Palestinian Hip Hop, by monstris on Dec 17, 2007 3:38:26 GMT 1, Ran out of time to see any gigs but I'm well chuffed this film is coming out in the New Year:
www.slingshothiphop.com/
The scene started well before the 'Banksy effect' but I'm sure the influx of street art around Palestine and Israel hasn't hurt. And it makes a change from dem bredren wit da skillz brrrap brrrap or whatever nonsense passes for hiphop in some places these days.

Palestinian Hip Hop, by monstris on Dec 17, 2007 13:25:00 GMT 1, Got some really good fusions going on there. If we were a bit more organised, we could organise a party night perhaps featuring some of these guys.

I should be doing some work but I'm enjoying myself far too much. And who cares about deadlines when you can watch this great piece.

Palestinian Hip Hop, by fecam on Dec 17, 2007 15:28:26 GMT 1, Ha ha - yes - I do come over a bit like that. I actually collect [anorak style] hiphop records, and I'm afraid this does nothing for me. It's not that I can't understand a word, it's that the music that backs the lyrics is pretty primative (and not in a Ultramagetic MC's kind of good way).

Not a massive J Rawls fan - a little too lightweight for me (I have a few things that I think he did with J Sands).
The Kero One is alright. The produciton is quite nice, but his vocals are terrible - sounds like a real nerd!
Best new hip hop of the year by a MILE is Y Society - "Travel at your own pace" - check this one out to see how hip hop production should be done!

Palestinian Hip Hop, by fecam on Dec 18, 2007 15:24:34 GMT 1, Abdominal and DJ Format are great. Abdominal has been around for a few years now (he put out an EP with DJ Fase which is worth picking up).
Format has also put out a recent [vinyl only] EP which is a tribute to the Danny Krivit "Feelin' James" 12" (it's called Stealin' James) which cuts and pastes classic JB tracks. You can hear that via the Format myspace:
profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=39896267
Herbaliser are also a favourite - they have a 7" out at the moment though that it pretty weak IMO. Good live as well!
If you want to try the Y Society before you buy - pm me!

Good call, even though I'm on here lots, you just can't keep on top of it, so many new threads these days, and good threads just slip down into obscurity very quickly.
