Condition Reports of Banksy Prints, by lacklisted on Jan 29, 2017 11:55:05 GMT 1, Hi all,
I went into a gallery in North London yesterday to look at and enquire on current stock of Banksy prints.
I asked the sales person if they had 'condition reports' of the prints I took an interest in (which were all framed and some were listed as 'sold Framed'). I was told no, so I asked if a condition report could be carried out by an independent expert at my expense. I was told no and that the gallery or their framer would be the only ppl to carry out a condition report.
Is this normal practice for a gallery regarding condition reports?

Condition Reports of Banksy Prints, by Poster Bob on Jan 29, 2017 12:52:51 GMT 1, Sounds like normal for Hang-Up. It may have been framed by the best in the business but that doesn't mean that the print wasn't already mauled before it was framed or reframed.

Condition Reports of Banksy Prints, by disturbart on Jan 29, 2017 13:47:57 GMT 1, I'd avoid hang up with a barge pole . Lots of prints I've looked at have been described as mint on email and then are pretty poor in the flesh. On top of that they are asking for a premium to buy from them?

Condition Reports of Banksy Prints, by lacklisted on Jan 29, 2017 14:17:06 GMT 1, Sounds like normal for Hang-Up. It may have been framed by the best in the business but that doesn't mean that the print wasn't already mauled before it was framed or reframed. I've seen some prints that on my close inspection 'look fine', then I've seen a condition report for the same print that points out repair/s... so even if the print 'looks' ok the the real value would potentially be impacted.
Considering the current prices gallery's are asking I'd only consider buying from them if either they have a condition report or are willing to have a report carried out, and absolutely never buy a framed print without being able to inspect it out of its frame.
As if it isn't hard enough trying to locate a decent print, some gallery's really need to up their standards and provide a better service.
Does anyone know of a UK gallery where my dilemma isn't going to be an issue ?

Condition Reports of Banksy Prints, by samfrost on Jan 29, 2017 15:16:19 GMT 1, Either the gallery was trying to shush you out the door or they weren't being transparent. Proceed cautiously. There are plenty of other avenues for Banksy prints.

Condition Reports of Banksy Prints, by lacklisted on Jan 29, 2017 15:45:18 GMT 1, I'm prepared and I'm sure others are willing to pay a premium for a condition report, especially when many pieces are now exceeding 20k.... as a buyer and (none expert) the risk of not having this in too great a risk.
Gallery's need to ensure quality and raise their standards, any that do will get my business.
I've just had a quick search of gallery associations/ society's, which there are many and none of them lay out the standards expected for their members.... welcome to the art world I guess!

Condition Reports of Banksy Prints, by Deleted on Jan 29, 2017 16:48:00 GMT 1, lacklisted i hear and understand your dilemma...what exactly is it you would be looking us Galleries to do? in order to 'up our game' ? we always advise that our prints are totally mint and if not disclose any issue whatsoever...our prints are always open for inspection and 90% of them are sold unframed...and always inspected out of the frame prior to purchase.. Also a full refund is guaranteed with any purchase if not satisfied...so please elaborate? thanks CAT

I have rarely found a gallery that would not disclose condition, and if I was asked to pay to know what condition the print is in, I would laugh and turn around.
Auction houses issue condition reports, but even those aren't binding. So in the end the best thing is to know your options if for some reason you are not satisfied with your purchase.
If you are unable to go see the print, ask for pictures. If it is in a frame ask for photos out of the frame.
If you don't get satisfactory details and pics, walk away.

Condition Reports of Banksy Prints, by lacklisted on Jan 29, 2017 18:12:54 GMT 1, Hi CAT,
As initially asked, I was concerned that my visit to a north London Gallery was less than impressive.
When I asked the sales person about having condition report, their response was no, and that they do not entertain independent inspections. So I asked the forum if this is general practice.
After looking into (although briefly) generic art gallery codes of conduct as per their associations and societys, I see there are no policies placed on independent condition reports for buyers.
Some gallery's are obviously better than others as mentioned in the thread i.e Castle Gallery. I was hoping that there would be a 'list' of standards or policies that reputable galleries would adhere too which would allay my concerns and address independent condition reports.
Maybe it would be a good thing to have general standards and best practices applied across the industry for clarity and to weed out the lacklustre from the exemplary and to independently verify art work condition or even condition reporting to a set of industry standards.
