Stokes Croft - Magpie Squat Eviction + Crowdfunder, by nattylee on Jul 9, 2016 22:33:50 GMT 1,
This is a call out for support at the Magpie Squat in Stokes Croft Bristol, our building recently sold at auction for ยฃ300,000 an the new owner wants us out an eviction could be any day now.
So we have started a crowdfunder to raise enough to open a legitimate alternative art centre in Bristol, continuing to support street art and squatting in the city and as a hub for local community groups/ art collectives.
Please take the time to read the page and share if you can. www.crowdfunder.co.uk/magpie-new-era-1
Thanks
Natty Lee

Stokes Croft - Magpie Squat Eviction + Crowdfunder, by Deleted on Jul 13, 2016 19:36:49 GMT 1, What is the 20K for?
According to this article 200K was raised to buy the property and it went for 300K.
"An attempt by locals to crowdfund enough to buy the Magpie and develop it for the community raised more than ยฃ200,000 in four days; however the group was outbid at auction, and the building was sold for ยฃ300,000." thebristolcable.org/2016/04/another-blow-to-the-counter-culture-of-stokes-croft/

Stokes Croft - Magpie Squat Eviction + Crowdfunder, by stillborncrisps on Jul 14, 2016 10:48:18 GMT 1, Man that's sad news. To raise ยฃ200k to buy it is amazing, but there's always someone with more money. Goodbye Stokes Croft.
I'm sure it would've been looked into, but couldn't the building have got a 'community asset' order put on it from the council, which would prevent it being sold for redevelopment?

Stokes Croft - Magpie Squat Eviction + Crowdfunder, by nattylee on Sept 21, 2016 21:12:39 GMT 1, Yeah we looked into making it an asset of community value which needed to be nominated by a local charity or community organisation, unfortunately it didn't get sorted in time for various reasons. It doesn't prevent redevelopment, but usually delays any sale to the property for 6 months, giving local people enough time to raise enough money to buy it.
There is a new space coming soon which is now being developed you can see plan here: magpieartsocial.wordpress.com/ supported by Stik stik.org/fundraising/ whos helping massively to get the project off the ground with the donation of his piece he painted here in 2009
