Unfortunately the problem is that it only takes one person to say that they are offended by the picture. It's the same as verbal comments. For instance you may say something that seems completely innocent or even funny. However, if it is perceived by someone as offensive then you don't have a leg to stand on and you will be brought to the tribunal. I personally have gone through this more than once and I always lose. This is not because I am wrong, it is because corporations are scared to death about lawsuits and the costs they will incur. I have always personally found this disturbing because it diminishes the level of our society and curtails our work place existence to the lowered level of the cretins who don't possess the intelligence to dissect the meaning of what is being said, or in this case seen. My advice to you is to take the picture home and enjoy it everyday simply because to keep it at work is a losing proposition. If you stand up for the cause you will probably be seen as a good worker but a bad robot. I know because I am a bad robot.

Faile - happens everyday! / Gender bias discussion..., by randomname on Mar 9, 2016 19:21:05 GMT 1, This would be my response if I were you:
Thank you for bringing this up. It is a timely topic I care deeply about.
First, I should mention that the art in question was created by a team of artists by the name of Faile. When this particular image was created, that team included a female artist named Aiko Nakagawa, a.k.a. Lady Aiko.
I believe that information may provide useful context when interpreting the art. The true meaning behind a piece of art may not always be apparent at first glance.
For me, this image represents women fighting back against stereotypes, objectification and discrimination. Unfortunately, this particular version of the image has been cropped, partially obscuring that message. I've attached the original image it was based on for reference.
You can more clearly see that she's using a symbol of female identity (a high heal shoe) to fight off a monster, which happens to be a dinosaur. I interpret that dinosaur to be the antiquated ideals and constant misogyny women are subjected to on a daily basis.
The text in the original image provides further context, "Braving what no man ever could" and "It happens everyday." I admire the strength it must take to survive and thrive in a male dominated society.
I hope this clears up any concerns you may have had with my choice of art. If you have any questions or wish to discuss it further, I'm always around and love talking art.

Faile - happens everyday! / Gender bias discussion..., by stillborncrisps on Mar 9, 2016 20:37:47 GMT 1, I think a big problem is, we on here know who Faile are; that they're two lovely guys, and we know the spirit in which that image was created.
To anyone else it just looks like a skimpy bimbo with the word FAIL (as it will likely be read/interpreted) above her in huge letters.
It'd be like playing Smack My Bitch Up in the office. The Prodigy don't literally mean it, but to the unitiated how else could you casually be expected to interpret it?
If I were you I'd take the print down. And give it to me.

Faile - happens everyday! / Gender bias discussion..., by daveart on Mar 9, 2016 20:53:00 GMT 1, good topic. i hang a lot of art in an office setting. i have handled this in two ways. one. anything that seems remotely out of line i send a picture to a number of women in the office you like art and ask them if they have any issues or suggestions with a particular piece. having input from everyone has helped dissuade people from getting too bent out of shape when i say "well, this is the group of people that approved this art work. ' Secondly, i hide our HED it in the far back of the office.. in conjunction with this remote placement i have a Tender Forever in the same room- not sure exactly down to the scare cm but the female is only wearing slightly less.
i do pass on a lot of art i would probably buy but i realize it has to hang in an office.. or at my house.. and strangely enough .. the requirements for hanging at my house are actually much more stringent.

Faile - happens everyday! / Gender bias discussion..., by sin on Mar 9, 2016 22:58:59 GMT 1, You are a better man than me for dealing with this world womens day bullshit. It was official "its ok to be a nufeminist complaining breezebag day" and if that shit came into my office, you can bet I'd send that person to HR right away about causing a ruckus. Equality is about gender, race, etc not being part of the equation. My people work hard and spend a lot of time with us, and they deserve to have some space where they can have things that they enjoy and as long as it doesnt harm little kids, Its ok by us.
The Faile piece is fine. Particularly if you serve a roll that has limited to no client interaction. I wouldnt put it in my welcome area, or my conference room, but if its your office, hang that shit and enjoy it.
Fucking blubbering dipshits.

Faile - happens everyday! / Gender bias discussion..., by mojo on Mar 9, 2016 23:56:39 GMT 1, To me this picture IS a comment on female objectification in the work place. The monster is the out of date attitude that women are often only ever seen as high heeled bikini clad creatures......and it happens every day! It wouldn't bother me in the slightest but then I'm familiar with Faile's style and message. There is also the fact that no women can ever look as good as a drawing in a bikini and it puts them off dunking biscuits in their tea.

Faile - happens everyday! / Gender bias discussion..., by Poster Bob on Mar 10, 2016 0:41:59 GMT 1, I think I'm sick of American liberal culture which does nothing more than polarize groups of people. I can't believe that some of the best colleges in the world are nothing but factories for entitled, ultra-sensitive children dying to be marginalised. These asshats are the future?

I can't believe that some of the best colleges in the world are nothing but factories for entitled, ultra-sensitive children dying to be marginalised. These asshats are the future? Bringing the LOLs from the most polarizing poster that comes across as bitter at every opportunity.
But carry on.
The reality is this thread and forum is occupied by a very unique and small group of humans with one unifying interest(and likely many shared traits). It's a male dominated domain. It's a domain of white men. It's a domain of higher socioeconomic position or origin. It's ALSO a domain of philosophy, philanthropy, and culture...a desire to banter and explore grand ideas, symbolism, and the art we collect. To acknowledge other posters, their interpretation of the piece I am in agreement (amongst us in this space). Why though, should I expect anyone to even desire to explore the depth of the piece in a (semi) public space? They are uncomfortable. I like the idea of discussion about the art and ideas inherent and those derived, but we are talking about reactionary responses in this case that by definition don't sound like in their communication a place of desired understanding. The feeling of "unconscious gender bias" is a demand. The rhetorical question a weakly veiled threat that in addition to discussing this "oh so disturbing" image with other women, they took the time to learn what image it was (unless the email included a phone pic), but not the time to learn anything else. You think the offended are going to really think..."oh I like the meaning of it. Its OK."?
I expect a double down in the coming days (weeks) when you dont take it down.
Do I agree with this? no. Just my 2cents

Faile - happens everyday! / Gender bias discussion..., by d.r. perseus on Mar 10, 2016 8:04:59 GMT 1, Whoa, I think you'll find that if you say that in an American office you are using gender binary hate speech and soon out of a job due to violating someone's safe space. Any feminist who cannot see the power of this image, is not a feminist, I love it, plus little boys love dinosaurs and little girls love princesses, so you can start the equality conversations early with this on your wall. X Funny you want to talk gender roles and blah blah but you come across as a pitiful little women on the regular that I would bitch slap.

Faile - happens everyday! / Gender bias discussion..., by Deleted on Mar 10, 2016 12:21:33 GMT 1, The Faile print is what is termed as art and museums have lots and lots and lots of painting which depict naked women and also quite a few naked men too.
From the ancient world with art on pottery to today, art depicts people in all sorts of situations.
I don't see anything mysoginist or sexualising women at all in Failes art. It's just kitch based on old comics and movie posters and magazine ads of the past.
Whats dangerous today is so called "feminists" telling us that women should cover themselves and freedom of expression is bad.
Not all men look at a woman in a bikini or short skirt and think that she deserves to be raped.
