Santas Ghetto : art discussion, by uksnowman on Dec 3, 2007 22:56:57 GMT 1, There seem a few long threads on SG, but not much discussion on the individual pieces (except banksy). Maybe we could say which are our favourites and why?
My two personal favourites are the Aiko and Kelsey Brookes. I'm not too sure about the meaning of both, anyone know the meaning behind 'Ganesh as rejection'? I love the colour on that one though.
The Aiko 'War and Child' stirs up a lot of emotion and to me relates the darkest feelings in Japan over the events at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These are contrasted with the image of children observing life growing in front of them.
I could be wrong but I remember reading that in japanese tradition, the rabbit is a symbol of longevity so that might be why the children are holding it.

Santas Ghetto : art discussion, by afroken on Dec 3, 2007 23:44:15 GMT 1, Well this is a popular discussion. More tumble weed here than on the whole of the West Bank.
I can't help thinking that, with it being Bethlehem and all that, some of the art might be a little offensive to some people. If I were a pilgrim, which I'm not, i might find the baby Christ that's been stoned to death a little difficult. I think I saw a Virgin Mary covered in blood by Banksy on Flickr too.
I know nothing about religious sensibilities though, so i may be wrong.

"Rat with Slingshot" or whatever it is called fav so far, due to symbolism with the Palestinian youths. This paired with an "I'm Worthless" or "Welcome to Hell" would be a dream combo for me.
The shot angel dropping the hearts also really good IMO.
Karim Dabbah "The Blood", blood spilled (for the cause, innoccent victim; who knows) I like as well.
Lots of other stuff I would be very, very happy with as well.

Agree, the rat with slingshot is top notch. Classic Mr B simplicity and meaning. The Kelsey original is sweet! Thanks to the guy who posted those pics. +1!

ooer! I really hope that is a typo, not live commentary. That would be more controversial than all the art.

Santas Ghetto : art discussion, by Bram on Dec 5, 2007 11:17:59 GMT 1, Am I right in thinking that the Kelsey Brookes print will not be the "Ganesh as Rejection" seeing that the canvas is on display at SG. I can't remember an original AND a print being available on the same release ??

I was looking forward to the Ganesh Rejection, but you're probably right. I do hope its not the same print he was selling through lab101 (poor by his standards).
