Its a LOVE HATE relationship with money - social commentary, by Sanscript on Jul 21, 2016 13:11:00 GMT 1, Its a LOVE HATE relationship with money.
It is isn't it. Our relationship with money.
Money has been up and down for me over the last couple of years. I had to downsize my artist workshop recently, due to money. I am now in a smaller space and can no longer paint and deal with larger pieces. Which I guess is good. Maybe its a forced evolution?
I recently explored the use of money in art, or how money can be used to influence art, how the symbolism of money can be used to provide social commentary in art. I painted. I painted on money and used paper money to make paintings.
I have a couple of larger framed pieces that I created that I can no longer store or wait to be sold, therefore I am offering them up here at reduced prices. In all honesty, I need the space and I need the money.
For sale I have a pair of artworks, that utilise the Robert Indiana LOVE text. In these pieces I have used actual dollar bills to create the text LOVE and HATE. The text has a raised relief has been pasted to thick plywood which has been painted black. The plywood pieces measure approximate A2 in size and have been framed by a black deep edge wood frame without glass. These are an edition of 6, and this pair are both 6 of 6 each.
I have had these in my workshop for the last year or so, and they have also moved workshop recently, so they do have some tiny marks etc. Even though these are new and created by myself, I suppose I am selling them as second hand (not that there is anything wrong with them), but they are also not freshly produced.
PM me if you are interested. I would rather sell them as a pair. I'm looking for £140 for the pair which includes postage to the UK Mainland, bearing in mind that these are quite sizeable.

Its a LOVE HATE relationship with money - social commentary, by Sanscript on Jul 21, 2016 13:20:17 GMT 1, Is anybody else freaked out by money – I mean, it’s good when you have it, but does it play on your mind? Of course it does, but it goes deeper than worrying about paying the bills, it transcends the physical reality of paying bills and becomes an emotional obsession, it’s a metaphysical state, and it’s esoteric as only a few of us really understand it.
I had a moment a few years back when I realised, what the feck is money, and why does it do what it does. It’s not real, not really. We think it’s real, but it’s just the assigning of a number to a piece of paper, and of course numbers are not of substance and paper is just paper. So it’s not real, not really.
It’s amazing how money rules our lives, it literally dominates every moment. It controls us, our actions, our emotions..........it’s just unbelievably powerful, for something that is not real. The metaphysical state of money is what might keep you awake at night, worrying about money. It’s quite dark when you think about it, the control it has, the obsession it creates.
So I set about researching money, started reading about the old money families, and banks and the banking system, and I found this web site.
www.xat.org/xat/moneyhistory.html
It’s a good read. Its’ a long read, but I felt it was worth the journey.
It’s an addiction – we get addicted at an early age. You know; pocket money. It’s where it begins. You get a taste of that high and you want more, and your parents are the dealers. You become addicted to £1 pound coins, or dollars, or euro’s, like they are feel good pills that you can’t get enough of.
Then you get your first job, but you only seek your first job because you are addicted, you are chasing that high, that high from the pocket money days. It’s like pocket money is the gateway drug to getting a job and working for more money, and obsessing over money, as you get higher and higher.
I realised that I fecking hate money – and then realised that I love it, but I’m not sure I actually love it, it’s a false love, like I love it because I have to........it’s more like a placebo.........it’s not money that you love, it’s the freedom it brings, which is the high that we are after.

Its a LOVE HATE relationship with money - social commentary, by Sanscript on Jul 21, 2016 18:06:22 GMT 1, I have had peeps ask how much these are.
The price is in the text, but I admit I write a lot of faff, so I guess its hard to see.
Basically, I was hoping for £140 for the pair, which includes the frames and postage to the UK Mainland.
I think I paid about £80 for the frames alone, and postage would probably cost £20 or more. These are both A2 in size, on thick plywood, so they are heavy.
I have just moved workshop and my new place is a lot smaller than my old place and I just dont have room for framed pieces or canvas artworks anymore, so I am having a sell-off and a clear out.
To be honest, I would be open to offers.
Cheers,

Its a LOVE HATE relationship with money - social commentary, by Sanscript on Jul 22, 2016 10:19:49 GMT 1, Thanks for the interest so far. The questions that have been raised have made me realise that I had not considered how I would be paid for these, and also made me realise that the detail has been lost in the text.
These are slightly bumped and scraped, as they have been in my workshop for more than a year. I have reduced the price a little to £120 for the pair to reflect this.
I will be having a huge clearout of stuff this weekend to try and fit into my new artist workshop, and will be having a big sell off.
I have created a bigcartel account so that any interested parties can purchase these.
Thanks for looking.

Everything has to go. I'm in a dire situation. No space for it all anymore. It would be good to get framing and materials/painting costs back, and postage and packing covered, but I'm not looking to make any money on any artworks I'm currently selling. I need to make space.
The above item is a one off, but its under my feet. Not literally of course

Its a LOVE HATE relationship with money - social commentary, by Sanscript on Jul 23, 2016 11:52:35 GMT 1, I experimented further with the LOVE HATE money thing and painted the words on dollar notes. I had a couple of the notes framed. The framed piece was just an experiment, but it shows that simplicity is often best. I feel that seeing those words on the money is quite powerful. I am selling this piece now. Again I am making space. The dollar notes are set back in the frame, using a black spacer, with a float mount around each window. It measure 27cm by 27cm by 3.5cm. £30 including postage to the UK Mainland. SOLD.
Thank you.
