Should I be afraid to buy a Banksy?, by james10 on Dec 5, 2016 12:12:13 GMT 1, Hi everybody, lets make clear that this is just a rethorical question, as i (unfortunately) cannot afford to buy any of his works.
Lets say one day i'll sell all my prints, add some extra money and buy one or two Banksy. Is it going to be a smart choice?
Apart from the "buy only art that you like and you cant be wrong" mantra, we are not talking about a 300 pounds print here; when you are buying a Banksy you are not just buying art but also making an investment (and an expensive one).
Now, let's not take into account the whole conspiracy theory of him being a product pushed into the market by a few gallerists, and let's not question this aspect.
Banksy being "Banksy" it is a variable that should be put into account. What if one day he might go completely bananas and start releasing prints like there is no tomorrow with the only purpose to screw the international art market up?
so, should i be afraid to buy a Banksy?

Should I be afraid to buy a Banksy?, by Happy Shopper on Dec 5, 2016 12:22:20 GMT 1, Impossible to tell... But I doubt that would happen (based on the way his prints and originals are sold now by POW/Pest Control). If you're so worried, buy a cheaper end Warhol print, or something like that, at a reputable auction.

Should I be afraid to buy a Banksy?, by Viking Surfer on Dec 5, 2016 12:28:04 GMT 1, Banksy for me defines 'Urban Art'. Did he start it? No. Is he the most expensive street artist of all time? Not yet.
But when they write the history books, he will be the defining / most famous artist of the movement in my opinion.
Just look at Warhol and 'Pop art' (an art movement started in the UK I might add).
So for me, even if his identity / team were revealed, nobody would actually give a f'u'ck. Banksy goes beyond minor collections now, like it or not, he's the blue chip stock of the art world.
I'm just glad that I really f'u'cking love his artwork and I will forever enjoy having it on my wall.

Should I be afraid to buy a Banksy?, by Deleted on Dec 5, 2016 12:41:34 GMT 1, I disagree about Bany being the most defining. The most hyped definately with help from Hirst.
The most defining would be Blek. Plus Robbo is far more of a street urban artist who made a mark in the UK than banksy with his promoted cartoons and business plan. Plus Labour party manifesto art which is not always accurate as in Steve Jobs dad was a Syrian migrant. No he wasn't, he was a very wealthy arab who came and went to the US stayed in hotels etc at will.
The whole Banky Robin Hood anonymous guy is getting boring nowadays. That gimmick has sailed.
As for buying for investment.
I'm sure Bankksy prices will remain high and depending on the next antic which generates publicity prices could go higher but far from as seminal as Warhol.
Regarding investment.
Comic art originals and paintings are going very well these days.
Just look at Frank Frazetta and how high prices for his paintings have gone and how affordable some of his original drawings are now.
Also Moebius where one can still find ltd editions available.
The choice is in the kudos and the size of ones kitchen.
Big kitchen, Banky on the wall shows people it's high tech and not by Ikea. Small kitchen, Banky on wall Kanye won't come to dinner.

If I were Banksy (and again the "real one" far away from every BS conspiracy theory), at some point i might enjoy doing something like i said before. And that will become my masterpiece!
Imagine that up to now i just made art criticizing the art market itself and saying that "morons are buying my s**t" for thousands of euros. What about taking it to the next step: moving from denouncing it with my stencils to doing something that would actually screw up a system? do something that could actually bring all this thing down?
I'm talking about the last scene of fight club here - of course i'm not saying he will blow up skyscrapers with dynamite.. but figuratively he could do that making the whole market crash.
Why would I do that?
I dont know. maybe because i'm Banksy, and doing that is just part of my whole project. I will not be completely surprise if he'll does anything like this. In the end, it is what he says in some of his art already.

Should I be afraid to buy a Banksy?, by chads007 on Dec 5, 2016 13:00:41 GMT 1, Part of the notoriety comes from the mystique of him/them. It is an unknown quantity if/when the identity comes to the fore, in terms of value on artwork (drop rather than rise), but in the meantime, I think you're 'safe' if looking to 'invest' blue chip. But, eggs and baskets and all that.

