$1700 - What would you do?, by Layaway Days Art Blog on Nov 13, 2016 17:29:01 GMT 1, Hi All,
Happy Sunday! I just started a new job and have a bit of $$ to either rollover into a 401k or diversify and pick up a piece as an investment. We all come from different backgrounds and I must say $1700 is a lot of money for myself. Art is my secondary hobby, and I have about 20 prints/originals. Nothing crazy by any means. I have prints from Harrington, Geddes, Nagel, Levinson, Mashburn, Roukes, Baker, Keyes, & Barras. I have originals from Kit King, Alpay Efe, Adam Hunter Caldwell, & James Bullough. I did see a gentleman on the forum pick up a Picasso etching for $5k, which got me thinking about getting a piece as an investment.
I have been reviewing estimates for recent auctions and it seems that estimates for some signed, entry-level Dali, Picasso, Harings are around $1500-3000. Obviously like everyone, I like these artists but will never be able to afford anything by them. So here are my list of artists that I like. Any suggestions? (Keep in mind that I would like to keep this for 30-40 years or so. And just because something may increase in value, doesn't necessarily mean that I want to sell.
Artists I like but will never be able to afford:
-Banksy -Lichtenstein -Warhol -Ruscha -Rasuchenberg -Basquiat -Harland Miller
Other artists that I like:
-Drew Miller -Herakut -Nick Walker -Conor Harrington -Jeremy Geddes -Lucas Price (Mort series) -Joram Roukes -Jeremy Mann -Greg Gandy -Ceasar Santos -Marco Battagliani

$1700 - What would you do?, by dotdot on Nov 13, 2016 17:50:41 GMT 1, picasso ! small print from the early 60's ? there's a few places in london who would be able to opine.
depends on what type of work you might be in search of. type ? agit / socio / fashion / zeit / typo / topo / rubbishoh / or and this might ring bell here bandwagonoh..!
good luck btw... not an easy exercise - but count yourself lucky your money will stretch to more if you buy something from the uk.. by some 15% or so.. than it did before the 'well let's not go there eh?'

$1700 - What would you do?, by nixon451 on Nov 13, 2016 17:58:37 GMT 1, Are you asking about rolling over cash into an 401k or Divesting a 401k? If it is not a Roth 401k you will have to pay full boat tax on that money, plus an extra 10% tax penalty assuming you are not 59 1/2 years old.

You can have Pejac, a Great artist , or Pins ( clocleorth Brittain ) my dream .. or some Invader ( Ziggy ) ( I don't Like Faile, Kaws, etc etc ) Take care

$1700 - What would you do?, by Hairbland on Nov 13, 2016 23:39:33 GMT 1, If you are on the younger side (under 30) I'd suggest investing that money in a high risk high growth opportunity, mutual fund or whatever turns you on. Maybe do some research as I think most firms that handle your money would require at least $5,000 to start.
Then I'd suggest culling your collection with the idea of keeping musts while raising some funds for new directions.
Catching the right artist at the right time probably requires the same research and work that picking a proper stock fund does.
Quick answer, I imagine if you had been able to buy 3 of the Mr. D.O.B. sets with your $1,700, as an example, you'd be doing ok.
Jim Dine's work is quite good, and affordable.
