Selling advice, by jiggamanjc on Oct 20, 2016 10:16:37 GMT 1, Hi all
Looking to get some advice on the best way to sell to an overseas buyer.
We have corresponded by email but neither of us can offer any references to each other as neither of us have bought our sold over the forum before.
I understand that PayPal can help with an insured sale/purchase arrangement - how does this work?
Any advice you can give would be great as I have never done this before and don't want to get burnt.
Thanks

Thanks Where is it being sent to? I would use an intermediary gallery to facilitate the sale. There could be a few on here who could possibly help you if you asked nicely enough.
You send the work to a gallery local to the buyer. The buyer releases the funds via wire transfer and the gallery releases the artwork to the buyer when you confirm the money is in your account.
That's the safest way IMO.

Unfortunately the buyer is oversees. I have already said that I will only release the print one I have cleared funds. But if I was in their position I wouldnt be happy with this either.

That's a good shout thanks. They have said that they have bought from a Los Angeles gallery before so perhaps I could use them to facilitate.

Selling advice, by agu on Oct 20, 2016 10:45:51 GMT 1, How long has the buyer been a member? I have had successful trades around the ยฃ3k mark from both the US and across Europe. It all comes down to reducing the risk to an acceptable level for the scale of the transaction.
Things I use: Get a scan of a passport & utility bill Cross reference to an active facebook page and linked in account. A search vs the person do they show up, what judgements can you make.
I had one chap who sent me a link to his picture on the company website...given it was a sizeable reputable firm I was happy to deal.

Selling advice, by corinthia on Oct 20, 2016 10:46:02 GMT 1, My first and only purchase on the forum thus far I bought a print and the member sent it to me without payment for me to inspect first. They are in the U.K. and I am states. It wasn't something I insisted on and expected the seller to do. I don't recommend you do this. But at the end of the day it comes down to trust. The member went out of his way to make the sale easy for me and we trusted each other.

Thanks this is great advice.
I have emailed the gallery in LA to see if they can help facilitate.

Believe me I understand. It worked out fine for both of us. My point was you have to have some level of trust.

Yeah, that's what I'm struggling with. I need to make sure I am 100% confident with the sale releasing the piece.

Selling advice, by corinthia on Oct 20, 2016 11:29:41 GMT 1, It can be tough. Obviously the buyer has concerns as we'll in most purchases. I have had many where a "perfect" print turns out not to be perfect. If something doesn't feel right don't sell it to them. Someone else will come along.

A couple of transatlantic transactions and a couple in the UK, all trouble free. Im either a buyers dream as a seller or a sap !!!!

Selling advice, by Deleted on Oct 21, 2016 11:00:12 GMT 1, I think at the end of the day it comes down to trust. There are plenty of fine upstanding members on here that I've done deals with regardless of lack of references or how long they've been members, but I've also heard stories of deals going sour so in that sense I understand the OP's reluctance. Admittedly the first few overseas deals were not for lots of money.
I've only had one issue with an overseas seller which is ongoing but it's amicable at the present time.
I've been sent artwork by overseas sellers before I've paid them and worked out payment plans too. I've also been sent money to buy artwork on behalf of overseas buyers none of which protected them if I decided to do a runner. Trades also where no money has been exchanged but your sending off artworks in the hope the other party has also sent their works to you.
I hope you and the seller find a solution
