i do hope so
It would be good for everyone, surely?
Just out of curiosity, what would you do if they did make a print out of a piece of art you commissioned and had not received your permission and you found out it was illegal/immoral/rude/ignorant/greedy to do so?

Commission , by Deleted on May 16, 2016 20:52:04 GMT 1, The artist owns the copyright but if the idea is yours and you know how you want the artist to make the art look.
You can probably get the artist to let you have the copyright as good will as long as the artists name is always on the art.
I see a lot of adverts on Craiglist etc where clothes companies tout for people to submt T shirt designs offering low dollar prizes and a lot of artists struggle to make a living.

If you wanted a new image commissioned by an artist you could negotiate having the image exclusively, especially if you have asked for something particular or unique. I am sure it would raise the cost of having the piece made however I am sure most artists, including myself, are happy to talk about what's possible. Just ask!

Commission , by bigv on May 17, 2016 0:40:45 GMT 1, Not to hijack this thread, but since it seems a resolution has been found I figured why not.
When it comes to commissions, what kind of prices are we talking. I mean, I know it obviously depends on the artist, but are we talking something far above their normal original pricing? As a for instance, say I wanted an original Borf (John Tsombikos) in the style of his Rothko's Modern Life series but in some specific colors. Would we be talking about $2700or so that I can buy one brand new for (I forget the site) since it's not necessarily new and ground breaking or a departure from their current work. Or would we be talking 20%,30%,50% more because it's a request.
Since I've never really commissioned anything before and I don't want to be an ignorant dumbass whenever I do, I figured it would be a good idea to have some sort of expectation in my back pocket.

If you're doing it direct with the artist, you'll sometimes get a deal on gallery prices, but sometimes not. If it's being facilitated by someone, it all depends on the cut they're taking. Most artists have a set per square foot pricing scheme in my experience.