Should I be afraid to buy a Banksy?, by Dr Plip on Dec 5, 2016 13:33:39 GMT 1, I wouldn't worry about Banksy deliberately crashing his own market. Instead, worry about rising sea temperatures, manmade pollution, global corruption, wage inequality, a world population that's breeding out of control, mass extinction events, the fact that you can't eat a Banksy artwork, and driverless cars.
Buy what you like and invest only what you can afford to lose.
But I don't think Banksy will go out of his way to piss off his fans/collectors. And even if he did, his real admirers would still buy that Banksy off you.
So you'll be fine.
He's not going to do a Rolf.

Oh what if Banksy is this beautiful fuck-up muse, that thinks outside the box and gives away it all by just simply being and living it. Could be, it's not like it would be the first time in art history. Perhaps he's an ordinary guy with an ordinary Lloyds bank account?
Perhaps that's why he hasn't exposed himself? He doesn't want to be a disappointment to his many fans around the world.
Perhaps he's still trying to scrape together enough funds to pay a printer to make his next print?
We've all made bad business decisions.
Being an artist is bloody hard.
You're poor most of the time. And the rest of the time, you're covered in paint and crying.

Should I be afraid to buy a Banksy?, by Dr Plip on Dec 5, 2016 13:41:01 GMT 1, Have you ever heard of an artist called Rolf Harris?
Well he's the bogeyman that pops up in the minds of people that consider purchasing art prints these days.
Which is ridiculous, because it's statistically rare to come across an artist that does anything illegal or unsavoury.

Should I be afraid to buy a Banksy?, by pokodogo on Dec 5, 2016 13:51:07 GMT 1, To the OP
Buy yourself a low end unsigned Banksy....
My thoughts and your not going to do to much damage if the walls come tumbling down, all the signed editions will be in private collections within the next 10 years not to see the light of day, which in turn will push up the price of unsigned editions as they will still be available in possibly limited amounts (more unsigned released and around than signed).

Should I be afraid to buy a Banksy?, by sl on Dec 5, 2016 14:03:29 GMT 1, To think that Banksy is poor is highly unlikely. In the beggining of his career prob yes but now def not. All he has to do is produce and original and sell it. Easy money. Or like Kaws sell 18k prints. Poor no way To think he did not keep some of a his own prints and originals would be ludicrous. I do think he has no passion for money only producing though provoking art. That's why his prints and posters are priced so inexpensively. I also hope there is no BIG REVEAL As for investment who knows. IMO buy what you like. if it goes up cool if not no big deal. If you can't afford to lose it don't gamble๐

Buy originals from other artists you love, i'm sure there is plenty. That will make you far prouder than this embarassing moment where your friends ask you "nice.. and how much did you pay for this print ?"

Should I be afraid to buy a Banksy?, by erik on Dec 5, 2016 15:21:15 GMT 1, The answer to the OP's question is an easy one I think. Yes, be afraid to exchange cash for a piece of paper that may or may not hold it's monetary value. There is risk involved. On the other hand, if you want a Banksy on the wall, don't let that stop you.

Should I be afraid to buy a Banksy?, by sgolby on Dec 5, 2016 16:55:24 GMT 1, Buy the art if you like it, chances are that with Banksy it will hold it's value and you will not lose big on the money spent. I think it is better to buy art you love on the primary market. The reality is that no one who bought banksy originally did it to make money, they did it because they liked his work. Chances are that in your collecting you will find one or two artists who appreciate in value. The fact is the true value of the art will be the happiness it brings you not the money you make, that is secondary. IF you are trying to make mney there are faster easier ways to do it.

Should I be afraid to buy a Banksy?, by Black Apple Art on Dec 5, 2016 18:09:51 GMT 1, Hi everybody, lets make clear that this is just a rethorical question, as i (unfortunately) cannot afford to buy any of his works. Nope. Hands down best investment you can make in art and most other categories when taking into account factors like demand/supply, liquidity and appreciation. Then throw in his phenomenal history, deep meaning and an exciting future as a bonus.

Should I be afraid to buy a Banksy?, by Deleted on Dec 5, 2016 18:34:26 GMT 1, Arguably Banksy is one of the most well known living artists in the world. If you ask someone just to name 5 living artists likely his name will likely come up. Especially if you ask someone who does not collect art. Like it or not Banksy has an established legacy already, global recognition, and happens to be extremely talented.
If you are asking for evidence that Banksy works are a decent investment ask why Laz would be buying up works at auction and opening up a new shop dedicated to secondary market Banksy works. It is not at all a crazy question to ask as anyone buying at these prices should want to at a minimum retain the value of the work.
