House insurance or insure separately? , by daveyuk on Sept 19, 2016 11:38:24 GMT 1, Hi there,
Sorry for what must sound like the most boring title for a post but I've come up against a problem in that a piece of art I now have makes in really difficult to add to my regular household insurance. hardly any insurance company wants to add any single item over ยฃ10k. My question is - can anyone recommend a UK insurance company that will insure items way over 10k ...or is there an insurance company I can go to and insurance my art completely separately, away from my regular household insurance.
Any advice very gratefully received!
Best from the west,
D

House insurance or insure separately? , by trowel on Sept 19, 2016 13:56:43 GMT 1, Hiscox cover any single item valued at up to ยฃ15k without need to itemise. Not cheap, but has been useful to know everything is covered without having to continuously track and report the rising value of certain pieces.
The problems start once anything gets past ยฃ15k, at which point you may need to consider that putting items in storage is the way to go for both value for money and for peace of mind.
Still, nicer problems to have, as the lottery advert says...

House insurance or insure separately? , by njr911 on Sept 19, 2016 14:00:14 GMT 1, I use Brownhills - what I don't know is how it would affect your regular home insurance policy as while you are insuring art with another company, a high value collection would increase the risk on the regular insurance.

House insurance or insure separately? , by trowel on Sept 20, 2016 20:05:17 GMT 1, I'd like more details about secure storage if anyone has any ? I got some quotes earlier in the year from a few places including Momart, which all generally came in at around ยฃ50 per week for spaces of 6m3 - they are geared up to storage of objects, and I couldn't find anywhere that could quote for print storage. Open to suggestions myself.

It is ยฃ40 for the year for them to insure ยฃ1000 of my stuff but I could have used my own insurance if I wanted to.
Might be worthwhile asking your local storage units for a quote and also any online insurers as I would think that you might get a cheaper quote with your art being in a manned secured building with coded entry and cameras.

Self-storage was something I looked at (my area is a hot-spot for some weird reason), but they specifically exclude high value items from the list of things that can be stored. e.g. Big Yellow: "any item of high value requiring specialist storage (including without limitation jewellery, money, bullion, deeds, bonds, securities, stamps, antiques, fine art or fine wines;"

House insurance or insure separately? , by avec art on Sept 21, 2016 8:39:32 GMT 1, Prints have the additional requirement of needing a temperature and humidity controlled environment. So I'd say a specialist service would be necessary.

House insurance or insure separately? , by Deleted on Sept 21, 2016 9:18:36 GMT 1, I insure home and contents with Directline Select and it covers all artwork from point of purchase so as a bonus I don't have to shell out for insurance when shipping. I have to name items over ยฃ10k but I can have as many as a like unnamed below that value.
I also just put my own replacement value against prints, they don't ask for independent valuations, the higher I value them, the higher my premium.
