Introduction to Feminist Art by Helena Reckitt
2 Nov 2016 7:00pm - 9:00pm Rochelle School Arnold Circus E2 7ES London โIntroductions โฆโ is a new series of talks and events curated by frieze associate editor Paul Clinton, inviting international experts to provide accessible, jargon-free primers to key works, ideas and movements in contemporary art and culture.
As the Whitechapel Gallery opens a major retrospective of feminist activist artists the Guerrilla Girls, we invite Helena Reckitt (author of Art and Feminism, Phaidon) to provide a guide to feminism in contemporary art. This evening event will be an accessible introduction to the key ideas and artists that have shaped feminism in contemporary art, from historical precursors such as Sonia Delaunay, to figures like Mary Kelly working in the 1960s heyday of the womenโs movement, through to Marina Abramovic and Cindy Sherman, as well as emerging artists including Martine Syms. Through clear, visual examples, the session will cover themes including commodification, consciousness raising, gender masquerade and feminist conceptual art.
