Icons, by Icesay on Sept 18, 2016 18:17:53 GMT 1, Just thinking about icons. We see lots of American icons in urban art regurgitated time and time again. I wonder who are the icons in our midst? The icons of tomorrow so to speak or has the possibility of icons now been lost with the Internet generation?

Icons, by Hairbland on Sept 22, 2016 14:59:31 GMT 1, Icon in our midst? Bill Murray.
Hard to say whether Kim Kardashian becomes an icon, or if she is just a modern day Zsa Zsa Gabor.
Will Kanye face the 20 Year Test, the wave of nostalgia sprinkled with icons? I'm not sure, other than his music the rest seems to be largely emperor's clothes (imo).
Article in today's Times re Naomi Campbell's 20 year career, or as they say "Naomi Campbell's Two-Decade Wild Ride Isn't Slowing Down". Kate embraced, Naomi not so much as to icon.
Interesting.

I'm not sure, other than his music the rest seems to be largely emperor's clothes (imo). Worth noting that Kanye is already 20 years in... and over a decade as maybe the most famous hip hop musician still performing. I saw him in concert 14 years ago (while he was touring with an opening act for another rapper), and he's always been... well, the same. Not everyone's cup of tea, but he has shaped hip hop culture, which is a large influence these days of American pop culture (which is again an influence in part of global culture), longer than anyone else still actively creating and performing.
Not his best work, but it is from 20 years ago (Kanye and Common, Chicago, 1996)

It's the period 20 years after relevance, usually.
I'm not sure about Kanye, whether he is (still) the real deal or at this point a bloated act.

Icons, by Coach on Sept 23, 2016 18:21:21 GMT 1, I don't think I would recognise a picture of Mr K West if I saw one. I have not knowingly heard any of his tunes. I've heard of Kim Kardasian but have no clue what she does. Not icons for me. Mine would be Bob Dylan, John Peel, Morrisey, Strummer, Weller and Jim Morrison in the music world. True icons, every one. Icons in the art and literary worlds are too many to mention.

Very good series for anyone who hasn't seen it...

Not that they aren't icons to others or people who have made enormous contributions to the arts scene (I'm guessing, as I'm not familiar enough with their CVs to cite)

Yes, I've heard of Paul and the Beatles. Like their work, but prefer the Stones and the Doors. I'm afraid I don't particularly like his work since the Beatles. Regarding your other reply, Paul Weller was the singer songwriter with the Jam, and Joe Strummer with the Clash. John Peel was a radio DJ who championed music the mainstream radio programs wouldn't play, including punk and indie. For my generation, in the UK, and of those that veered towards the alternative scene, all were and remain icons. K West is not in the same league in my eyes, but that's probably because we have very different tastes, just as you had not heard of some of the names I mentioned.

The Smiths. Pure synergy and talent, speaking for a generation at the time. The chemistry between Marr's music creation and Morriseys interpretation was and is still mostly unsurpassed. At a time with heavy Rock and Roll they were anti this and this style of anti rock in the UK has stood the time.
Too many good songs but "a boy with a thorn in his side" has to be one of the best!

I was lucky enough to be born at exactly the right time. Their first LP came out whilst I was still a teenager, and their music spoke to me. I have loved them ever since. I'm happy to say that both my kids adore them too, and my eldest went to see a Smiths tribute band last night! As he knows every song backwards, I'm sure he had a wonderful time. It doesn't get better than this

Icons, by Daniel Silk on Sept 24, 2016 23:54:06 GMT 1, A lot of very old names being talked about so far, and that's something that always surprises me is how many generations get stuck in a few decades and don't keep up to date or move forwards to new styles of Music and Art.
I think the original question was about future Art icons?

Icons, by Hairbland on Sept 25, 2016 1:18:39 GMT 1, I don't think I would recognise a picture of Mr K West if I saw one. I'd say no re The Smiths, yes re Morrissey. Marr was an extraordinary guitar player, but the band seemed to be his moment, whereas Morrissey continued to grow as someone to follow, to cherish...to treat as an icon.
The Smiths a great band, saw them 3 times. But not icons.

Icons, by Hairbland on Sept 25, 2016 1:24:35 GMT 1, A lot of very old names being talked about so far, and that's something that always surprises me is how many generations get stuck in a few decades and don't keep up to date or move forwards to new styles of Music and Art. I think the original question was about future Art icons? I was going to mention this but you beat me to it - if the peeps are already dead then history has already judged whether they are icons or are in the process of becoming icons.
And what makes an icon? Do they need to be a bit left of center? Live fast die young? Female versus male?

But can you call Graham an icon if no one knows what he looks like? Pop some big glasses on a potato and everyone'll know who that is.
